I had a pleasant, 4 night stay at Chisun Grand Nagano. Room 915 was spacious and clean. Everyone at Reception was courteous and helpful. The massage chair inside the room was very useful after a long day of sightseeing. The hotel is a 6 minute walk from Nagano Station, and if you have too many luggage, there are plenty of taxis just outside the station to take you. It cost me 700 yen for the ride to the hotel. I would definitely stay at this hotel again on my next trip to Nagano.
The only thing that I would change would be to stay in a room that you can open the window so that fresh air can come in. The hotel would save in heating costs because it would not be necessary to turn on the air conditioner if the window can be opened to let the cool air in.
Three places that I highly recommend while staying here: One is restaurant SOUSAKU 28 for tempura, buckwheat noodles (order in 3 or 5 bunches), and the fried chicken. I did not have a chance to try their grilled duck. The chefs here are at another level. From all the food that comes out of the kitchen, it is evident that the chefs are very well trained.
The second one is YAYOIZA restaurant which is just outside of Zenkoji Temple. They steam beef and vegetables in a bamboo tray. Delicious.
The third place is BENIBENI for apple pie. Inside these puff pastries are custard and cubed apples. This shop is at the entrance of Zenkoji Temple. You can take a nice stroll around the temple grounds where you can hear monks chanting and see newlywed couples taking their wedding photos.
