San Miguel de Allende Travel Guide

"A popular churro shop long associated with actor Margarita Gralia; locals and visitors often line up for three varieties: a classic style dusted with cinnamon sugar, a version made with condensed milk, and a chocolate-drenched iteration — try one or all three." - Travel + Leisure Editors

San Agustín serves good churros. The place is so popular that you’ll likely have to wait quite a while, but the atmosphere is lovely and cosy, definitely worth the visit.

Nicole

Google
The best churros I’ve had in my life. It was so addicting and just overall delicious. A lot of churros I’ve had before just feel too oily and I don’t go beyond 1 piece but this one, no. I could have had more pieces if I didn’t just come from a big meal. It was really that good. We also had an iced latte and iced chocolate and they had different options for the chocolate but we for the iced one, I think this is the only option. It was the French chocolate one and it was also delicious. Perfectly refreshing and perfectly paired with the churro. I would go back to SMDA just for this alone.

Google
Well it definitely lived up to it's reputation as the best churros in SMA! I had a sencillo and a stuffed one with cajeta. It was really delicious and I highly recommend this place. Just keep in mind, they only take cash, no cards.

Google
The place is very beautiful and cozy—perfect for a rainy night in San Miguel de Allende. The churros were delicious, and there is a wide variety of drinks and food options available on site. My only downside is that they don’t accept credit cards, which feels a bit outdated for 2025. They really should implement a card payment system. Other than that, everything was impeccable. I understand weekends can get very busy and chaotic due to the large crowds, but we had no problems visiting on a weekday and really enjoyed ourselves.

Google
Fresh made churros and hot chocolate is hard to beat! This place is small and popular so it feels kinda rushed in and out and so everything is a little sticky as well. Honestly this place would be really helped by a quick service counter/window.

Google
The food was ok but the churros were sooooo good. Old school vibes too and CASH ONLY! Staff was friendly, and very fast with the orders. Can’t stress enough how nice the place looked too. Walkable from our hotel and cozy too.

Google
Get there early. If you don't wanna stand online for a long time. The lines can go down the building, but we got there early in the morning. Since we saw the line late at night, the churros are delicious, and you can get them filled with different creams or plain. We had them playing with hot chocolate, and dipped them in and they were exquisite.

Google
Exceptional experience! The churros and chocolate were absolutely fantastic – perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, paired with rich chocolate. We also enjoyed the club sandwiches, which were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. A highlight of our visit was meeting the owner, Margarita Gralia. She is incredibly classy and welcoming, making us feel right at home with her warm hospitality. Her passion for the restaurant is evident in every detail. Overall, it was a delightful visit, and I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for delicious food and a charming atmosphere. Can't wait to return!

Yelp
Fantastic! We loved the hot chocolate and the churros both! My husband actually ordered a frozen hot chocolate that was delicious! There was a bit of a line about 8pm on a Sunday but it moved fast!
google avatar

Virginia O.

Yelp
The most delicious churros I've had in a long time! Service is good and the food so good! The place is small and quaint! Love the vibe!

Yelp
Best churros in San Miguel! Don't get discouraged by the line it moves quickly. You must try their cajeta stuffed churro. Wow!!!!
google avatar

Shirley C.

Yelp
The churros were very good, better than some of the popular churro places in Mexico City. The latte was bland, but the hot chocolates were so flavorful. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I couldn't miss being at @sanmigueldeallende.mx a stop to tried chocolate and some good churros at @churros.sanagustin , to be honest, they are special! Toasted on the outside and soft and creamy on the inside, they also have hot chocolate and different types of breakfasts and coffee. A most stop for breakfast or snack.

Yelp
Old school looking charming restaurant famous for their churros. We decided to go with the package of a Spanish hot chocolate with 3 simple churros for $75 pesos and l, about $5 USD. The churros were nice and crispy but the hot chocolate was extremely delicious. They only do cash so plan accordingly. Service was slow once we seated so we decided to order to go instead.
google avatar

Sonia F.

Yelp
Long line, churros were delicious. Service was great. I will definitely be back to try the breakfast.
google avatar

Marisol R.

Yelp
Super busy but they move the lines quickly. We came just for the chocolate, coffee and churros. I spent quite a bit of time in Spain and around Mexico so I have had my fill of churros! Churros from spain are next level and the chocolate dipping 'sauce' is much thicker than San Agustin, which is more akin to hot chocolate. While it's tasty, the churros I had at Luna rooftop locally I liked better. We also tried the Rumpope and the Nutella. Go for those! Go for the specialty ones if you stop in. Enjoy!

Ariana R.

Yelp
We heard this was the best place for churros and they were okay. I wouldn't wait in line again If you're ordering to go, only 1 person is allowed inside at a time to pay and grab the order.
google avatar

Sabrina M.

Yelp
Oh yes! This place is worth the wait! Usually there is a line, we had the strawberry filled, hazelnut filled and plain! All amazing! They make a mean cappuccino here! Just a heads up No CREdIT cards, cash only!!!!
google avatar

AngieLee G.

Yelp
Eh, I've had better churros of a food stand off the street. These are all premade and we're cold. The establishment was so hot. The restaurant is Tight and crowded and a little loud . The service was good there are other menu options that we didn't try.
google avatar

Darlene Y.

Yelp
I couldn't be bothered to get a table for churros. I ended up getting 3 pieces for takeaway. Probably one of the best churros I had. They also fill it with syrups; I had strawberry, caramel, and chocolate. ENJOY! I wouldn't bother waiting in line to get a table. Just get it for takeaway and eat it at a nearby park bench.

Yelp
All the locals say San Agustin https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/san-agust%C3%ADn-chocolates-y-churros-san-miguel-de-allende?select=GSFT2xS0R_KWflkhsvBIkw is the best place to come for Coffee, Hot Chocolate and Churros, no need to twist my arm let's go check this place out, they also serve food. Small place that's nicely decorated and friendly staff.... https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/san-agust%C3%ADn-chocolates-y-churros-san-miguel-de-allende?select=Hy7OKxch6WpV00NY_3WtBQ https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/san-agust%C3%ADn-chocolates-y-churros-san-miguel-de-allende?select=GAY3dUAnUVA2_NlHna0kxA Coffee https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/san-agust%C3%ADn-chocolates-y-churros-san-miguel-de-allende?select=4KluV6Mgj0KPH7B0VSY9JQ Hot Chocolate https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/san-agust%C3%ADn-chocolates-y-churros-san-miguel-de-allende?select=yBb6egocah16DAu2lB3kHw Churro https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/san-agust%C3%ADn-chocolates-y-churros-san-miguel-de-allende?select=ZWMOSMPZGUsULWOqrMDsWg Churro, Chocolate filled https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/san-agust%C3%ADn-chocolates-y-churros-san-miguel-de-allende?select=wMLTHs0hhIRN8qQfKxr7aA While I've had better Churros off the street, they were warm, tasted good, the Coffee was ok nothing special and the Hot Chocolate was the best thing I tried.

Yelp
Fresh, delicious churros and hot chocolate. It's a pretty small place with a line out the door, but they work hard to keep it moving quickly. Also fun to watch them making the churros through the window. Definitely recommend! Oh, and if you're vegan, the hot chocolate with water is still so delicious! Love the Nutella churro.
google avatar

Alissa Y.

Yelp
Worth the wait. Came for Día de Los Muertos and saw that there was always a line. We ordered the Mexican chocolate churros & they were delicious. Also enjoyed the mole and it was sweeter than I was used to, but good for breakfast. It's a small restaurant, but service is pretty quick.
google avatar

J.D. J.

Yelp
This place was so amazing, we came back the next night. We didn't try any of the food, only desserts, but they were delicious. The best churros I have ever had!
google avatar

Jen T.

Yelp
The churros were okay, but not amazing. It was the texture--they were chewier than I was hoping for. That, and the sauces that each of the churros were "stuffed" with tasted like thin syrups. My friend did order the Mexican hot chocolate and said it was delicious, so perhaps try that! There was a line when we showed up, but it moved pretty quickly.
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
The line is worth it! Outstanding churrros and chocolate and I was surprised with all the different options for both the churros and chocolate. We opted for traditional on both and loved every minute of it. I was told to go around 2/3 and followed those directions. Needed up not stuck in a crazy long line like I saw earlier.
google avatar

Esther V.

Yelp
The chocolate and churros were amazingly delicious, wish I could take some back home! Our breakfast was very filling and tasty. Great service and ambience. Overall a must when in SMA
google avatar

Lee E.

Yelp
I thought this place was pretty cool. I'm a long time vegan and I never eat sweet treats, let along garbage treats, but this place was really good. I came here because I had a craving for churros while in MX, and was curious if they made them with eggs. Apparently they don't have eggs, so I went for it. The churros are good but in my humble opinion, the Mexican hot chocolate was WAY better, and that's what I'm going to be dreaming about tonight. Nice pairing though.
google avatar

Juan T.

Yelp
Great food and great service. Salmon with mango sauce was delicious. Shrimp burrito was good.

Constance G.

Yelp
Delicious! Was visiting San Miguel for a wedding and had these about three nights. Cajeta filled churros were my fav!
google avatar

Amy W.

Yelp
Solid 5 stars!!! The texture, size and the flavour of the churros are so tasty. Not too sweet, just right!! You can get it plain or stuffed with the sweet sauce. Both tasted amazing! The chocolate have a nice touch of cinnamon to it and it wasn't too heavy on the chocolate side. One of the best hot chocolate that I've had. It was a wonderful experience. After trying out these churros, I don't like the ones from Toronto anymore!

Sandie B.

Yelp
The chocolate agua is awesome. They only have regular milk so that was the dairy-free option. The Nutella churro was quite good, but served kind of cold.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
The wait to sit down and eat inside was around 20 people deep. They have very few seats inside and there isn't air conditioning. It was extremely warm inside and less then pleasant. My girlfriend comes often for a to go order so she walked right in and we placed our order. There was no line, we paid and moved to the next counter. We handed over our slip and waited for our order. The wait for the order was just a few minutes. We walked out with drinking temperature hot chocolate. A bit bitter as it's dark chocolate. Perfect Mexican Hot Chocolate. The churro was fresh, room temperature, and bit harder then expected. All In all I got my churro in Mexico.
google avatar

Brittany W.

Yelp
These churros are delicious! Three was not enough for me....I ordered more! These churros are made fresh, light, and the perfect amount of sweetness. I ordered the Mexicano chocolate and it was also good--thick, chocolatey and sweet with a hint of cinnamon. This place can be busy so be prepared to wait for a table or if you don't want to wait, order to go so you don't have to miss out!
google avatar

Victoria J.

Yelp
This place is right across the street from the centro. We ordered empanadas de picadillo, burger, caldo de tortilla and steak tampiqueña. The empanadas were delicious! The burger was stacked with meat, the soup is just that...soup with tortilla strips, pieces of cheese and avacado. Not like other tortilla soups I've had (from texas). The churros were delicious, not greasy at all.
google avatar

Matthew S.

Yelp
A night treat that is a must when in San Miguel. Delightful churros and fine spiked coffees! Yum. Yes, there will be s line, figure out which line is to go and which is for here
google avatar

Teofila R.

Yelp
Churros and more churros Seems like that is the main sweet with hot chocolate and whipped cream!! Nice sugar rush after walking the park. Churros are good with fillings of your choice. Hot chocolatier is smooth and hot. I ask to sit at the bar and didn't have to wait in line!
google avatar

Vanessa M.

Yelp
Couldn't get enough of the Nutella churros and hot chocolate during my stay in San Miguel de Allende. It's located around the corner from the main plaza perfect for a date night dessert. Cute restaurant and great service. While you wait to be seated, sit in the park across the street in front of one of San Miguel's beautiful churches.

Quinn O.

Yelp
Wow. Chocolate and Nutella churros are incredible. The Mexican hot chocolate really good as well. What a treat. All the hype IS warranted
google avatar

Ari L.

Yelp
Had the regular (without filling) and one with cajeta. Delicious. What I would go back for is their chocolate en agua (hot chocolate made with water I read of milk). Not too sweet or thick. The only issue I had with the churros is that they make them and when they give them to you, they choose the ones that have been there the longest as opposed to the fresh ones so they're a bit on the chewy side. Next time, I'll ask for the freshest ones.
google avatar

Veronica G.

Yelp
Not only were all employees friendly, but I honestly have to say the food was delicious. The Churros and Mexican Hot chocolate are to die for. The owner Margarita Gralia (actress) was here and it was an awesome experience as she was very attentive.
google avatar

Liliana M.

Yelp
Long wait for a cold churro. This place does not beat the guy standing in the corner waiting to fry you up a nice hot churro.
google avatar

Roldan S.

Yelp
Amazing place to come for breakfast or just for coffee and churros, they offer many varieties of hot chocolates and churros. They have normal churros or filled with chocolate ones which they are amazing! There breakfast are crazy delicious ! If you are in town don't hesitate to come here !
google avatar

Danny V.

Yelp
Super surprised by the quality of our churro, or should I say the lack of quality of the churro. It was cold, filled with what tastes like Hershey's syrup -also cold, and feel like I would rather walk down the street and get them fresh from the guy cranking them out right in front of you.
google avatar

Perry S.

Yelp
Get here mid morning to avoid Walterboro in line. You'll be treated to the best hot chocolate you've ever had. The Mexican chocolate comes with 3 piping hot fresh churros, a deep-fried log of dough rolled in sugar. Delicious!

Yunea C.

Yelp
Zero stars if I could. We RSVP two hours ahead for a table that was only available before they closed. Our churros and our hot chocolates came out cold. We where not satisfied, mostly after all 5 of us getting very sick to our stomachs that night. It ruined the rest of our vacation. Never again

Martha C.

Yelp
google avatar

Cynthia A.

Yelp
Great churros! Try the one with cajeta. There was a long line to get churros. The locals know. The filled churros were 25 pesos (a little over a dollar) and the simple ones were 7 pesos. Churros are made fresh to order. We will definitely return. The crowded with cajeta and pecans were also good. Only buy what you will eat for that day. They don't taste good the next day.
google avatar

Larry H.

Yelp
Second visit...a much better experience! Churros we're excellent! Service was attentive. Will definitely return next time :-)
google avatar

Vanessa B.

Yelp
Once you arrive, there are two lines. On the left (facing the restaurant) is the line for to-go orders. On the right is the line for a table. The line for to-go orders moves relatively fast and there's a small window where you can watch the churros being made. Unfortunately, I never got to sit inside because it was always so busy! However, I did order delicious nutella churros to go each night I was in San Miguel. If you want to sit and enjoy your treat, but are unable to get a table, right across the street is a beautiful church with benches all around for you to enjoy your churros.
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
Just go. Where else can you get fresh made churros (you can watch them being made) sprinkled with cinnamon, drizzled with chocolate and put in a cup with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and mini M&Ms, for 89 pesos (about $4.50). Delicious. Try going on a quiet weeknight, apparently some nights the line gets really long to get a table.
google avatar

R M.

Yelp
Meh, can't say they are the beat churros I've ever had. Over cooked and under sugared. I wouldn't bother.
google avatar

Salvador P.

Yelp
Please do not waste your time going here. Inroad the reviews and these were not good, still I decided to give it a try...... well that is what I get for not listening
google avatar

Melissa N.

Yelp
Worth the wait time, but it's usually pretty fast! This place is a MUST, the tostadas are SO good.. service was excellent. Quesadillas and molletes were good, also the salsas, obviously the churros are the best, with Nutella are so good! Also the regular ones, chocolate "marmoleado" was DELICIOUS, "chocolate frío" was ok, but the hot ones are WAY better.

Iris G.

Yelp
Best churros and chocolate! Omg k recommend the rompope churros!!! I couldn't get enough of it. We went back 3 times during our stay. Totally worth it
google avatar

Nettie A.

Yelp
I had no idea this place was owned by a famous actress. Several friends told me to come for the hot chocolate and churros but when I arrived, there was a lot of attention to a woman in the restaurant that looked like the same woman in several photos plastered all over the walls. I guess my claim to fame is getting told to enter the other door because it is during the 2020 Covid 19 Pandemic . Like others, they take the temperature and spray down shoes lightly, I didn't understand where to enter so the owner Margarita Gralia oversaw the process. She was very nice and when I bumped my hot chocolate and spilled it, she had them bring another one. That being said, the employees seemed a bit nervous around her. The hot chocolate was warm, not hot. I would have preferred it "mad caliente" or a little warner. They are being very careful with Covid 19 and even spray shoes. I care on a Wednesday at 12:30 and no line and only a few other guests. Service was ok but not that friendly and warm. Efficient though,
