Cholla Bay Oyster House

I SO wanted to like this place. I was doing some restaurant exploring as I have been doing lately in Rocky point. Call me a snob, but I have passed this place many times and would have never thought of going in (because of the area and the External aesthetics) until I read the reviews. I don’t know what those people were thinking giving a good mark. Again, please note I really really really wanted to like this place. I am not saying DON’T go to this place, but if you’re going there for food and not just atmosphere… Don’t go. The patio is fantastic overlooking the bay. First, when you walk in the main indoor dining room room smells like sewer. Like something is wrong. But if you go on the back patio, you won’t experience that. And the back patio is worth it. Second, I swear that the drinks are being watered down. I had to order extra shots for my drink and walked out of there not feeling much… But that’s just me and my own opinion just disregard that. The fact that they have word “oyster“ in their name is a misnomer. The oysters were tiny and had tons and tons of spitable shell in them. I know I was in Mexico, I am not an oyster snob, but oyster should not be in the name of this place. They still tasted good. But…meh. I had a shrimp ceviche which was good with a big old avocado and they gave many hot sauces. I would eat that again. But then halfway through my meal I ordered some to go food for someone and I sat there for another, at least, 40 minutes. They didn’t even check in on me. When I asked if everything was OK, they said that they just had a rush and all these things came in at the same time. I was one of four tables in the entire restaurant. And just for what it’s worth, the bathroom does not have running water. Weird. If you’re looking for a good view for day drinking, check it out… And maybe the rest of the items on the menu are better than what I picked. But JJ‘s is a couple of doors down and you get the same view and better service and drink. Again, I wanted to like this place and I write this review reluctantly.

This is one of those restaurants that brings genuine joy. The food is top notch and extremely affordable and the location is stunning. The owners here are some of the kindest and most honest people. I left my purse here the other day and this man literally chased me down the street to give it back. If you are a seafood lover this place is a must try.

Amazing quality and quantity for the value! I live in Mexico, I'm not easily surprised by good prices, but the amount of oysters and mussels we got for the value was amazing. We got steak which was awesome, accompanied by a potato, we have ceviche, crab cakes among a few other menu selections which I forget. We had excellent drinks and the staff were very friendly. It was nice and hidden away too. I highly recommend. Leave the resort hell of the hotel zone where most food is trash and come here instead!

We had so much fun here! They had live music and they sang popular songs from the 80's and 90's. We even got up and danced a few times. It was right on the beach, so we had a fantastic view. The food was really good although service was OK. She didn't keep tab off how many bottles of water we ordered and we had a big party, and she asked us how many we ordered. We ordered so many throughout that we didn't know for sure. That's something they should keep track of. She didn't come to the table very often but she was friendly. However, just be aware that the road to get there is really long and terrible! It's a dirt road with tons of ruts. I'm guessing that's what you call them. They're like smaller speed bumps every foot. We felt like all the tires were gonna go flat and the windows shatter driving on this road in our minivan. It's a great place but driver beware.

Kids loved eating right on the beach. Food was great, service was a little slow.

The oysters were incredible! And the service was great. My only complaint was the band that was playing was really loud. It felt like I was at a concert and couldn’t have conversations with my friends at the table. The band was good, but too loud.

Nothing had flavor. The shrimp and fish tostada's were not bueno. The order of fish tacos had a green salsa felt old. The location was great and the view was about the best thing out of every.

By far, one of my favorite places we ate at we went three times while we were out there, the ceviche and avocados delicious that was my favorite

I had the Rib eye I ordered it Medium next time Ill order Medium Rare the cut is thin so medium rare would have been perfect it cane with veggies and Mashed Potatoes Delicious!! I could order just the veggies they were so good. Cant wait to come back and try something else id highly recommend this place

Great service! They have done a nice job of improving (lots) on the original setup / seating. If you like raw oyster, clams and stuff people say great things! The fried stuff was overly breaded to me. And if you order a salad get the dressing on the side... I will go back!

Cool little spot in Cholla Bay with a great view of the bay. The outside seating under the shady palapa is the perfect place to enjoy a margarita & oysters or clams (we usually get both). They have the typical seafood menu, ceviche, American shrimp cocktail, shrimp Alfredo, garlic fish or shrimp ... etc, they also have a pizza & ice cream .. there is something for everyone including margaritas & cold beer. Super friendly staff, family run business. Sundays they have football on the tvs. Check the tide chart, when the tide is low there's no view of the water but perfect place to walk before or after your meal. When the tide is in, it's such a great view. I'd recommend a visit on your next trip to Rocky Point.

This is a hidden Gem in Peñasco. I have been coming out here for years and I just recently tried it. The Oysters are perfect! Salty and fresh. The coconut shrimp are off the hook!! The drinks are delicious. This spot is Mexican approved for sure!

This place is the bomb diggity!!! The steamed clams were massive and good! I can't wait to go back!

Had a wonderful dinner overlooking the water at sunset. Everyone enjoyed a different entree and all was delicious. I had the coconut shrimp. And a friend who is a regular joined us and had his usual, the Alfredo. Service was terrific - very friendly and attentive.

Hands down the best seafood in Rocky Point! I can't believe we found this hidden gem that offers outside seating with amazing views. The food came out hot and fresh. The service was absolutely amazing. We were the only ones there and they took very good care of us. Now, back to the food. I ordered they oysters as an appetizer and my friend ordered the clams. We had no clue that the serving size was going to be ginormous.. Lol. Our eyes lit up with excitement as we dove right into those clams. And then my seafood tower came out and I almost fainted. There was so much food!! I was in seafood heaven you guys. Moving forward, this will be our first stop when we get to Rocky Point. They now have a super loyal customer for life.

Food, service and ambiance. This place has it all. On the water in Cholla Bay. Menus and prices in English and Spanish. JJ's Cantina is just down the street, but food here is so much better.

You must come here if you like seafood and amazing views. The food was incredible. The location and views are amazing.

GO IN THE WINTER and if you want an incredible sunset to watch while you're chillin beachfront, you're in the right place :)

Amazing service & food! We got the seafood tower & we added lobster to it. I like how everything is fresh. The service was spectacular, they were all so friendly and took care of us. Beautiful view as well:)

I happened upon this place by accident, while driving around Rocky Point. Ordered the fried oysters, fresh oysters, coconut shrimp & bbq chicken. All were AMAZING! No fancy place settings, just great food at great prices! I regret not taking photos ‍

Delicious food, great service, casual setting overlooking the bay. Sit outside on the patio, get some peel and eat shrimp, have a little slice of Rocky Point heaven!

I have to say that I was so surprised to find such a lovely Restaurant in Choya bay. The view is awesome and the ambiance is divine. Such a cute little nook with lots of character. Owner is super friendly. My wife had the chicken Alfredo which was prepared fresh. I know this because I am a culinary snob. Lol. I had the seafood linguini which was a generous portion and the fresh French baguette was very fresh. Top notch food and impeccable service. My go to place for fresh seafood. FYI..The oysters on the half shell are to die for.

Had high expectations for this joint. First off, if you call yourself an oyster house... then you better have oysters! But, they were out of oysters! Ok, strike 1. Next, they didn't have any chips ready to serve with salsa in the middle of dinner service. Strike 2. And, finally, food just wasn't good! We got fish tacos, shrimp tacos, & seafood linguine. Fish tacos were really bland, shrimp tacos were alright, & the seafood linguine tasted like spaghetti-o's with clams on top. On top of this all, the servers weren't very attentive. You'd be better off having a meal elsewhere.

We went to the Oyster House because two days in a row, Friday included, there was a Facebook advertisement showing a Fish and Chips special on Fridays, $10, the picture looked good, so we thought we would try it. When we arrived, yesterday, Friday evening, we were told they had no fish. I asked about the fact that the ad was on Facebook that very day. We ended up ordering two orders of crab cakes. We received one order, and the crab cakes were literally cold. They were sent back to the kitchen and they finally brought two orders, both of which were cold, not just lukewarm, cold in the middle. We said we didn't want the second order after all, and the second attempt at bringing us a hot meal was also a failure. We ended up finishing our drinks and leaving. The bartender was super nice, gave is a free liqueur each and said he hoped we would try their place again. Also we were not charged for the meal, as it was inedible. Bottom line, we will not go back. Too many errors, false advertising on the fish and chips, horrible taste to the crab cakes. The drinks were okay, just okay.

The next day I came down with montezuma's revenge. I suspect it was from the ice cubes in my water from this place. Make sure you ask for a "bottle" of water.

Friendly service, cool location, and the food was fabulous! We ordered so much food because we couldn't decide what to get. Now, we in general are not huge oyster fans, but we did order some anyway. Everything else was amazing. (I'm sure oyster fans would think the oysters are amazing -- the definitely give HUGE portions!)

Loved this place since the first time I stopped by in rocky point! Just had to come here with my girlfriend to show her! The pasta I had was decent, I don't expect crazy good pastas in Mexico. I had the shrimp bisque as well and that was top notch. But my favorite thing I had while I was there were the crab cakes! Damn crab cakes I wish this place was around the corner from me I would be a regular! Also has a really nice view specially at sundown!

Good seafood and great location! We went exploring and cholla bay and loved sitting out on the deck here!

The food and service was amazing!! The staff went above and beyond and helped accommodate all of my dietary restrictions! Perfect for a lunch on the beach!

been going to another spot, but the low tides have oysters out of ocean for hours n dont trust it much.. here cholla bay, they dont have that problem.. very fresh.. great customer service. Combo Platter, Clams n Muscles, huge could feed 4 people easily.. 10 bucks.. Fresh Oysters.. Best Shrimp Cocktail in RP so far.. Bloody Mary bar was A bonus... FYI.. google maps shows correct location, 1/4 mile or so east of JJs cantina.. yelp map is wrong

No. Just no. The calamari is hollow, dry and really over fried. Terrible. My friend was trying to impress me with the crab cakes but it was more like deviled crab than anything else. The cook was nice enough to show us the squid. It's actually bait. Not what you would use for actual calamari. Come on Sonoran Sea. You have giant squid!!!! Go get some.

We visited cholla Bay oyster house a few days ago while in RP and it was great. Super reasonable prices and extremely nice and prompt service. I just ordered a dozen oysters and a couple beers but they were perfect. The views are amazing and you just feel like you're at your family member's house because everyone is so chill. It is the perfect spot to visit that's a little off the grid but not too far. The road from the sandy beach resorts is 99% dirt but I drove it in my little Jetta and it was totally fine. I would prefer to drive a truck but i didn't have a choice lol. Anyway.. keep up the great work Guys, I'll definitely be back!

A true local gathering place. Tip: Watch the tide line along the shore parking area! This bar and oysteria is a great value with fresh catch items and relaxing sea side views. Grabbed lunch here today and plan to have one more meal before we leave town tomorrow!

If you're ever in Rocky Point, Mexico you have to stop at Cholla Bay Oyster House. I went there with my best friend. This place had amazingly good seafood and very, very friendly staff. We had an incredible experience and our taste buds were not disappointed. We started off with Oysters that were clean and delicious. The shrimp Bisque was so creamy and loaded with shrimp, it was amazing. The garlic shrimp did not disappoint. It was a good serving for one at a great price. We highly recommend Cholla Bay Oyster Bar!!!

10/29/23 I revisited Cholla Bay in Puerto Penasco on Friday night. My wife and I explored past Wrecked at the Reef and just followed the dirt road. We were faced with "Cholla Bay Oyster House" in the middle of the neighborhood at an "Alto" sign. We advanced into the downstairs dining area and found an incredibly beautiful outdoor dining area on a perch just above the Bay on a fulll moon night but it was quiet so we explored upstairs to the Cantina. It was full of people my mature age and they were all happy and focused on the Diamondbacks WS game. It did not take long before John, the owner, introduced himself and welcomed us with nice real conversation then a complementary bowl of clams which were well sized, harvested locally and great. John is a warm conversational and real guy. We'd already ordered a dozen oysters also local and also good for 12$ US. Then we ordered a $14 order of 40 clams and mussels which was within a delicious broth. Everybody was happy. Seems to be a trend amongst Americans spending a lot of time in Mexico. Warm environment and good value which I would highly recommend - Cholla Bay Oyster House, Avenida Alamar, 83550 Bahia la Choya, Sonora. Number is 638-382-5443. We arrived around 12:40 and sat for over 25 min before anyone came to take our order. Our food didn't arrive until close to 2:00. We only ordered ceviche, oysters and mussels. Two of the three dishes literally just need to be plated! They need more staff bc the 1 one waiter and two kitchen staff obviously isn't cutting it. The waiter was apologetic but lunch comes every day at the same time. Staff up! The food was good and the view was pretty but I didn't want to spend a half day waiting for a small lunch. I would recommend you try it but at off times or expect to be there for a very long time

The food here is hands down delish! It was also a great atmosphere with yummy drinks and a cozy feel.

If you get out to Cholla Bay this is a go to for certain. Fresh oysters and shrimp from the sea? Are you serious? Good prices and a great meal.

Loved this place, food was really great! Had the roasted oysters with spinach, so fresh and delicious! Crabcakes were meaty and tasty, 3 nice sized ones to an order. The clam chowder, so fresh and filled with lots of chopped clams, not your typical potato dominant variety. The standout dish for both of us was the coconut shrimp!! OMG, hugh, 5 to the order with French fries, the best we've ever tasted, not greasy, big and meaty and lots of coconut crunch, the mango chipotle dipping sauce was fantastic! Oh and we sat upstairs in the new bar restaurant overlooking Cholla Bay, Jesus our server was excellent! Well worth the ride to this destination if you are staying in Puerto Peñasco.

Honestly regret spending my time here. I've had such amazing food during my stay in puerto Penasco that this just really let me down. I had the seafood linguini which was just spaghetti noodles in some sopa de fideo kind of sauce. The muscles on top were tiny, they didn't give me the shrimp, and the clams were underwhelming.Although the staff were kind, they were seriously under staffed. I had to ask for the chips and salsa before it was given to me halfway through dinner. They let the stray dogs in the patio area and they would come up to us asking for food. They didn't bring me napkins until half way through my linguini, and didn't offer any sort of condiments, salt, or pepper. They also didn't have any oysters when we went.

Excellent! Nice view of the bay. Had a great oyster dish - baked with butter & fennel. Very good seafood linguini with muscles, clams & shrimp. Nice bar.

Exciting seafood and adequate drink/wine/beer selection attentively served inside, on the patio or rooftop on Cholla Bay. This is the best cuisine Cholla Bay has to offer. The Shrimp tacos are prepared with grilled shrimp, and this is a rare and tasty upgrade from pan seared shrimp served elsewhere. However, the oyster and clam selections set the Oyster House apart. These are available fresh, or made in a southwest style clam chowder and other dishes. The ceviche is excellent. Even the Bruschetta is a worthwhile choice. More complex dishes include a seafood cocktail and a cioppino. Upscale but casual beach setting with a catamaran on the patio. Located on the main road in Cholla Bay. Only open Thurs-Fri evenings and Sat - Sun for lunch and evenings.

This place is truly a gem. The oysters are fantastic and very inexpensive at $8 a dozen. The steamed clams were the best I've had in years. Chowder is delicious, garlic fish was moist and wonderful. The view of Cholla Bay is inspiring. I highly recommend this wonderful restaurant and I will eat there every time I'm back in Rocky Point.

Great little gem in La Choya, service is fair to great, it does slow down when they get really busy. Garlic fish and shrimp are good just ask for extra garlic. The fresh and cooked oysters are so fresh and tasty. Every trip to Puerto Penasco will include a trip there. They have a nice selection of beer and wine they even have Pacifico. We just love the decor, the music is great, The Oyster House has a great vibe and laid back atmosphere.

Very disorganized staff. Some food came late. Some drinks never came. Food was ok but nothing great. Oysters were not cleaned well (full of sand and grit). Clam chowder was ok but more runny/watered down than it should have been.

Excellent food !!!!! Key lime pie is delicious!!! Amazing view would definitely come again

Beautiful and much needed in Cholla. My favorite is their clam chowder but we also love the ceviche tostadas.
