Nightmarish Stay / Thefts / Discomfort
My nearly two-week stay at Cheale Backpackers in Brisbane was a disastrous experience, marked by recurring thefts and staff who were not only unhelpful but hostile.
I was the victim of multiple thefts (shoes, towel, shampoo, food), totaling approximately $200. Despite my immediate complaints about each incident, no assistance was provided, and I was told that the surveillance cameras upstairs weren't working. My shoes were stolen from a deck that was monitored by a camera, and even my "secured" belongings in the garage were missing. The lack of security is blatant, and numerous testimonies from other residents confirm this insecurity, including for private rooms.
Beyond the thefts, the hostel management is unacceptable:
* Hostility from the staff: When I threatened to leave a negative review, I was threatened with immediate eviction, claiming they "heard me on the cameras" (which apparently weren't working a few days earlier). They therefore forced me to find alternative accommodations that day.
* Practical problems: The kitchens are closed at inappropriate times, events aren't advertised, and the rules are arbitrary (no noise while playing ping-pong on the ground floor after 9 p.m.).
* Excessive costs: A load of laundry costs $14 (machine, dryer, powder), with no guarantee that no one will stop your cycle.
* High beds without phone jacks, poor-quality access cards, and poor-quality mattresses.
Cheale Backpackers is a place where you feel unsafe, ignored, and disrespected. Avoid at all costs.
