Everyone loves a free lunch!
I received a notice on Facebook yesterday about this new Chop't location opening up this week. They promotion read "Help us train our team and stop by Thursday April 12 for FREE FOOD - 11:30am to 1:30pm or until the food runs out." Since it's a few blocks from where I work I figured I would get there early so not to miss out on a free meal.
Walked up around noon today and the line was ridiculous already! Seems like everyone enjoys a free meal. I was pretty impressed though. They had the line moving at a brisk pace and within minutes I was inside. They were very organized and had a lot of staff on duty today. The guys preparing the salads were moving lightning fast and chopping everything up with precision. I was watching and waiting for a finger to show up in someone's salads with those blade choppers they use.
Concept is pretty simple here, but with a lot of variations and items on the menu to mix and match your salad with. It was a perfect choice for me as I am on a healthier diet kick lately and back on a solid training schedule. It's easy to eat lean and low calorie as there are many items to choose from - type of lettuce, up to four free toppings from veggies-beans- fruits-seeds-cheeses, etc, and a main protein that ranges from chicken-turkey-shrimp-bacon-ham-steak, etc. Of course it's really easy to go vegan/vegetarian here with egg whites and tofu on the list, or just stick with the greens. They also have an extensive list of dressings from the classics to exotics to bold to spa. The spa dressings are the low cal versions. Every item has a calorie count listed next to it so there is little guesswork involved.
The base price for the salad is $6.99 plus the cost of a protein and any additional items. I decided to keep it simple to try this out for the first time. Mesclun mix lettuce, broccoli, carrot, cucumber, tomato, and grilled chicken, along with spa sesame asian dressing. It was tasty enough and also came with a few slices of thin pita type bread. Normally this would have come out to about $10 but it was free today! I also ending up getting a fountain soda and was happy to see they have a selection of Boylan's to choose from. Diet root beer! Nice to see them supporting the local family owned companies like Boylans. I can't complain as this soft opening free meal saved me what would have been $12 including tax, which would have been a bit higher than what I normally spend on lunch in this area. Still, I will probably go back now and then to grab a salad or salad sandwich which are made with honey wheat flatbread.
The location itself is bright, and brand spanking new with a good amount of seating in the front half. Sea salt and pepper grinders on the tables add a nice touch. You can even sign up to like and follow them on Facebook and Twitter for news, events, new items, and occasional free food offers!
Glad I got there early because at 1:30 sharp they cut off the line for the free food. Saw a bunch of people come up right after that and were turned away. You snooze you lose!
