How a younger generation is reinventing Munich's beer scene - SilverKris

"The park’s iconic, large-scale beer garden centered on the Chinese-style tower that is another long-established gathering spot; like other major beer-garden sites run by the city, it is contractually tied to a single traditional brewery so visitors should expect that brand rather than a wide craft selection on tap." - Alexander Wolff

Google
Historical landmark in the city park "English Garden" which was a gift to a former king. It's popular with tourists and locals alike. You can walk around it but it's closed for the public. There's a beer garden around it. Everything clean, tidy and well-maintained.

Kristina

Google
A very atmospheric place. I was there on Saturday, and in the tower a live orchestra was playing. Around it, there is a beer garden where you can try HB beer and lots of German food.

Google
The ultimate Munich vibe. Tucked inside the English Garden, this iconic beer garden sits beneath a 25-meter-high wooden Chinese pagoda, originally built in 1789. Imagine sipping a cold Bavarian beer with thousands of locals and tourists while a brass band plays from the tower on weekends. With space for over 7,000 people, it's one of the largest and liveliest beer gardens in the city, and whether you're chilling in the sun or grabbing a giant pretzel, it's the place where Munich's heart beats!

Google
⭐ Chinesischer Turm – Englischer Garten, Munich A picturesque wooden pagoda rising amid a lively Bavarian beer garden—built in 1790, restored in 1952 after WWII. Enjoy Hofbräu beer and classic Bavarian eats under chestnut trees at one of Munich’s favorite gathering spots. Weekends bring live brass bands and, in July, the early-morning Kocherlball dance tradition. A historic carousel and children’s playground add family charm. Easy access via U3/U6 or bus. #Munich #BeerGarden #ChinesischerTurm #BavarianTradition #EnglishGarden

Google
Nice place to spend some time like a real citizen - have a beer with your colleagues with traditional food. There was a band located in the the tower playing live music but I am not sure if they are there every day (I was on a Saturday). Great communication since multiple city buses are stopping there. There is no entry fee.

Cassandra

Google
Wonderful Christmas market with live music and local goods.

Google
Great vibe for beer lovers. Unfortunately, when we reached the place, it started raining heavily and all the counters suspended services temporarily because of it. Once it resumed, we were able to get beer and food and had an amazing time.

Google
How can you not stop at this Biergarten while in Munich as its one of the largest in the city. You can get here multiple ways, walk, bike, or even drive as there is a parking lot near by. The food was good and they had a decent selection of entrees to choose from that you can pair with a dessert or pretzel. Worth checking out even if beer isn’t your thing.

Yelp
What a fun beer garden in the English Garden of Munich. Great Bavarian food and of course beer with the beauty of a garden preserved since the 1700's. I highly recommend a bike tour as there are several beer gardens in the English Garden.... Highlight for us was being there during Octoberfest

Yelp
If you're going to go hit up a tourist spot biergarten in Munich, this was a thoroughly enjoyable one. A good selection of foods that you get to choose from cafeteria-style and everything tasted competently done. Deposit is now 2 euros for beer steins, but it's pretty easy to get back. The garden itself is gorgeous and it's fun to listen to the band playing from the second tier of the pagoda.

Yelp
We love the Englischer Garten! Definitely add this on your list of places to visit in the summer time in Munich. Big park where you can sit and drink beer. They come around to your table for beer or you can go up to the stands. At the stands they also have a mini food court with plenty of great lunch options. You'll also hear live music when dining. Great place for kids to run around and have fun while you enjoy a drink.

Yelp
The Chinesischer Turm beer garden is located in the English Garden. It got its name from the Chinese looking pagoda-like tower. When we got there, we went to grab a tray and walked around looking at the food options. We had currywurst with fries, sauerkraut, and watermelon. I enjoyed the food overall. I wished I had mayo on the fries though. I did have some trouble communicating what I wanted to order with the workers. If you order beer, you are given a token. Later, you return the mug with the token to get 1 euro back. I enjoyed my time here. It's a great place to hang out, while eating and drinking.

Yelp
A lovely beer garden with a solid food selection and live music! Don't forget to turn in your tokens at the end to get your deposit back.
google avatar

Yelp
It's the second biggest beer garden in Munich and comes off as a tourist trap, but it's very much a locals place too. Huge selection of Bavarian food and good selection of traditional German beers. Tip: They charge you 1€ for your glass deposit and give you a token for your deposit. Follow the people with empty glasses towards the Toiletten to return your glass and get your 1€ return.

Yelp
It's s standard beer garden with standard beer garden food. The playground is nice. Easy enough to get to by public transportation. I didn't find it as amazing as everyone claimed it would be, but it was nice to sit and relax for a bit while my kid played.

Yelp
Why can't we have cool things like this in America? A Chinese Tower in the middle of an English Garden, within a Germany city...love it! (I guess us Americans can't handle this much awesomeness without screwing it up(ie. douchebags, thieves)) Its a beautiful outdoor atmosphere with a nice outdoor cafeteria selling good affordable traditional German food. Beers are from €3-8 each depending size and type. We were here on a Friday afternoon in September, so no live band, but that would've made it awesome. Otherwise its a nice place to relax, eat, and drink. You'll want to show up hungry and thirsty :) Complaint: there are supposedly about 6000 seating spots...I wish there was a designated non-smoking area. Instead you're playing musical chairs trying to find the best spot away from the smokers...but that's Europe. Travel Tip: Its gonna be a good walk to get here from any U-Bahn station. But go to the Giselastraße U-Bahn, then hop on bus 50, 150, or N44 going west, and the 2nd or 3rd stop should drop you off right in front. See Google Maps.

Yelp
Bring the kids they have a playground. It's right in the English garden and a bus stops right there too It's a Biergarten with all the classic foods and bier!. What more do you ask for ???

Yelp
We really enjoyed this Beer Garden. First of all, the park is gorgeous. There is plenty of seating, especially if you don't mind sharing a table. We didn't encounter any trouble getting our food and drinks. We got our food, then our drinks, then we paid. Easy Peasy. The food was actually really good. I really enjoyed the Roasted Chicken and my husband had the Pork Shank which was really good as well. They sell tomatoes & mozzarella by weight, and that was my side. Husband had some potatoes with his shank. We found the prices to be reasonable. There were a several tourists as well as many locals. So I wouldn't quite label it as a tourist trap. Just a nice stop to get a bite and drink in a gorgeous park. Don't forget to return your mug for your euro.

Yelp
This was my first visit to the Englishergarten in the winter, so it was a beautiful walk to the holiday market. The snow falling on the Chinesisher Turm (Chinese Tower) was particularly lovely. Similar to the other reviewer, this market had the most family-friendly vibe and activities of those I've visited (roughly ten in Munich). There were also wide, smooth paths that allowed parents to push strollers and allowed owners to walk their dogs through the market. A horse-drawn buggy, as well as a larger wagon, was available for rides. There were also two craft huts for the kids that translated to Grandma's (Oma) house and Grandpa's (Opa) house. The rest of the food, drink and craft offerings were similar to the other markets in town. So highly recommended for families and those that want to enjoy a lovely walk in the park followed by some Glühwein to warm you up before heading back to town.

Yelp
I would give this biergarten 100 stars if I could! We spent a beautiful, warm, sunny Sunday afternoon here along with what appeared to be most of Munich. They claim to have 7000 seats and every one was filled. Despite the crowds the beer lines moved quickly and efficiently (love you, Germany!!). We listened to music from a big brass band, drank delicious beers from giant mugs and had good conversation with various table mates. I can't imagine a better way to spend my last afternoon in Munich!
google avatar

Yelp
Before I get into depth, two words: tourist trap. While this may be a beer garden in Munich, it's a bit chaotic to grab your food. Getting in line is not as orderly as you think as you pray that no one accidentally shoves into you when you're holding a cafeteria tray full of food with a liter of beer. The line for us to pay and check out was held up by some angry customer who was complaining nonstop about the food and it didn't help that the line was getting more cramped. Not good when you have to hold a tray of food and beer. As for the food, I really wanted to like the pork shank and bratwürst, but it was disappointing. The shank was too salty and the bratwürst was okay. The potato salad was good, but that was it. Definitely caters to more of a tourist's taste rather than a native's taste. There are much better(and less crowded aka non tourist traps) beer gardens if you do a bit of researching. If you want, look at one of my recent reviews for another beer garden.

Yelp
Three nations represented here. You have a large German biergarten surrounding a Chinese temple within the English Gardens. How this happened beats the heck out of me. I guess I forgot to read the informational plaque. The English Gardens did provide a beautiful and serene backdrop on a warm and clear day in Munich at this outdoor biergarten. The oompah band provided the tunes and played their heavy brass instruments from inside the Chinese temple. A number of food items to choose from, mainly deep fried pig parts, but not much for the health conscious. The beer is Hofbräuhaus in half liter and full liter steins. When you purchase a beer you actually pay 2€ more than the cost of the beer and receive a token as a deposit for the stein. You'll get your deposit back once you return your, hopefully, empty stein. Don't waste beer, it's worse than littering.

Yelp
Gorgeous biergarten in my favourite park in Munich the Englischgarten :-) Although I have walked and cycled by this place on numerous occasions, I have never stopped here for an evening. And that changed today :-)) A friend of mine suggested we meet here for a drink this evening and I am so glad he did ;-) There is a "biergarten" and a "restaurant" so you can have the self service option or the one with waiters. The menus are also slightly different and some of the choices for food in the biergarten are not on the restaurant menu and vice versa. We chose the restaurant option as there was a ton of people in the biergarten and neither of us wanted to queue up for the food and drink. I suspect there was bout 2-3000 people there tonight. The bier of course is great and that goes without saying and the food was also quite good. I had a Matjesfilet (called virgin herring sometimes) main that came with Speckbhoben and Bratkartoffle and it was excellent. Nice salty fish with a lovely bean and ham dish along with pan fried potatoes. My friend had the Schwinebraten and we both had cleaned our plate out. The service was good and quick and the wait staff were quite friendly. All in all a fabulous experience and one that I hope to repeat a lot this summer :-)

Yelp
I loved this beer garden...it may be because it was the first I went to but hey, it was super memorable. I loved it being in the beautiful English Gardens. What a nice backdrop and it was tucked away in the park. The beer was flowing and the food was tasty! Gotta love a giant pretzel and brat! So happy coming here!

Yelp
This place is located right in the middle of the beautiful Englischer Garten. Whenever I go there, I always have a wonderful experience. Even when the weather is not that perfect, it still is great, because the sun also shines inside the people there. The band playing typical songs, people dancing, talking, drinking, and having fun. With all this joy around you, it is easy to get into the same vibe and have a great time there. And you can always borrow some happiness from the tables beside you, if you are feeling a bit down. Of course, they have the typical German/Bavarian dishes which are very tasty but not particularly cheap. If you are a vegetarian, there are many options from which you can choose. If nothing they offer suits you, you can always bring your own food. Obviously, they offer great beer there: it is a "beer garden"! The standard beer mug sizes are 1 and 0.5 Liter. Besides the regular helles Bier (light beer), they also offer Weißbier (wheat beer), Radler (half beer half lemonade), and soft drinks. All of this contributes to create a delightful atmosphere, where people are more open to socialize, talk and get to know each other. If you are not a native German speaker, you can use this opportunity to practice your German language skills. For instance, my German is far from perfect but I always meet friendly people willing to have a nice conversation, such as, groups of friends, couples, old ladies and tourists from other parts of Germany. I really think it does not get better than this: fun music, great food, delicious bier, friendly people, and the beautiful nature around you.

Yelp
Very busy touristy Biergarten. Worth a visit if you e never been and reasonable spot to meet up with people. Beer is decent but Hofbrau is not my favorite beer in Munich. The food from the stalls around the area is all good enough. If you're in the English Garden and want a break for beer and food stop by, otherwise I would suggest heading elsewhere.
google avatar

Katie G.

Yelp
Wandering through the gardens you'll find this watering hole, complete with pagoda, oom-pah band and lots of beer. Grab a table (it's fine to share with strangers, and it gets busy), soak in the atmosphere, and may be even make a few new friends.Recommend the dunklel beer. Tip - you have to leave a deposit for beer glasses, for which you receive a token. Make sure you hold on to it and your glass, as you'll need to return them to the hut labelled "pfend" in order to get your deposit back.

Yelp
The outdoor cafeteria style restaurant and seating is easy maneuver. Service is friendly and fast. The outdoor seating area is clean, convenient and comfortable.

Yelp
Quite big beer garden with food huts on one side. They offer the usual German staples + beers. Apparently they are open late too. Times visited: 1
google avatar

Yelp
Huge beer garden just a few minutes in the English Garden from the city center. It is definitely worth a visit during a sunny day. They serve HB beer.
google avatar

Anne Marie J.

Yelp
Love it! Love it! Love it! So many people, great music, and lots of food. Must get the chicken, skip the spareribs, and of course get the giant pretzel to go. We jacked the stein since 1) we wanted it 2) the deposit was 1€. No wait service but the line goes quick. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
What a cool spot! We rented a few bikes to ride through the English Garden, and we've heard about the Chinese Tower. We didn't expect too much but man, once we got there, we had to get a beer at the beer garden. The pagoda/tower is nothing fancy, and it is a bit random how it is just in the middle of the garden, but still cool to see. At the beer garden, you walk to the section where they sell food and drinks and pay when you leave. It's a good system since you pay an extra 2 Euros for the steins, and when you bring it back, they return the deposit. We just decided to keep our small Hofbrau stein as a souvenir haha. We didn't get any of the food, but a lot of people did. Looked like some people were also pre-gaming before heading off to Oktobefest so it was quite rowdy. Just a really cool place to relax and have a beer!
google avatar

Lin S.

Yelp
I had a great time eating and enjoying the music (the band happens to play that day). I ordered grilled pig's leg + veggies and that was a pretty great experience. I'd only do it once though. The food was definitely too much for me. It's self-service and pretty noisy but really cool immersive experience as a tourist.
google avatar

Justin G.

Yelp
Aka - Beer Garden at the Chinese Tower Decent food and good bavarian beer, who can complain?
google avatar

Chuck C.

Yelp
This place is as worthing reviewing as it is cliche to do so. Located smack in the middle of the English Gardens, Chinesischer Turm (Chinese Tower) is probably the best beer garden in Munich. Why? First of all, its secluded and as such the people who are here are all gathered to do one thing. Chill. No nonsense, no distractions. Just a simple beer garden in one of the most beautiful spots in the city. I mean, even the walk to get here is lovely; approaching from the part of town we stayed in had us cross two crystal clear mini rivers and walk through a little forrest. The sun was shining, the kids were playing with their dogs...you get the picture. As you get closer, there is no mistaking you are in the right spot. There is a rather large tower that looks like, you can walk up it. Don't get excited; unless you're part of the polka band, you're not going up. You can however go into the food and beer court next to it, order a sausage with fries and a liter of beer for a relatively decent price (sausage and fries were around 6 Euro, liter of hells beer was close to 8). Just next to the huge liter pours, they do sell half liters, if you're into that sort of thing... Come here to lounge in the sun and listen to polka music on a nice day as you slowly slip into inebriation on beer that would cost you twice as much in New York.

Yelp
First up - how can it not be amazing - a chinese tower, in the middle of an english garden, in germany. That alone makes it 5 stars. We were there on a semi rainy day, and right before closing, so not a ton of crowds, easy to find a table for 6, and tasty rusian to enjoy! I did not run into the "fee" for the glass.. But the staff was friendly enough, helped us pronounce the drink correctly. Would have liked to enjoy it with some sun and and oompa band, but i was tickled pink to stop in for a beverage.
google avatar

Yelp
Pure chaos. I dare you to throw yourself into the lion's den aka where you're supposed to grab your drank and food. You'd think there would be some orderly line passing through the cafeteria-style food/drink area. But no. You wander around willy-nilly, from the potato bar to the beer section back to the salad spot, trying not to get shoved or even worse, drop your refreshing jumbo beer and perfectly salted jumbo pretzel. Once you manage to pay your dues and make it out alive with your plastic cafeteria tray, take down a large glug of beer, followed by an huge bite of pretzel and another glug of beer. Trust me, you'll feel a lot better because that s*** was stressful. And then take another swig of beer after realizing just how much you spent on the food and beer precariously balanced on that plastic tray of yours. Overall the food and beer is decent, plus it's nice to sit outside on a sunny day. Perhaps try this spot once (if you're the adventurous sort) or skip it entirely if you're like me and sprout a new gray hair for every stressful situation encountered. Or maybe you'll get lucky and it won't be crowded during your visit.

Yelp
The "Restaurant am Chinesischen Turm" is always worth a visit. It's beautifully situated in the middle of the "Englische Garten" has excellent food and very competent and friendly staff. After your meal go for a stroll in the park or listen to some typical Bavarian Blasmusik. Definitely 5 stars.
google avatar

Morgan H.

Yelp
This Biergarten should be on your must-visit list while in Munich. It is accessible from the edge of the Englisher Garden. We took a 5 minute bus ride from the closest S-bahn station. There are tons of communal tables, and plenty of beer stands. There is a small buffet-style food area where you can load up your plate with meat, potatoes, sweets and beer to your hearts content. Be sure to try the pan-fried German potatoes, Bratkartoffeln. Those were the highlight of my meal. We sat outside here for a few hours indulging in the hearty food and beers larger than our heads while listening to the live band play from inside the Chinese Tower. After your meal, take a 5 minute stroll over to the lovely Isar river.
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
An awesome place to spend an afternoon! Conveniently located in one of the world's largest inner-city parks, this is a good change of pace on a sunny day from the traditional beer halls. Instead of being served here, you wait in a log assembly style line, and grab your beer first. As you make your way down the line you can grab a good variety of salads, soups, meats, and breads. You pay at a cashier and grab a seat at any of the numerous tables in the shade or sun. The reason I knocked it one star might be picky, but it is because I heard way too much English being spoken out here. I'm not sure if there was a large tour group when I went, but it kinda ruined the German drinking experience. But then again, if that is my biggest complaint, things could be worse!
google avatar

Luca D.

Yelp
I'm only reviewing the Biergarten here. Definitely one of the most iconic in Munich, with the Chinese Tower in the background and the orchestra playing Bavarian hits. A bit touristy but what the h*ll... it's always great there.
google avatar

Leah M.

Yelp
Note: This review is for the Restaurant am Chinesischen Turm, not the beer garden. Just above the packed beer garden is a quieter, classier and pricier restaurant that serves a combo of both time-honoured traditional Bavarian fare as well as more modern and international dishes. The vibe is a mix between a Parisian brasserie and a traditional beer garden (interesting, but great combo!) The ambience was perfect on the terrace, which overlooks the Chinese Tower. Touristy albeit, but perfect for a visitor to the city. Service was prompt and friendly, with multiple waiters taking care of each table. We had the käsespätzle and crispy roast pork and dumplings. Both were excellent, the pork insanely tender and flavourful; portion sizes perfect for the price (and not overwhelming like some of these beer gardens can be). Dessert was the highlight. They have a series of mini-desserts outlined on well-done little French menus, each 2.50, each amazing. My favourite was a coconut panna cotta done with passion fruit and pineapple. All round, excellent! Go for a stroll along the river afterwards and enjoy the park!
google avatar

Fer G.

Yelp
First time in München and some friends told me about this Biergarten. It was raining and we can't seat quickly, anyway we enjoyed the great food in a great ambient.
google avatar

Yelp
What a great spot to stop and have a bite and maybe a drink or three... Friendly staff, many speak English, will help you sort out what to do. On a sunny day the place is packed with locals and tourists, all of them having a good time, laughing, singing, playing. And eating and drinking! Take a moment, and enjoy!
google avatar

Kat K.

Yelp
I'm not sure if you would call the Chinese Pagoda Pavilion a restaurant - but I am reviewing the more casual spot of the Biergarten - and it is pretty much a picture perfect way to pass a warm sunny afternoon basking in a sun filled and strategically shaded area with decent food and drink. This place is located right in the middle of English Garden, and it is about a 10-15 easy wander from the edges of the park, where you can ramble pass the single surfing spot in Munich and pass the Japanese Tea Pavillion in the south end. I wouldn't worry too much about seating since there is a whopping 6000 seats open to you on communal picnic benches and tables. You can BYOF to eat, rather than shelling out for food at the food stalls set out on the outer edges of the pavilion. The beer here is on rotation by most of the major beer producers here in Munich. Because the tables are communal, your best bet is to see if there is enough spots for your party and plunk yourself down. You will be sitting elbow to elbow with other people, but I think it one of the best ways to soak up such a chillaxed atmosphere and soak in the Oompah band that usually performs inside the pagoda. You can't enter the pagoda 2nd floor, but the band is usually loud enough to hear them from anywhere in the open seating area.

Yelp
This would be an awesome place to go with a group of friends. i was visiting Munich alone on business and still had a great time here. Started off by getting a big pork shank, plate of fried potatoes, and a 1/2 liter of Hofbrauhaus beer for like 15 euros. Huge portion of food and tasty. Stuck around for another couple of beers. Remember to return the little green token with your glass/stein to get your 1 Euro deposit back. It's a touristy place but nice. Tons of tables under the trees, nice gardens, cool Chinese temple. 1st level of temple is packed with patrons. German brass band playing on the 2nd level. Made some American friends there and people in general seemed in good spirits. Overall it's a cool place to visit in Munich.

Marcus C.

Yelp
Great time and great food and beers in the English Garden. This solace is special and would highly recommend providing you love schnitzel and potatoes. Warm weather also helps!
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
In true German style I, ahem, indulged in some drinking here last night, thanks to my boyfriend's affinity for those giant, giant glass mugs of beer. I think we had 6 of them. I can't believe that. Remember to turn in your glasses to get your euros back! It's not super cheap or anything like that, but the food and drinks come in huge serving sizes and then you get to sit in an atmosphere of indulgent drinking all around! Into our 3rd and 4th beer mugs, we suddenly discovered that the people around us were awesome, and we made friends and they got really drunk with us too! All my best dreams of Germany come true!
google avatar

Chaz D.

Yelp
Awesome food and atmosphere - and an oompah band to boot. The food was great, the beer was cold, and the people were friendly. We really enjoyed the schwienhaxe and the hendel - worth a walk over if you're staying at the Munich Park Hilton and don't want to pay €25.00 for a sandwich.
google avatar

Courtney M.

Yelp
My husband and I visited the Englischer Garden and ate near the Chinese Tower. We shared the potatoes/wurst plate, garden salad, large pretzel, and beer. The food was mediocre, but we REALLY loved the atmosphere. The picnic benches that are set up around the Chinese tower fill up entirely on a normal evening. The prices were reasonable, food variety good, and conversation flowing. Definitely a must see when visiting Munich! Dogs welcome.

Yelp
Christmas Markets are the best thing about December in Munich. Period. I like this one quite a lot, mostly because getting there involves a walk through the English Garden -- one of my favorite things to do in Munich all year round. The food choices and Gluhwein (warm spiced wine) are not as extensive at this one, so maybe plan to stop by here when you're not particularly hungry. Just get the sweet roasted almonds to hold you over. what I noticed about this one -- subject to the disclaimer that I am not a mom myself -- is it seems a little more kid-focused than many of the other Christmas markets. if my nieces (ages 6 - 12) were here, I'd take them to this one for sure. They could ride in a horse-drawn carriage (I think it's 2.50€ per kid, 3€ for adults) and they could work on their German at the Grandma's storytelling hut and at the Grandpa's toy-making hut [i think that's what was going on there!] Depending on the time/day, it also can get a little crowded.

Phil D.

Yelp
My favorite biergarten of the trip, located right in the .Englischer Garten and marking the border of the Chinesischer Tum. The amount of tables is massive, and the selection in terms of food is the best you'll get for any beer garten. Tons of pretzels, schnitzel, pork knuckle, and of course beer on beer. Star off because food wasn't all too phenomenal, but the beer at $8 a liter is alright. What makes this place is the area, as you can really just enjoy the spacious lot set aside in the middle of the park, and knock back some brews while waiting down the sunset. Usually bands play from inside the Chinesischer Tum, and after a long day biking through the gartens nothing says bike and booze like this place. Because you know you're in a good biergarten when you've drunkenly walked to China...
google avatar

Caitlin M.

Yelp
If you've already been to Hofbräuhaus München, which is the most popular and touristy beer garden in Munich, I'd definitely recommend checking out Chinesischen Turm. There's a much cheaper self-servce cafeteria style option to grab your food and beer from various booths which Hofbräuhaus doesn't offer. There's plenty of traditional German food to try such as fried pork knuckles, bratwursts, ribs, etc. Like others mentioned, the ambiance is pretty magical. It's such a beautiful and fun environment with live music, pretty lights, and plenty of communal tables to meet locals and other people from around the world.

Yelp
Busy Biergarten in a highly-trafficked section of the Englischer Garten. You come here because of the crowds, not in spite of them. The beer they serve - Hofbräu - is, in my opinion, second only to Augustiner among the Munich Big Six. Prices are good (7.20 + deposit), atmosphere is festive, and sunny and shady spots are plentiful. As I write this a brass band plays from the Chinesischer Turm. Kitchy? Somewhat. But not unfun!

Yelp
Chinesischer Turm in the Englischer Garten is, without a doubt, a must for all--local or not. It is not so much about the food (the usual Bavarian cuisine and beers with its usual expensive prices) but more of the environment. A beautiful (yet ironic) Chinese-styled pagoda with the oompah band playing in the tower serves as a nice backdrop while one enjoys the beautiful weather, decent food, great company (be advised--this place get quite packed!), etc. Then afterwards, one can digest by strolling in the peaceful park. An overall pleasant biergarten experience!

Yelp
It's a bit of a walk for us to go here so we don't go as often as perhaps this fine establishment deserves, but we've never been disappointed. The food is good quality and varied (Steckerlfisch anyone?), the long lines drain faster than you would think, the brass musicians in the tower play on, and the toilets are good. We don't have small kids anymore but the location in a ginormous park would make it easy to keep them entertained. There may be more interesting Biergartens but this one is a sure thing; unless you really have a better idea, this is a good place to go when the weather is nice. And don't forget to get your Pfand back.

Yelp
Food was just ok. The people clearing the trays and the deposit return folks have a scam they're running where they keep your deposit by clearing the tray. Stay clear of this place, it's a huge tourist trap and they take advantage of them.
