10 Best Coffee Shops in Madrid | Condé Nast Traveler

"Despite the fusty décor and gruff waitstaff, Chocolat serves some of the city's most heavenly chocolate con churros, which stand out for their high-quality dipping chocolate and non-greasy churros that are always served hot. The unapologetically spartan menu hinges on hot beverages (coffee, tea, or hot chocolate) and your dunker of choice: Either churros, slender and crunchy and piped into a teardrop shape according to Madrid custom, or porras, their heftier and spongier brethren snipped into long batons. This is where to go for an afternoon break of coffee and fried dough." - Benjamin Kemper

If churros is what you want, go somewhere else. No one will come take your order, use the QR code on the napkin holder. We were there first thing in the morning and the churros were cold and stale. The place is very nice inside and there are other pastries and drinks you can order.

If you’re in Madrid, Chocolat Madrid is an absolute must-visit! The food here is simply amazing — fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. I had the classic combination of fried egg, crispy potatoes, and jamón, and it was absolutely delicious. The toast was perfectly crunchy, and everything was served with a warm and authentic touch. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly, making the whole experience even better. You can really feel the welcoming vibe from the moment you step in. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a true taste of Madrid with great service!

Google
We came here twice on our recent trip to Madrid. The staff are friendly, and the interior is clean and comfortable. The quality of the churros and porras is phenomenal. They came out fresh (hot and crispy on the outside), and were not overly greasy as some fried food can be. The melted chocolate was consistently rich and smooth, not too sugary -- perfect for dipping, and they give you quite a bit. The drinks are really good too, and you can mix in any left over chocolate into the drinks for added depth. My favorite place for churros con chocolate in Madrid!

Google
Chocolat Madrid is an amazing spot for churros in Madrid. Both the thin and thick churros are great! Crispy exterior, soft interior and not very oily either. The chocolate to dip is rich and not watered down. FYI, you have to place your order online and they will bring food out to you. Even though they are staffed, they will not take orders at the counter.

Google
We went around 11.00 and found a table luckily. There were reserved tables they are not letting us sit by the way. Melted Chocolate sauce is really tasting nice here and churros are not very olily. Also it is a in a very local neighborhood in Anton Martin where you can see many shops near by this chocolate place.

Google
If you're looking for Chocolate & Churros in Madrid, this is the place. We visited for breakfast and / or lunch every day of our stay in Madrid. My family loved it, and I was in heaven. Everything on the menu is amazing, but the highlights for me were the chocolate and churros and orange juice. The breakfast food surprised me! It was so delicious as well. I dream about this place every night! Make sure to get the orange juice!!!! The owner was such a gentleman.. I appreciate the memories he helped me build!

Google
Chocolate Madrid is a great spot to enjoy Chocolate con and a variety of other chocolate flavors. The ambiance is pleasant, though fairly typical. It’s a nice place to sit, relax, and chat while indulging in rich, flavorful chocolate treats.

Google
Purro is the thicker churro, which I usually prefer, but the ones I’ve had in Madrid haven’t been as light and fluffy as the ones I tried in Seville. We stopped at two different places—both were clean, and the staff was friendly—but the texture just didn’t compare. Maybe it’s just a regional difference, but overall they were still enjoyable, just not quite what I was hoping for. Orange juice was fresh and delicious.

Yelp
Great small place to have churros and coffee. First time trying porras which is basically a larger churros with more of a fluffy inside.
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
First time traveling to Madrid, it was in all the YouTube channels to try. I picked this place because it looked cute. I am not big chocolate person but willing to try it. The thinner churros was crispy and crunchy. It is .50 euro per piece. Chocolate sauce is about 3.40 euro. It was not sweet but way too much chocolate for me. It was good quality. The thicker churro is more oily but absorbed the chocolate more. I like the thicker one reminder me Chinese donut. I wish I have condense milk. Service was good. It is small place, not many tables.

Yelp
Fresh orange juice, yummy churro et chocolate variety of breakfast sandwiches and plates

Yelp
A nice place to have a sweet pastry after your late afternoon lunch in Madrid. Every region has their traditional sweet treat. Like Waffles and Chocolate in Brussels or Beignets in New Orleans or Elephant ears at a county fair in the US, the Churros and Porras from Chocolat Madrid gives you a pleasurable guilty, not-so-guilty supply of sweet indulgence. There was a continuous stream of people coming in to enjoy this place. We had the Churros with chocolate and I had a Bombom coffee. The chocolate dipping sauce was like a bery thick, rich cup of hot chocolate. Compared to Churros in the US, these were less sugar focused. There was no added sugar on the pastry and the chocolate offered a nice, but not too sweet addition. The Bombom coffee is a style that has a thick, sweetened condensed milk combined with espresso. It was all very delicious.

Yelp
Saw this place on YouTube with Mark Wiens and James from Madrid. This place was luckily just a few mins down from our hotel! It's a small place and super cute. Super affordable churros and chocolate. Service was also great. They had a big group of students when we were there, and they tried their best to accommodate everyone. Owner was also super friendly! As for the churros and chocolate, definitely delicious and I recommend trying while in Madrid. He made them fresh when we ordered! There shouldn't be any wait for the most part. Great place to try when you're in this part of town and great to support a small business!!

Rose M.

Yelp
Ask for Alfonso the owner. He wanted Madrid to keep the old tradition of churros (porras). The hot chocolate is very rich!! Not sweet at all! A must stop, during the cold Madrid nights.

Yelp
Went here on a food tour and immediately knew I needed to go back. It is a perfect spot away from the crowded tourist churros or porras spots in Madrid. Come here for excellent porras and chocolate. I didn't have the churros, but I am sure they are excellent. The orange juice is excellent like so many places in Spain because it is fresh squeezed. I am ruined after spending a summer in Spain and came back to the US where you cannot get fresh squeezed orange juice anywhere!
google avatar

Illyasha P.

Yelp
If you love great food and chocolate, this is the place for you. The freshly squeezed orange juice is second to none. Friendly service as well, but there may be a wait.

Mary O.

Yelp
Best churros and chocolate in Madrid. Go to the popular place then go here for the real deal. Lovely side street and divine chocolate.

Yelp
This post is way overdue, but I'd be amiss not to give them 5 stars. Better late than never right? One of our favorite churro places in Madrid, we go a few times a year... the staff is so friendly, the churros are so cute and heart-shaped... plus it's not greasy. They come with a dipping chocolate that's pretty good, it's supposed to be on the thicker side because it's meant for dipping. It's also NOT supposed to be super sweet so don't expect that, and you'll definitely enjoy it. They only serve it hot in the mornings, if that's something that you'd want... Can't wait to come back here soon one day!

Myla R.

Yelp
Great churros and hot chocolate - was super fresh , was so hot we had to wait for it to cool off! Was our first Spanish churro experience and set the bar for what we look for .

Gelica H.

Yelp
The batter of the churros was delicious, the drinking chocolate was just right but they serve the churros and poras at room temperature. There were times posted for fresh hot churros available which I missed by 45 minutes. That may be the reason of room temperature churros we had but at least have a warm buffet table with a hot lamp to keep it warm? I've been to other places where they fried the churros for you to order. Otherwise, the place is clean with some tables indoors and nice service. Try to go when they make them fresh

Yelp
I appreciate many of the reviews are positive. We came here for the "famous" Chocolate con Churros. We also ordered Capuchino and Especial de la casa sandwich. Not sure it's because we came mid-afternoon...but churros were Very disappointing- cold not fresh and quite bland. Chocolate was hot and thick. I would say to get your churros in the morning or definitely ask if they're fresh or just made! Coffee was also bad. Frankly the tasty highlight was the sandwich: warm butter toast with fried egg, ham bacon and gooey cheese freshly made. Bit of a touristy place not authentic and mediocre quality.
google avatar

Yelp
Really awesome churros con chocolate. We arrived late in the morning and the place was semi empty. We were seated promptly, the server was super kind (fernando) and super patient with the kiddos. We had tried churros in other places including Barcelona, valencia, y Murcia. And i liked this spot the best. The kids also loved the chocolate here. They let us try the porras and they were delicious as well. Overall great experience for the whole family.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
It was okay, but I think most chocolate and churros here seem the same. This was made with powder, and I know that bothers some people. The service was easy and nice, and the place wasn't crowded, which I can't say for the other chocolate places.
google avatar

Yelp
By far our favorite spot for churros in Madrid. Granted, we only tried three spots, but this one came in first place. Even over the most famous, touristy one. Chocolat is right on the corner from our apartment. How convenient! The girl that served us both times was so friendly and welcoming. We ordered both churros & porras with chocolate. The chocolate is traditionally thick, but it was very tasty. When we were done with our churros, our server added milk to our chocolate so that we could drink it. Then she brought out a tray of cookies and offered us a couple, on the house. When we return to Madrid, we will be staying in the same apartment and I seriously hope that Chocolat is still there!

Vivian G.

Yelp
This is the place for churros and chocolate! They have the cutest pots for chocolate and really good brunch food selections overall (we got the sandwich with the egg in the middle and it was super delicious) Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Madrid is known for their churros with chocolate dip for breakfast. This place is just one of the establishments that Madrid has to offer. The chocolate was delicious. The breakfast was yummy, freshly squeezed orange juice and to top it off, I ordered Irish coffee (with whiskey, of course). The atmosphere was casual and relaxed. Good customer service. Even received a bonus once I checked-in on Yelp, which i saved for another visit before I leave.

Yelp
Yum!! We got the mixed order of 2 purros and 2 or 3 (can't remember now!) churros with the chocolate sauce for 4 euros. I had never had purros before but liked them better than the churros. They are bigger and fluffier, similar to a Chinese you tiao. I liked that the chocolate sauce was not overly sweet, but felt that the ratio was off and that there was way too much chocolate sauce or not enough purros/churros. Though I think that's pretty standard and know that people drink the sauce (!!). We also got a smoked salmon toast- perfectly fine but nothing to write home about. This place is very close to the Prado and didn't seem overrun with tourists when we were there.

R G.

Yelp
Do not leave Madrid without getting the porras with chocolate. If I lived in Madrid, I would have breakfast there every day. Coffee is excellent. Outstanding value.
google avatar

Graciela C.

Yelp
Sigh. Chocolate for breakfast. It's a thing. This one was nice and dark, so rich and purely chocolaty. But the churros were missing something. They weren't fresh straight out of the fryer. And that's a miss. It did not blow my mind. €4.60 too pricy for what I got but that's Europe. Service was a bit inattentive, they seem to care little for tourists. Place is very small, not for my group of 6. I don't think I would go out of my way to get their chocolate & churros again.
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
YUM!: this is my kind of breakfast. I've never been a "breakfast person", but if I had one of these places literally next door to my hotel (SmartRentals Atocha), it would be a different story. One of the biggest regrets of my 2017 trip is that I didn't eat it every day. AND it's open early, which is a bonus, because Madrid is sleepy and quiet until closer to 9am. This is a real find and highly recommended!
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little place in our neighborhood. The owners were really nice and still served us hot fresh churros even though they were closing. We got two orders of churros con chocolate and it was seriously the best ones I've had in either Madrid or Barcelona. The churros were so well made I ate some pieces by themselves. The chocolate was decadent and thick, super luscious! Price for two? Less than 8e - win!
google avatar

Rob W.

Yelp
Cute spot to stop and try the Madrilenian tradition of churros and chocolate. Churros were nice and hot (we lucked out, though they post a schedule as to when Churros will be hot, which seems like a nice touch) and the chocolate was so good, I was considering just spooning it from the cup into my mouth. Thought that was a little crazy til I saw the old guy next to us doing just that. Cappuccino and espresso were a bit disappointing, but everything else was great.

Alexandria Q.

Yelp
Got some churros and coffee! Came from the states and wanted to try the hype. Cute cafe place on the corner of the street with great staff members. Bathroom available in the back. Also fresh OJ I wanted to try but didn't have time for. Only a few euros for the churros and like 6-7€ total for what I got which is great.
google avatar

mei s.

Yelp
We came in less than a half hour before closing. Maybe that explains the cold churros? The chocolate here was more like just melted chocolate not like the pudding consistency we've had elsewhere. The drinks were fine. The chocolate cake was not very good. Dry and then with a plop of the chocolate on top.
google avatar

Anita C.

Yelp
So great! You must do this in Spain! Churros dipped in thick hot chocolate! We didn't go there for the fresh churros, so try to go there on the schedule if you can! It is still good.
google avatar

Diana L.

Yelp
Came here instead of the very famous chocolateria San gines. The churros was not hot and the chocolate was thick (not sweet. Almost like a chocolate pudding or hot chocolate). I could see why people come here for the churro and chocolate but personally not the best they could've done. I sort of wish the chocolate was sweeter and more chocolatey! Overall: 3.5 / 5
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
Chocolat was just ok for me. It's a small coffee bar type place. They have coffee, pastries and alcohol on the shelf, but I couldn't find any of those drinks on the menu. A nice chocolate martini would have been perfect. I didn't care for the churros, they were a little too crispy and overdone for me. The chocolate is good and you get a giant cup of it. The young man working is why I gave 3 stars. He was helpful, friendly, and conversed with us while he worked.

Tina S.

Yelp
This place is amazing! Churros and chocolate is so much better than San Gines. Very attentive servers and the owner is always there the way a business should be run. Loved it.
google avatar

Lora Y.

Yelp
We got churros and chocolate to take out to eat at the park. We came in the afternoon around 2-3 PM and there weren't a lot of people at that time. The chocolate tasted good but the churros were cold. They were still good but not as good and crunchy as the fresh ones we tasted later during our trip.
google avatar

Chan P.

Yelp
Soooo good. Freshly churros and the chocolate was perfect. We like it so much we came back several times. Arrive during the schedule to get freshly made churros
google avatar

Katie H.

Yelp
These are the churros you've always dreamed of. So light, crispy, and perfectly fried. We had our first churro experience here, and it was so good that we chose to come here for our last breakfast in Spain. The churros here are the real deal, and you can get a cup of thick, rich chocolate to dip them in as well if you want to do it properly (and let's face it, if you turn down a bowl of melted chocolate sauce, I don't think we can be friends). The purros, which are a bigger thicker churro that they offer, are also delicious. I actually liked them more than the churros since they had fluffier innards. We also got toasts with ham, and they were wonderful and generous with their ham. This place was packed with locals, and if you come during the regular breakfast time, you'll be lucky to get a table. It's the kind of place that I wish I could transport to my own neighborhood so I too can wander down the street on a Sunday morning and enjoy some freshly fried churros. Also of note, our server the first time was a young guy from South America who was so welcoming and friendly. He spoke very good English, and we just loved him. Make this the place you try churros in Spain! You won't regret it.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Located in a quieter neighborhood close to the Prado this place is find. The chocolate here is as good or better then the more famous places for churros con chocolate. They also have lots of other things made with chocolate and fresh squeezed orange juice.... Chocolat does a quick business with the locals, but I saw no other tourists there. The waiter chatted in Spanish to everyone who came in and gave everyone a cookie while they waited. When not busy with customers the waiters were busy preparing for later, cleaning, one waiter was singing as he worked, Note: this is not a tourist place and staff does not speak English but be adventurous and try your Spanish here, It's not that hard to say churros con chocolate,, If you can make it come, for good food, to see non tourist Madrid, and the singing waiter,
google avatar

Bridget B.

Yelp
Excellent churros, thick and traditional thin dipped in hot chocolate that should be illegal it is so good. Cappuccino with whipped cream topped with sugar and sinamon was incredible as well.
google avatar

Tal V.

Yelp
Churros were bomb! We also had the spanish egg omelette with potatoes as we were so hungry. Everything was good, just really small place.
google avatar

Trish N.

Yelp
If you only get to try 1 place in Madrid for chocolate con churros...go to San Gines, hehe. (Only b/c it's 100+ yrs old, super famous, and people will gawk if you say you didn't go there.) But if you have time to go 2...MAKE SURE you hit Chocolat!! And if you have time for 3...go back to Chocolat a second time (we did)!! Their chocolate is soooo magically smooth & rich...it's sinfully decadent, not too sweet or watered down. Best of all, it goes perfectly with the freshly-made churros turned out--to order!--by their friendly & helpful staff. Also love the cute, cozy interior with surprisingly hip & modern lounge music...somehow it just works. I wasn't as big a fan of the porras, but I probably wouldn't like them in general (not just here)...it's a personal choice. For me, it's gotta be that delicate crunch & perfect chocolate-to-pastry ratio that can only be achieved with a fresh basket of churros (con chocolate). Make sure you go before 1pm, or after 5pm, to get them freshly-made...if you go during the slow period (1-5pm), you will have to settle for pre-made churros, which are ok but not nearly as exciting. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Madrid!! PS: The tosta was ok, and orange juice was ok...most people who ordered drinks here seemed to get (some variation of) coffee, so I'd recommend that, if you're a coffee drinker.
google avatar

Jo S.

Yelp
The churros and hot chocolate is heavenly!!! Our first time in Spain. This is a definite place to go and have hit chocolate. It's amazing. Fun area too.
google avatar

April S.

Yelp
Cute little caffe with some English speaking staff. Some seating inside, and quick service. The churro/chocolate dip is pretty inexpensive and delicious, with a cappuccino on the side!
google avatar

Rebecca K.

Yelp
As an alternative to Chocolatería San Ginés and its hoardes of tourists, I decided to try to Chocolat and was very impressed. Our group of three ordered churros with a "porra" of chocolate to share, and it was more than enough for us. Although the churros weren't as light as some I have had in the past, they were still very good. The chocolate, however, was the most rich and delicious of any that I have tried in Spain.
google avatar

S A.

Yelp
Great churros, amazing customer service and delicious chocolate. Churros come with no sugar and cinnamon like you are used too but the salty churro and dark chocolate makes up for it. We had the chocolate capricho which comes with whipped cream... A little advice: eat the whipped cream and dip your churro in a that, drink the rest, have a shot of tequila and find your way home happy! It's located not too far about 3 minutes from Anton Martin metro station, the customer service is spectacular and they speak English.
google avatar

Andre C.

Yelp
The best churros con chocolate in town. My wife and I happened to walk by on our last day in Madrid and we were glad we found it so late. Had we eaten there earlier it would have made the other places, like San Gines, seem worse than they were. We will definitely come back the next time we are in Madrid. The big difference for us was the thickness of the chocolate. In many places it is thin and runny but here it was thick. Almost like a pudding. And delicious.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
Very good churros y chocolate. Also very reasonably priced. It also opened earlier than many other breakfast places in the area. We would have tried more food if we had more time. I would recommend
google avatar

Vince V.

Yelp
This is 3 blocks from the Prado museum, and I found it through Yelp by just putting in the search term "Churros". The narrow streets leading to it make for a picturesque walk. Oh, and the churros were so good, but I needed a siesta afterwards...
google avatar

Cameo W.

Yelp
We were here three years ago for our honeymoon and had to visit it again on our first night in Madrid. Good coffees and the chocolate churros are pretty good. The chocolate is super warm and really rich. We've had to get a second order of churros each time to be able to finish it. Highly recommend this place if you're near.
google avatar

Izzat A.

Yelp
Thought this place was just okay. Ordered churros con chocolat and thought they were overhyped. As other have mentioned, the churros were cold and not sweet at all. The chocolate was just okay, nothing special. Service was mediocre - they seemed like they didn't want to be there and just weren't very friendly. Just a very mediocre experience. We won't be back.
google avatar

Henna H.

Yelp
When we visited Spain I was on the hunt to try churros con chocolate at as many places as possible and this was one place that I really enjoyed! It was a cold winter night and the atmosphere was warm, friendly and cozy. The churros were warm and crispy, the chocolate was thick, dark, and not overly sweet. I only wish they gave us more churros so we could soak up every last bit of chocolate!
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this place - it's in a charming neighborhood and has a unique vintage diner feel. We had churros with chocolate and some herbal tea for breakfast and it was a bit disappointing. The churros were clearly not fresh, and tasted like they were probably made at least the day before, the chocolate was good, and the tea was ok. We liked the overall feel of this place - relaxed diner atmosphere, but the food fell short...
google avatar

Sudeep B.

Yelp
Found this place by accident and it turned out to be one of the best breakfast places in all of Madrid - as a matter of fact we saw tourist guides bringing groups in for experiencing breakfast at this place! We ordered the special which was churros and chocolate and it was amazing - the Spanish omelette was delicious! Must visit!

T. T.

Yelp
We ordered the churros con chocolate here. The churros themselves were just okay--nice and crisp, but cold and not particularly flavorful--but the dipping chocolate was SUBLIME! Definitely well worth the visit, I don't think I've ever had such tasty chocolate.
