Mexico is well-known for chocolate, with the same pronunciation in Spanish. Mayordomo is one of the largest and best known brands and there are at least 8 locations in central Oaxaca. You cannot make a trip to Mexico without sampling, or rather experiencing chocolate.
Each store has a busy retain counter where one can buy boxes of chocolate. There are two major types of chocolate and it is mostly in terms of how much cinnamon and proportions are in it. Regardless of detail, it is all good.
There will be an eating area inside and a chocolate preparation operation going on where you can watch them mix and grind the chocolate. You can sit and simply have a cup of hot or cold chocolate, done with milk or water or a meal to eat with your chocolate. The meals are basic and good, so not complicated. Menus are in English is you look terrible confused or simple ask.
Prices are very reasonable. The cost for a serving of chocolate is about 15 pesos. The exchange rate has been in the high teens to a Us dollar, so that is around the price. We have experienced exchange rates of 22 pesos = $1 and as high as 13 pesos - $1. If you do the math, you are paying around one dollar for a serving of the best chocolate you will ever have.
I will mention that Mexicans are among the most hospitable and courteous peoples of the world. Being gracious and helpful are cultural strengths, making visits to the country pleasant experiences.
The chocolate comes to your table in a pitcher with a staff person or waitress frothing the brew with a wooden mallet-looking device which swirls and blends your concoction and pours it into cups. It is soooo good and rich that you realize that you do not need food...in fact, the chocolate IS food. That said, you might, just might get a piece of bread or roll to sop it up.
We bring back boxes of chocolate as gifts. Like little bricks, these boxes fit nicely into your check-in bags.
Enjoy. A great way to rest your touring tired legs and feet. And there are bathrooms inside, also.
