Interesting story behind the finding of this small chapel. It only takes a few minutes to view, and yes it costs a few euros for entry, but it is worth it to help preserve this piece of history.

Nice to see the small church. However the price is 2.5euro per person and 1.5 if you are in a group of 10. We were with 8 and were not allowed to buy 10 tickets and give the remaining 2 to the following tourists. (8->20€ 10->15€).

San Nicolò Inferiore is said to be the oldest surviving church in Modica. Hidden behind a small entrance in the city center, you'll find a cave church carved into the rock around the 11th–12th centuries. It's a very small church, but inside you can still see Byzantine-style frescoes on the walls.

After visiting Pantalica near Syracuse this is a perfect continuation of our explorations in Sicily's rich history.

Definitely visit whilst in Modica. I stumbled across this today by chance and was curious and was not disappointed - very small but unique and intimate glimpse into the past, and a fascinating story of how it was buried and forgotten for so long. Sure, it’s not going to slap you in the face with the ornate grandeur of the duomi in Modica, but let’s face if, you can see a stunning Baroque church in so many European places - this is unique. Take a moment, use your imagination (like you often have to do with history, preservation is a precarious thing) and enjoy what is different about and so old about this and it will amaze you, this dates back to the Greek’s in Sicily pre Christ. Ernesto on the front desk was amazing and obviously passionate about what he does. I also read some reviews about the cost, I think 2.50 euro is a bargain (even with the dreadful Australian exchange rate 😂) to see this little unique slice of history and happy for my small entrance fee to go to the preservation. The cost of an arancini to help preserve something special, I’m here for that 🙌

What you see is what you get here. There is only one room, cave-like, with one painting. It is interesting to see something of the kind from the 12th century, but the 2.5 euro ticket does not seem worth it. I understand they need money to keep it up, but considering the size, it should have been free (with voluntary donation).

A church in the rock. One of a kind! Very small but a must see!
