A Second Act For Bad Vegan’s Sarma Melngailis

"An earlier restaurant opened by the investor in question; his experience with this venture included legal trouble — he was later imprisoned for fraud in the mid-1990s — and subsequent frustration at being portrayed poorly by reality-TV producers, which informs his sensitivity about media representation." - Allen Salkin

My son and I decided to come in for an early dinner. We ordered the Pu Pu platter for starters. The coconut shrimp was very juicy and tasty. Also, the chicken wings were very crispy. Everything on the appetizer was fresh and served nice and hot. They have a hot mustard that’s made with wasabi, which will definitely clear your sinuses which I like. My son ordered the beef fried rice, which was absolutely amazing. (the best on the west side of town.) I ordered the chow fun noodles with beef and I have to say that they are not skimpy with their meat. Nice big pieces and very fresh and juicy. I am happy that we don’t have to drive 25 minutes to Phoenix to get some great Chinese food. Everybody was very friendly and accommodating. We will definitely be returning.

Google
Downsizing and skimping! Long time customers: 2 eggrolls 5.99. Now hors d’oeuvre size! Found an eggroll in my frig from end of Sept for comparison. Really? And the hot and sour soup does not have chicken in it anymore. Ingredients like water chestnuts have been omitted from the Kung poa chicken dish. We will be cutting out the appetizers and soup from now on. So disappointed.

Melissa R.

Google
Awesome portion sizes and great prices! Been going for years and has always been good. It was a busy day and our server was struggling. He was super nice, but took an extra hour just waiting to order, request refills, and pay.

Google
Took my granddaughter she was craving Chinese food so we googled nearest restaurant, she rarely eats anything i was impressed with the staff very nice and polite we enjoyed our dinner it had great flavor the Mongolian Beef was best I ever had. Granddaughter actually ate her food portions were perfect. We will be back!

Google
My review is all about the hot and sour soup. I moved here 4 years ago and can't believe I hadn't tried china grill for the soup! If you want a true hot and sour soup, this is the place!!! We did get other plates that were also just perfect and full of flavor! My new favorite Chinese food place!

Sam “Bee” J.

Google
Popped in on an off chance because I was hungry, and safe to say this place is great! Staff was kind, patient, and humerous! I don't think I've ever had better grilled chicken in a restaurant in a long time too. Perfectly cooked, tender, beautifully seasoned and flavorful, and good rice to go with! Definitely worth the small wait, and definitely a place to come back to. Honestly, my ONLY complaint is the lighting, it's a little dark in there, but everything else is pretty much a 10/10! (And the chicken potstickers were nearly the size of my palm, delicious!!)

Izzy S.

Google
First time eating here. The parking lot was full. Walked in, and the room had only a few couples in there. We laughed when they said there was a 30-minute wait for a booth. Went to the bathroom to wash our hands. There was another room that was jammed pack. That explains the wait. The food was really good. I was disappointed with the size of the egg roll. 😃 everything else was great. Will come back.

Google
The first time I came here the service was fast and the food was very good and hot. I had hot tea to drink and my meal was teriyaki chicken. Was Friday March- 1- 2024 I ordered the poo poo platter the meat was bad it stunk like the meat was not keep in the fridge. It was not edible to eat not going back there again. I don't like getting sick from someone not preparing the meat correctly.

Yelp
This is my second visit in 6 mos. I leave in N. Phoenix so it's a bit of a drive. I had the Mongolian beef lunch.. so good. I got the Spring tolls too. So yummy! Real Fresh vegetables not that white pasty filling many Chinese restaurants are using to fill spring rolls. Everything tasted so good. I wish I lived closer I'd be here several times a week! The rice was fresh and very hot. The Mongolian beef had the rice noodles and lite garnish of green onion- the way it's supposed to be!! And the beef was so good. Too many Chinese restaurants are using the cheap glued beef but not here!! I will be driving over more often!!! Very clean restaurant. Very friendly and helpful servers too. China Grill is amazing. I will definitely be back with friends!! Please don't change anything because you have a good thing going here!! I HIGHLY recommend!! A Oh, prices are really affordable!! Please go try China Grill!!

Yelp
Came here cause it was close by to where I was for the afternoon. Atmosphere is very friendly and warm, I love this! Hard to find places like this anymore. Seems like the kind of place of you come here regularly, they will remember you and greet you like family or friend. I ordered hot and sour soup, mushu chicken, beef with broccoli and yushan shrimp to go. Can't wait to taste the food!
google avatar

Sara M.

Yelp
Grabbed some takeout from China Grill for dinner one night. Service was quick, the inside during pickup was clean and the food was delicious! We picked up an order of teriyaki chicken, orange chicken and an egg roll. The chicken on both was great and not full of fat or weird. The flavors were perfect. The egg roll was stuffed and served with a house made hot mustard. It was so good with the sweet and sour. Overall, a great stop for a Chinese food fix. Great food, big portions for your money!

Yelp
If you're looking for a friendly neighborhood Chinese restaurant this is the spot THE food is my Chinese comfort food. The service is excellent and the ambiance is cozy.
google avatar

Poppy B.

Yelp
Great food! The egg rolls are made fresh and are delicious. Waiter was very helpful. We will definitely go back again.
google avatar

Yelp
I score on the food first. Atmosphere is typical for a local Chinese restaurant. Most importantly it was kept clean enough. Food and service were great. That excites me since I don't know of many good Chinese restaurants. We only had two dishes off the lunch menu. I ordered the chicken curry with dark meat which came with soup and an egg roll. We tried the hot and sour soup which was very tasty. The egg roll was really one of the best I have had in a long time. My curry dish was so good that my husband ended it up wanting more of mine. He ordered the beef and broccoli bowl which we felt had very good flavor. For the same price ($8.99) I felt my lunch plate was the better deal. I look forward to bringing my family back.

Yelp
I love the food at this restaurant but prefer take out. When I go to a restaurant I want to hear music from the region not Mix FM with commercials. It was annoying and even my guests commented. The good is amazing! I've always had fast service.
google avatar

Art E.

Yelp
Very good, very delicious, served fast. They are very attentive to their clientele and I never need to wait for my iced tea to be refilled. (I love that) portions are large and it's a quaint little place. Highly recommended to anyone who loves Chinese food.

Barb A.

Yelp
First time ordering from here. Restaurant only 1/2 mile away. Delivery was 20 minutes past delivery time. Unfortunately, food was ice cold and chicken soggy. I generally only write reviews when it's been very positive or very negative. I'm sure this was mostly delivery service issue, but still reflects on the restaurant.

Yelp
Was in the mood for some comfort food after a day of work. Found they had decent reviews, so decided to stop in. Ordered a Kirin Ichiban beer and the chicken foo yuh dinner and swapped out the fried rice with plain steamed rice and a side of lo mein. Food was good considering it was in Phoenix.

Jen S.

Yelp
The fried rice is the worst ever! Tasted like they tried to refresh it from yesterday's left overs!

Dawn B.

Yelp
The best Chinese food I've found in Peoria. Fresh ingredients, delicious dishes, and not greasy like other Chinese restaurants. Great service. Very friendly staff and owners, We've been customers for about 16 years and order from them regularly. Awesome family...Hi Charlie, Hi Ann! From Dawn and Dave, I think they know us by now.

Shawnee M.

Yelp
Service was very quick and attentive. The atmosphere feels very clean and setting is what you would expect from a Chinese restaurant. I ordered the twice cooked shrimp and egg drop soup for the choice of soup. The food was hot and fresh and had great flavor to it.

D L.

Yelp
Just stopped in for a to go order for dinner. Their front seems to have been damaged (they have plywood covering their front window, or lack there of) anyway, it was clean and it looked like there was plenty of seating. Anyway, I ordered Mongolian Beef, Pork fried rice and Chicken lo mein...didnt have to wait long for my food, service was that good! Got home and the food was hot and delicious! Definitely coming back!

Cheryl H.

Yelp
I just had a great experience at that restaurant. Had a great mai tai made by Charlie at the bar waiting for my food got home and the food is excellent.

Yelp
Amazing food on christmas day. We got take out it was perfect. The chicken beast with with veggis were delightful.
google avatar

Peter N.

Yelp
I get mapu tofu every week or so. My kids love it and they are picky eaters. The staff recognize me as the mapu tofu guy now.
google avatar

Shara N.

Yelp
Great spot in a plaza. Been here a couple times and both were great experiences. Super nice employees, delicious food. Not overly sugary and sweet like unauthentic American Asian food, feels very homey.
google avatar

Raquel H.

Yelp
To be honest I was a bit scared to try this place because of my past experience with other restaurants. I am so happy I gave them a try because it was all so delicious and it was pretty quick for the size of our order. It was also on Christmas so it was nice that they were open. We have since been back. All take out, so I can't really speak on the location but for pick up the food still gets there hot. We will definitely order again
google avatar

Jen P.

Yelp
I love this place. Food is excellent! Service is great too. I really love getting the dinner or lunch specials. I introduced my parents to this restaurant and now it's my Dad's favorite spot.
google avatar

Katrinka T.

Yelp
It was the first time eating there with my sister, I could only find it when it was closed! Well I finally remembered the correct location. I had Moo Goo Gai Pan. It was good and even better the next day! I also had Shrimp fried rice. My sister had Combination Lo Mein & Chicken egg rolls. We will be going back!

Robert S.

Yelp
Great service good environment nice and clean and great food! We ate lunch in there and it was excellent. Evening and meal menu looks wonderful.

Yelp
China Grill is a tasty treat. We've been here several times now and came away impressed with both the food and family who owns the restaurant. They are very friendly and go out of their way to make your visit memorable. A few musts when you come here: Potstickers, Spicy Won-Tons, all of the Chicken dishes (Kung Pao, General Tso, Orange Chicken), and their Soups. We also like their Plum Wine. Expect to pay $15 to $25 each, depending on how ravished you are for some yum Chinese comfort food. Enjoy!

Daisy G.

Yelp
DO NOT GO HERE! Give your money to people who actually give proper portions. This would be a great place to go for people on a diet. If you want to satisfy your appetite or get your moneys worth do not come. Smallest servings i've ever been served in my life. Not only are the servings so small, but the food is incredibly bland and flavorless like they didn't even season the food. It genuinely tastes like school lunch. Save your money, there's so many different chinese kitchens who actually take pride in their dishes!
google avatar

Bilo K.

Yelp
This place is one of the best Chinese food spots on the west side. Ice cold beers, fun drinks, and the specialty grill items are top quality. I have been coming here for years and they are consistent. Family run restaurant with amazing menu items. Give it a try you will not be disappointed!

Jay S.

Yelp
Really good food and service came in for a late night dinner and the dinner specials are perfect portion. Never been before but will be back now! Had the chicken curry and sesame chicken.

Steve E.

Yelp
I have sampled many appetizers and entrées on the extensive menu. Nothing ever disappoints. Moo Shu Pork is my absolute favorite. The service is excellent. The dining area is clean and inviting. China Grill offers the best Asian cuisine on the west side of town.

Richard M D.

Yelp
So far...this place beats every other Chinese restaurant in our immediate area. Service was good; ambiance typical and food prepared well, with ample portions.
google avatar

Janelle F.

Yelp
We've been coming here for decades. It is always delicious, consistent and friendly service. Not one thing I would change.

Virginia J.

Yelp
First time experience wasn't exciting. The food was warm wasn't hot. Some of the stuff tasted OK but I have a thing about warm, cool food. It should be hot and it wasn't so that kind of spoil it for me.
google avatar

B S.

Yelp
The food was good. Visited here while on a business trip with a friend. Very friendly staff, friendly ambiance, excellent service, and attentive. The staff makes you feel comfortable enough to clean up and put your dishes in the kitchen as of you were home. Overall, great experience.
google avatar

Yelp
This my new "go to" place for Chinese food. We ordered the veggies with chicken and it was more than enough for 2 people. We ordered a cup of the egg drop soup and the hot and sour. Both were delicious. Great waitstaff and can't wait to try more dishes.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
These are kind people. They take a great deal of pride in their service and the quality of their food. Only decent hot and sour soup I have found locally. Steamed vegetables palatable. I'm pretty habitual with my orange chicken but will branch out. Bit of a drive for me, well worth it. Look forward to more exploration of their substantial and varied menu. Kudos!
google avatar

Bill R.

Yelp
This place is really good. They have some of the best hot and sour soup I've had since I've moved to Phoenix.
google avatar

Brooke D.

Yelp
DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS PLACE! VERY small portions and not worth the price plus the gentleman who answered the phone was very rude and hung up on!

Bailey J.

Yelp
We love this place. The owner is the sweetest and takes time to ask us how our family is. The food has NEVER disappointed. Try the mandarin ribs!
google avatar

Misty M.

Yelp
Oh my goodness this place is amazing. My husband, kids and I was out and about we seen this place while we were turning. My husband and I decided to try this place since he's heard good things about it. They didn't disappoint in anything. Everyone was very polite, well mannered and happy people. Which is hard to find nowadays. This is now our place that we'll be going from now on. I'm an extremely picky person when it comes to my Chinese food and I won't tell anyone it's good if it's not.

Kevin D.

Yelp
Food was adequate. Nothing special. They must think they're a 5 star restaurant as they charge $3 extra if you want to share a meal. Then they strongly suggest ordering an appetizer to "avoid" the extra charge. Entrance is all cluttered with boxes and what looks to be gym lockers. Don't appreciate the boosting of sales through BS Charges. It was our first visit and probably will be our last. Don't like being coerced into ordering more food than we want or being penalized with extra fees.

Richard B.

Yelp
First time at this restaurant and we were not disappointed! We ordered mu shu pork and it was delicious! Lots of filling and was a great hoisin sauce. The plate came with four wrappers filled to bursting with pork, vegetables and sprouts. We also ordered crispy shrimp which was devine. It was really nice and crispy. We shared a small order of hot and sour soup which is definitely some of the best we have ever had. We are so pleased with our experience we will definitely be back. Being new to the area it was great that our first experience with a restaurant was so delicious and the service excellent!

Yelp
My wife and I have been steadily trying new Chinese food joints around the local area and yesterday evening, Yelp recommended China Grill. It's conveniently located off 75th and Thunderbird on the cusp of Glendale and Peoria. It's your typical Chinese restaurant that focuses more so on their take-out customers than the customers who dine-in. There is ample seating for a Chinese restaurant which left me pleasantly surprised when I walked inside. I wasn't expecting that. The interior is clean, the staff is friendly and my takeout order was placed promptly. I had our food in less than 15 minutes which always amazes me. How in the heck did you cook all of this food in a span of 12 minutes? I went with the Mongolian Beef which is one of their signature dishes. Typically, this is a fairly spicy dish and unfortunately, it had no spice at all. In fact, certain bites actually tasted sweet to me. The thin rice noodles were flavorless, but the veggies were crisp and crunchy which was great. Normally, the peas and broccoli are green mush, but I enjoyed the freshness of the veggies. The rice was steamed well. The eggrolls were among the best I've ever had, but the Mongolian Beef entree is what left me disappointed. I am definitely going to go back because overall, the service was excellent and the eggroll was phenomenal... but that darn entree just ruined it for me. I am going to try them again and order something different next time because I think they deserve a second chance. The order itself was perfect and the food is very reasonable. Plenty of ample parking and a very convenient location! I would recommend this place to fellow Yelp'ers, but I would steer clear of the entree I ordered unless they re-vamp the recipe. Service, pricing and location is reason enough to give them another go.
google avatar

Tyler B.

Yelp
Food was fantastic! The service was great and the people who work there are friendly and fun to talk to. It's a great little place off of thunderbird in Peoria and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves Chinese food!
google avatar

Athena M.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in AZ hands down, the service is always quick and friendly! Environment is quiet and cute. Been coming here for over 10 years. It's always been the best. I love China grill

Dustin L.

Yelp
We have eaten here a few times and it was good. Not sure if they switched kitchen staff but we got delivery tonight and the food was terrible. Orange chicken was deep fried with no sauce on it, hot and sour soup was sweet. Low mein was terrible as well. We will not being go back. Waste of $40.
google avatar

Obese T.

Yelp
Stopped after a fun day of family time. Found on YELP and very glad. Cozy atmosphere (read small), happily only one table when we arrived. There are tables and half booths. I sat in a half booth which was very comfortable. The tables move so access to the booth was easy, whew! Although it was lunch, our very nice server advised the dinner menu was available. We decided on the lunch dishes. I had the Crazy Spicy chicken. It was really good, but salty. It was spicy as its name indicated. Vegetables were crunchy, with tender pieces of chicken. I'd love to order this again but it was too salty for my taste. One person ordered the Chicken Lo Mein and loved it. Another ordered the S&S Chicken and highly recommended it. We also ordered Pork Fried Rice which was so amazing it completely saved the day! Full of big pieces of BBQ pork, not the small pieces I'm used to. It was well seasoned, not salty, not greasy. Perfect. Speaking of perfect: if you're a Hot & Spicy soup lover, you need to get over here quickly because this soup is the King of soups. The next time I'm n this area i will be sure to pick up Hot and Sour soup as well as the Pork Fried rice. All and all, lunch portions seem small, but were filling. No one left hungry. As I mentioned, our server was very attentive to us and I appreciate her helping us choose our selections. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

April V.

Yelp
Yummy lunch, Sweet and Sour Chicken was hot, flavorful and portion was just right for lunch. Service was great. Always a great go to.
google avatar

Vanessa C.

Yelp
Ordered and paid for Honey Shrimp and received Honey Chicken. We have not eaten chicken, beef or pork in 5 years and of course we took a bite of this without second guessing. Since we don't eat this we had to drive all the way back to get our correct shrimp order where they thought I'd bring back the chicken that we touched and bit?? To reuse? Or because they didn't believe me? I just hope we don't get sick from eating poultry now. Be careful ordering here if you have allergies or diet restrictions.
google avatar

Tracy K.

Yelp
They are really nice. Good service. Sauces veggies rice are great. BUT WHERE IS THE CHICKEN? MY KUNG PAO chicken had hardly any chicken. And the few pieces there were, had lots of fat - poor quality chicken. Been going there for 10 or 15 years. And over last 4 years- very disappointed. Cant you afford to include protein? And quality protein? So disappointing. Spent $27 for 2 meals. And hardly any chicken. Want to frequent you - you are blocks away. But we want meat with our food. ‍ Oh and this isn't first experience with lacking chicken here. Been like the last 5 times there. Even had breaded chicken where it was all breading and no chicken. We like chicken with our chinese food. And unfortunately China Grill is apparently anti chicken. Such a shame

Antonio B.

Yelp
Good and service is always good. My favorite Chinese restaurant! I always do the Mongolian beef and chicken options. The shrimp dishes never disappoint either.
google avatar

Bonnie E.

Yelp
Fairly good size trip mall place with competent service, and good food. With one exception...I didn't care for the egg drop soup. Reason? Mushrooms in it. I love mushrooms but apparently not the variety in this particular egg drop soup. (I'd venture to say that this is the first time I've encountered really big slices of 'shrooms that didn't add any flavor.) Egg drop is pretty standard in my order and even without the mushrooms the soup/broth itself was rather just "OK." Better than the last place I had egg drop soup but far from "delicious." The mongo beef was solid four star as was one of the Chef's Specialities "Bobo Chicken." So those two items were indeed worth signing up for a repeat visit, likely sooner than later. We'll definitely try here again and I'll give the won-ton soup a shot and see if I can't overcome them egg-dropping the ball ;) I do like that they keep business open during the "slow time" between lunch and dinner. Thanks!
