The Essential Road Trip Guide to Pinto Canyon

"Toward the end of Pinto Canyon Road the route forks to Chinati Hot Springs, a desert hot-springs resort where water emerges at about 113°F into a tiled soaking pool beneath a grove of rustling cottonwoods (with a cold pool a short walk uphill); cabins must be reserved in advance because there are no day passes and it books up quickly." - Eva Frederick

I retreated to Chinati Hot Springs on a whim when Big Bend was forecast to get snow and bitter cold winds in early February. Compared with my other hotel options the Chinati Hot Springs was well worth the price and the longer drive to get there. Definitely don’t use Google maps to get there, instead follow the directions from the Hot Springs website. This place was pure bliss! The room was cozy and well adorned. I love the way the whole property is set up for endless lounging opportunities. I would look forward to returning with friends in warmer weather to enjoy grilling, drinking margaritas, and enjoying a soak and beautiful sunset. The host wasn’t super warm and welcoming, though she may have been preoccupied with helping another guest who had a flat tire… She checked me in quickly, showed me around the resort and left me to enjoy my time soaking and relaxing. Exploring the property, it’s clear that the current owners are doing a lot of work to improve the already fantastic facilities. Kudos for that!

Chinati Hot Springs will forever be one of my favorite places to visit in Texas. We rented the entire property and hosted our wedding here with 17 of our closest friends. The caretakers went above and beyond to ensure our wedding/ stay was simply perfect. I truly loved having the pool and hot springs all to ourselves as well as the community kitchen and firepit. We all adored Jefe the cat, the views from the ridgeline and the breathtaking ambience of golden hour during our wedding ceremony. Also, the air conditioned cabins were absolutely pristine. We couldn’t be more thankful for the amazing experience we had and I would highly recommend Chinati Hot Springs to anyone looking for the ideal West Texas get away. Thank you again for treating us so kindly. I will never forget it. Oh and I’ll be back next October!

Gosh I hope this place never changes. It’s like stepping back in time. The buildings are pure, simple and beautiful, holding true to border aesthetic in these sturdy adobes painted brightly and obviously well cared for and maintained. I doubt it looks very different from say, 1940. There’s so few places left like this. There’s no Wi-Fi, no stores anywhere close by. It’s incredibly remote. It is place to truly stop and just be. The communal facilities, kitchen and shower are perfectly functional and spacious. The kitchen is very large with everything you need and has plenty of tables. The rooms (I stayed El Dorado) are very clean and comfortable with all the right simple and charming decorative touches. The hosts/managers are very helpful and friendly. In the era of air bnb, Instagram, and investor owned “experiences” this is a true gem. I have no idea who owns this place, but I assume they read the reviews. You’re doing it perfectly. People need simple rustic un disturbed quiet places to go… to look at the stars, soak and feel a magic that is real.

El Patron room was small and rustic. Had everything that we needed. Private outdoor shower and tub were a hoot. Especially when my wife realize she would be showering outdoors! The field mouse in the tub caused a little excitement. Wife caught it and released it outside the cabin. Bed was very comfortable, but was a little too large for the size of the room. A queen size would be adequate. Dan and Diana are great hosts and gave us a lot of good information regarding local communities and the flora and fauna. The community kitchen and facilities were more than adequate. The hot spring was about 40 feet from our door. Sitting in the spring and watching the stars in the night sky was relaxing. This is a great place to stay for a few days and I highly recommend it.

Fantastic little gem hidden in the desert. Rooms are small and they have a shared restroom area. However, there is one room with a tub (which I stayed in). The place is clean and tidy! Everything is very remote and no cell service. Be sure to bring food as the kitchen has everything you need including refrigerators. The staff is very kind! Will definitely be back!

Wonderful people. We had a slow leak in our tire from the rental, middle of nowhere. They were so helpful and even had something for us to fill the tire. Very laid back as well. Recommend staying

I’m almost hesitant to leave a review lest the secret get out but I don’t gatekeep. This place is tremendous! It’s secluded and feels like quite a wild spit of country. When we were there, the only other visitors were a group of archaeologists working a project nearby. I would suggest driving in on Pinto Canyon Rd and driving out on 170 for the full experience.

Not on the way to ANYWHERE: near the west end of the river road (FM 170). I am a hot springs 'fishinado. Not totally sure, but I believe this is the only natural hot springs resort in Texas. It is a shining jewel and we will be back. Beds are comfy, sheets and pillows are soft. Hot Springs is a single tile & stone tub that seats 8 comfortably. Water runs 98 to 101....just right to satisfy 95% of hot tub 'fishinados. Cold pool up the hill doubles as a GREAT star gazing platform at night. Big communal kitchen has the gear needed to prepare & serve just about any meal. Rooms have standard hotel fridges, but the communal kitchen has several full size refrigerators. BRING ADEQUATE FOOD PROVISIONS....you are over 1 hour away from any stores (Presidio). If you stay over a full day, take a morning or an evening hike up the arroyo...its a nice stroll. It's like camping but with a complete kitchen, furniture, hot & cool pools, and nice comfy beds!
