I stayed in the female-only room here as my first accommodation during my working holiday. The room was clean, and the staff cleaned everything thoroughly every day. They also held my mail for me, which allowed me to apply for my TFN without any issues. The view from the rooftop is amazing — perfect for chilling and relaxing. Except for a hair dryer, the shared kitchen was well-equipped with essentials like a rice cooker, electric kettle, frying pan, plates, and cups. There are also vending machines for drinks and food. They offer free coffee, and it seems like there’s a weekly sausage party — I wish I had had time to join! If I ever need to stay at a hostel in Brisbane again, I’d definitely love to come back. Thank you so much for everything!

Clean. Heaps of showers on each level. Girl only toilets and showers. (Read the signs, can be embarrassing). Great outside area to hang, near the kitchen. Great big kitchen heaps of space for everyone's stuff. Everyone seems to follow the rules and clean up after themselves. So perfect to the heart of the city close to major railway station. The railway station will get you any where around Australia. Really good experience. The place was clean which i did appreciated..impressive venue.

This is genuinely the most disgusting place I've ever stayed. Our sheets are stained, the bathrooms are dirty and awful, everything is just falling into complete disrepair. To add insult to injury, every member of the reception staff that we interacted with were incredibly rude. We checked out a day early to stay somewhere else, when we really had to compromise our budget to make it happen. While the location is good, I would highly recommend going elsewhere nearby, it's just awful. The hostel simultaneously claims to have parking whilst also refusing to take any responsibility for the carpark which you have to book through Parkable at extortionate rates. Security is non-existent, we were sure to take all our valuables out of our private room each day, just in case, and the building, including the luggage storage area is consistently open to anyone from the street. I've seen the manager respond to other reviews saying that they take security seriously and I can say that this is categorically not the case. There's so much I could say - the bathrooms have no paper towels or hand dryers, there's no shelf in the showers, the corridors are only wide enough for one person at a time, the kitchen is tiny for the amount of people staying there. Essentially, they've entirely focussed on cutting corners to the point that it's just not fit for purpose and just a miserable experience. Avoid at all costs.

Check-in at 3 PM is quite late, and early check-in isn’t allowed. Even at 3 PM, staff weren’t present on my check-in day. Many long-term residents stay here, and the rooms don’t have enough space for personal belongings. No lockers, which are essential for a hostel. The kitchen facilities are poor—some appliances are old and nearly broken. The fridge is always full, making it hard to store food. The walls are thin, so noise from the next room and hallway is easily heard. Some nights, after 10 PM, guests were knocking on doors, shouting, playing loud music, and singing, which was very disturbing. Closing the lift from 11 PM to 8 AM is inconvenient, especially for those with late-night or early-morning buses and flights. The location is great, but these issues need improvement, especially regarding long-term stays and guest behavior.

awful place to stay. if you are a solo woman travelling on her own DO NOT GO HERE was in a room with 4 middle age men and the room was ransid. it was awfully smelly and we couldn’t get the smell to leave. it was also very loud and you could hear everything. the beds feel like there going to fall apart and also like your gonna catch something from them. in the morning the “cleaners” barged into our room while we was making a cup of tea and they chucked all our stuff outside the room. they also tried to take my own towl from home and they put it in the washing bin. literally left asap as felt so unsafe and intimated. DO NOT GO HERE

Classic busy hostel... rooms simply furnished ok, clean ok, good lobby ok... appreciate the cleaning of the private room... perfect location! But I am very annoyed that in winter the air conditioning is on full blast and the rooms are cold... also you are allowed to smoke weed and it stinks everywhere

Nightmarish Stay / Thefts / Discomfort My nearly two-week stay at Cheale Backpackers in Brisbane was a disastrous experience, marked by recurring thefts and staff who were not only unhelpful but hostile. I was the victim of multiple thefts (shoes, towel, shampoo, food), totaling approximately $200. Despite my immediate complaints about each incident, no assistance was provided, and I was told that the surveillance cameras upstairs weren't working. My shoes were stolen from a deck that was monitored by a camera, and even my "secured" belongings in the garage were missing. The lack of security is blatant, and numerous testimonies from other residents confirm this insecurity, including for private rooms. Beyond the thefts, the hostel management is unacceptable: * Hostility from the staff: When I threatened to leave a negative review, I was threatened with immediate eviction, claiming they "heard me on the cameras" (which apparently weren't working a few days earlier). They therefore forced me to find alternative accommodations that day. * Practical problems: The kitchens are closed at inappropriate times, events aren't advertised, and the rules are arbitrary (no noise while playing ping-pong on the ground floor after 9 p.m.). * Excessive costs: A load of laundry costs $14 (machine, dryer, powder), with no guarantee that no one will stop your cycle. * High beds without phone jacks, poor-quality access cards, and poor-quality mattresses. Cheale Backpackers is a place where you feel unsafe, ignored, and disrespected. Avoid at all costs.

Well reading all the bad reviews before I came here I was curious about staying here but I have to say it is a really good place to stay, you meet different people from all over the world, the staff are very helpful to make your stay comfortable and relaxing, I have stayed at many backpackers in my time but this place is the best and cheaps place to stay, it is so convenient and close to transport, food, shopping and the city life. If you want something to look forward to I highly recommend to stay here, very chill and there is no cockroachers and the place is clean 3 times a day I rate this place 5 star for everything.

Yelp
Great location with friendly staff and environment. The CBD is a short 20 min walk, across the street are nice shops and restaurants. Everything was easy

Yelp
This is one of many hostels in Brisbane. Service and prices are average to a little above average maybe. The view on the rooftop next to their irish pub is quiet nice though. Overall a nice place to stay to hang out with fellow backpackers!

Yelp
Nice and clean hostel, they have a bar right on premisses that does really nice food and entertainment most days during the week. Staff are quite friendly and willing to help, the only bad thing I can really say is that we had to wait for quite a while before we could check in and before our rooms where cleaned. Everything else was bang on.

Yelp
I used this place a few times, and always found it to be one of the better hostels. It's a 5-10 minute walk away from the main area, Queen Street, but literally a stone's throw from the main train and bus station. The hostel itself is the usual backpackers haven. A communal tv come kitchen area that's always busy, and a large pool with plenty of sunbeds!! The staff, as with most hostels, can be backpackers too, but i've always found them very helpful and friendly.
