8 Amazing Walking Safaris Around the World for Adventurous Travelers

"Established in the early 1970s to save the greater one-horned rhinoceros, this park has seen population recovery from under 200 animals to more than 600 through concerted conservation efforts, and now offers reliable opportunities to search for rhinos and other wildlife via jeep, canoe, boat or foot, often guided by experienced rangers." - Paul Rubio Paul Rubio Paul Rubio is an award-winning travel journalist and photographer, who covers luxury travel, eco-travel, loyalty programs, and more. 10 Mistakes to Avoid on a Safari, According to Experts

"On a first safari drive in 2017 I learned the hard way that bright clothing can be a liability — my white ExOfficio BugsAway Damselfly jacket was singled out as too conspicuous — and that neutral, earth-toned layers that blend into the bush are far more practical. Travel here may require medical preparation (some travelers take malaria prophylaxis), insect repellent, sunscreen and sturdy layers for crisp mornings and dusty roads. Wildlife viewing is best at dawn and dusk, sightings are never guaranteed because these are wild animals, and guests should follow guides' instructions, balance photographing with being present, and expect to get dirty while fumbling with binoculars and cameras if unprepared." - Rachel Chang Rachel Chang Rachel Chang is a travel and pop culture journalist who contributes to Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Lonely Planet, and more. Here’s what you need to know about Nepal’s popular destinations - SilverKris

"A wildlife reserve home to elephants, rhinoceros and, seasonally, tigers; it was minimally affected by the earthquakes, so wildlife viewing and safari activities have continued largely as before." - SilverKris

Great dense jungle with Sal trees and vast grasslands with grasses more than 10 ft tall. We enjoyed 4 hours jeep safari in the early morning jungle in November. It was cold and misty and we loved the environment. We viewed rhinos, elephants (tamed), crocodiles, peacocks, monkeys, deers . Couldn't see tigers or sloth bear though. It was said that March is the ideal time for bear visibility and tigers are visible to the lucky tourists, which we were not. Loved the jungle ambience. Chill and quiet and mystic. Rs.2200 INR for 4 hours half day. One has to cross Rapti river on boat, walk about 100 metres and then ride the Safari vehicle. We were lucky to see a rhino which came out from the jungle and moved to the other side. We could see it in deep fog but my efforts to photograph it failed due to dense fog. Anyways, seeing is believing. Highly recommended, full day, if permitted.

A dense forest national park with amazing wildlife sightings. We spotted one-horned rhinos, elephants, peacocks, monkeys, three kinds of deer, birds and crocs. We visited on a jeep jungle safari arranged through our hotel, which was well organized. Truly a memorable experience and a must-visit for nature and wildlife lovers. We will surely revisit, but in the summer when there is a higher chance of spotting tigers. We visited the croc breeding center. We also did the canoe ride on the Rapti River which was so relaxing, we spotted lots of birds and a ghariyal.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 Chitwan National Park is where nature quietly shows off. The moment you enter the jungle, you’re surrounded by tall grasslands, ancient sal trees, and a soundtrack of birds you’ve never heard before. The safari is the highlight—seeing one-horned rhinos in the wild, grazing peacefully just a few meters away, is unforgettable. If you’re lucky, you might catch a crocodile sunbathing by the river or even spot a shy deer slipping through the bushes. The Rapti River at sunset is pure magic. Boats move slowly across the water, the sky turns orange, and everything feels calm. Local guides know the area well and share stories about the animals, the forest, and the history of the park, which makes the experience much richer. The nearby Tharu villages add a cultural layer to the visit. Their traditional houses, food, and evening dance performances feel authentic, not touristy. Whether you’re into photography, wildlife, or just want a break from city life, Chitwan National Park gives you space to breathe and reconnect with nature. An experience worth repeating.

Spent two days in Chitwan National Park, one in the park proper, and one in the buffer zone, and really enjoyed seeing the wildlife teaming in the area. It can get congested at times due to the narrower roads and you can end up waiting at times if one truck wants to stare at a turtle for 20 minutes (this happened).

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chitwan National Park represents one of South Asia’s finest examples of subtropical biodiversity conservation. The park protects a wide range of ecosystems—sal forests, floodplains, wetlands, and grasslands—supporting hundreds of animal and plant species. Chitwan plays a vital role in conserving endangered wildlife, especially the one-horned rhinoceros and Bengal tiger. Guided safaris and nature walks help visitors understand the importance of conservation while experiencing Nepal’s wilderness responsibly.

Chitwan National Park is an amazing destination to experience Nepal’s wildlife and natural beauty. The park is huge, with well-managed buffer zones that add to its charm. We stayed at a resort nearby, making it easy to explore. We went on a jeep safari — a great way to see the park, but there are many other options too, like canoe rides and jungle walks.

A beautiful taste of the jungle. Keep safari was disappointing however the canoe ride absolutely made up for this. Guides are professional. I wouldn’t recommend staying for more than a few days, once you’ve seen the local culture and experienced the safaris I would move onto your next destination. Plenty of options on the main high street to eat and drink. Worth a stop, but wouldn’t make this the focal point of your trip as I personally believe Nepal has more to offer!

Chitwan National Park is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave. The natural beauty is breathtaking, the lush greenery, wildlife all around, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes you slow down and truly enjoy the moment. Watching the sunset from the bank of the Rapti River was magical, with the sky reflecting on the water in the most stunning colors. I also had the chance to meet some wonderful local people, whose warmth and hospitality made the experience even more special. Ending the day with the Tharu cultural dance was the perfect touch: joyful, vibrant, and a beautiful way to connect with the local traditions. It was more than just a trip; it felt like a meaningful experience that I’ll always cherish.
