This Tour Company Is Sharing the Untold Stories of Manhattan’s Chinatown With Local-led Tours

"Led by lifelong residents, this Manhattan-based tour company delivers intimate, immersive walks that felt personal and authentic to me—more like hanging out with friends showing you their neighborhood than a run-of-the-mill tour. On the Chinatown Underworld Premium Experience I joined, our guest hosts included Michael Lau, the former commanding officer of the NYPD’s 5th Precinct who patrolled the area during the 1980s and 1990s, and a former member of the Flying Dragons gang; walking with them, every building sparked lived memories, and standing on Pell Street, the gang’s former territory, I could ask candid questions I’ve never been able to ask elsewhere. Cofounders Roger Lee, who grew up here, and Bernice Pfluger created these tours to surface Chinatown’s resilience, culture, and untold local narratives and to help steer support to the neighborhood’s small businesses. Beyond the Underworld tour (also offered in a shorter format with a single speaker), there’s a food-focused Flavors of Asia experience with tastings at family-run spots spanning Malaysian roti canai, Vietnamese banh mi, Korean fried chicken, and Japanese desserts, plus a premium food tour guided by Chinatown native and Chopped winner chef Eric Kwan; no two tours are the same, and even well-known guests like Ronny Chieng, Andrew Fung, and CeFaan Kim have joined." - Rachel Chang Rachel Chang Rachel Chang is a travel and pop culture journalist who contributes to Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Lonely Planet, and more. A must for New Yorkers and tourists alike! I attended the Chinatown Legacy Tour on a Sunday with Bernice as my tour guide and found the entire experience enlightening and fun. I learned so much about the history of Chinatown — things I’ve somehow never known about a city I’ve lived in for nearly four years — and every story opened my eyes to the history and culture of the neighborhood. I can’t wait to go back to attend a second tour to experience the Flavors of Asia and learn more about the legacy and culture of Chinatown. 🥰

This place was great! We did both the underground and the food tour. Both were phenomenal for unique reasons. You get a first hand account of the gang activity and street life during the underground tour from a variety of perspectives (kids who grew up in the neighborhood, the retired police officer who walked the beat, and an ex gang member). Along the way you stop by local businesses and see their perspectives also. The food tour was phenomenal. Felt like a collection of hidden gems being shown to you by a friend you are visiting. I lived in Chinatown for years, but am not a tourist. I think this tour is great for anybody, locals and tourists. It’s a first hand account and a piece of history! Highly recommend.

Chinatown legacy tour, was definitely one of the best tours I've ever been on, if not the best. Before attending the tour I already knew a lot about the history, so to go around the actual streets and hear first hand stories from Roger and Michael, and also to meet Woody, so interesting and exciting, it made me feel like I was back in the 70's and 80's when all the gangs were still active. Gave me goosebumps. I loved every minute of it. Couldn't have asked for better hosts. This made my holiday to NYC! You have a fan for life! Highly recommend to anyone interested in tours and history in general and especially Chinatown Manhattan, you won't be disappointed, I was so immersed in it all by the end I forgot to take pics. Thanks so much guys, I can't wait to do it all again on my next visit!

We really had an amazing tour with Chinatown Legacy Tours. I am a lifelong New Yorker, and spent quite a bit of time in Chinatown over the years. There is a massive amount of history and experience that is hidden behind the shops and restaurants - this tour touched on many of these areas. I actually took a few hours that night to read through some of the other resources out there; they did a great job inspiring me to dig deeper into the material. We appreciated Bernice's knowledge - she really brought a personal and authentic feel to the tour; these folks actually *lived* through these experiences, and that added so much depth to the stories. I fully recommend Chinatown Legacy Tours to any visitor or any NY local. I'll never look at Chinatown the same again!

Delicious and Insightful! The Chinatown Legacy Tours Flavors of Food experience was fantastic! Our guide Bernice @chowchowchow was engaging and knowledgeable, sharing great cultural and informative insights at each stop. We started our journey from Cafe Diem with cup of herbal tea to clear our palette. We continued our way through 5 amazing carefully selected establishments from NB Wing Wong (Cantonese), Tofu Tofu (Korean), Nha Trang 1 (Vietnamese), Curry House (Malaysian), and ended with a tasty cheese tart from Pink Lady (Japanese). A fun, intimate, and flavorful way to explore Chinatown. Highly recommend! #chinatownlegacytours #foodtours

I attended a Chinatown food tour with Chinatown Legacy Tours and had a fantastic time! The tour was about 2-1/2 hours and it was led by their very knowledgeable tour guide, Bernice, who was born and raised in Chinatown. She took us through her personal curated list of hidden gems in Chinatown and gave a bit of history regarding the restaurants and the streets where the restaurants were located. As a New Yorker myself, I always felt like I knew Chinatown, but I learned of new places and interesting historical tidbits from her that I would not have learned otherwise. It was an afternoon well-spent, and my stomach left full and satisfied. I highly recommend this tour even to native New Yorkers!

I recently took the Chinatown Legacy Tour, and it was an unforgettable experience. Our tour guide, Bernice, was fantastic. She was knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the history and stories of the neighborhood. I learned so much, not just about Chinatown itself, but about the cultural and historical forces that shaped it. What made the tour truly unique was hearing from both a former detective and a former gang member who had served time in prison. Their firsthand accounts offered powerful, honest perspectives that you won’t find in any textbook or museum. The contrast and overlap between their stories added incredible depth to the experience, making it both eye-opening and moving. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to understand the legacy of Chinatown on a much deeper level. Will be going back for the food tour as well!

The Chinatown Legacy Tours experience is absolutely fabulous. Bernice is so knowledgeable about the area and makes the whole experience incredibly immersive. I participated in the Underworld tour, and we were even able to talk to a former gang member as part of it -- this made the history feel so real and intertwined with the present. Would strongly recommend for anyone who wants to learn more about Chinatown and its past!
