Chietón Morén Museo y Mercadito de Artesanías

This is the BEST place for souvenirs and handmade goods in San Jose, as all of the products are handcrafted by indigenous artisans throughout Costa Rica. Each item includes the artist’s name, the culture, and the region. When we travel, we are avid collectors of handcrafted Christmas ornaments, and walked out with three beautifully made ornaments (a sloth, a red macaw, and a handpainted gourd). Fellow tourists: skip the mass-produced souvenir shops, and stop here! Lots of different types of authentic goods. The prices are very, very reasonable and affordable. The funds go to support these artists. Wonderful little shop!

This was an absolutely amazing experience! We’d seen many souvenir shops with the same things over and over again, so we were really looking for a local spot that was less touristy, and this shop was absolutely amazing! It had some information about the indigenous groups in Costa Rica that was very interesting but the main draw was the handmade crafts! They were absolutely beautiful and unique, fair trade, with profits going back to the artists, so we were happy to spend over an hour looking around and also bought quite a few things! The workers at the front desk were extremely kind and explained how the items were made as well. I absolutely recommend this little shop!

I loved going here to learn about the indigenous people in Costa Rica. Each group has a different section in the museum to see what their speciality handicraft is. The people who work here are very knowledgeable and friendly. They also speak English! I enjoyed my time here and seeing the culture being shared through their artwork.

The shop has a lot of different crafts and souvenirs made by local indigenous people of Costa Rica. The museum is integrated with the shop, showcasing information and the crafts from that area. It’s interesting and informative, but definitely more like a shop than museum. We found the staff to be really knowledgeable. When you buy an item, that money goes directly to supporting the artist who made the product.

We came for last minute gift shopping and we were not disappointed! Such beautiful and diverse options from housewares to art prints to upcycled clothes and jewelry. I was truly in awe the whole time and the folks who VOLUNTEER to run this fair trade, nonprofit museum and shop were incredibly kind. Don't miss this spot!

Entrance is free, there is some cool info about native people of Costa Rica. The items for sale though are quite expensive so unfortunately I didn’t buy anything.
