Chorotegas Surf School

Tenallo and the Chorotegas team are fantastic. They are positive, patient, skilled instructors. They love the ocean and its energy and they convey their enthusiasm to all their students. They provide individual and small group instruction and take the time to go over the videos with you when you’re done so you can improve for next time. My friend and I made the mistake of booking with another surf school for our first two days, and the difference was enormous. Once we were with Tenallo we knew we were in good hands. Tenallo even made a video for us with tips for next year, and we can’t wait to return. I’ve heard they are opening a 2nd location in Santa Teresa, and I’m sure it will be great too.

Chorutegas Surf School at Sendero Hotel and Villas is an excellent choice in Nosara especially if you want to learn (or improve) in a way that feels safe, supportive, and genuinely fun. The instructors are highly skilled and immediately make you feel comfortable in the water. They’re patient, encouraging, and really know what they’re doing, from reading the ocean conditions to giving clear, practical tips that actually help you progress. A special highlight is Johan. He’s an outstanding instructor fully dedicated to what he does, incredibly knowledgeable, and great at explaining technique in a calm, confident way. You can tell he’s truly passionate about surfing, and that passion carries into every lesson. He pays attention to the little details, adapts to your level, and makes sure you feel supported the whole time. If you’re staying at Sendero (or even if you’re nearby), Chorutegas is 100% worth it for the quality of instruction, the professionalism, and the overall warm vibe.

The best surf school for sure. Everything was smooth and easy. I had the great pleasure to surf with Johan and Justin, both incredible guys with such big hearts. I learned a lot during my week with daily lessons. Highly recommend.

It was the best decision to do our surf lesson and rent boards at chorotegas surf school. Not only was the equipment stellar but the highlight were the people working there. They really made the difference, being kindhearted and passionate about their graft and spreading these good vibes. All in all one can just conclude: “Muchas gracias et hasta la proxima! Pura Vida! :) “

Our family has taken lessons with Tanallo and Chorotegas for years. We were excited to be back in Nosara, but I wasn't sure I was going to like all the new things with the new hotel. We ended up loving it! The new surf shop is organized and flows well. The pipa Fria (cold coconut water) at the end of each lesson is a Stellar addition. Tanallo's instruction is still patient and informative, and he still helps me find great local coffee beans, takes our crew fishing at the river mouth!, and introduces us to great local restaurants. We brought friends with us, and everyone had successful experience with all of their surf instructors! Everyone was standing on the board by the end of their first day, and one newbie even made it outback on day 3. 10/10 recommend. Amazing experience! Justin and the rest of team took the time we needed and pushed my daughter to next level, it paid off!
