Christiansborg Palace

Definitely worth a visit. Beautiful palace with very unique tapestry. I really recommend the free tour at 3pm. When visiting check the website for opening hours of each section (stables are not open for very long) and if the palace is actually open as it is still in use so closed on some of the days. We spent a total of about 2.5hours there. Long queue to get up to the tower - this is actually free.

This "working palace" is still used by the Danish King for official functions, making the shots feel exceptionally authentic and "alive". Best Photo Spots for Your Upload: The Great Hall & Queen's Tapestries: The ultimate "hero shot." The 17 vibrant, modern tapestries designed by Bjørn Nørgaard tell 1,000 years of history and look incredible on camera against the grand architecture. The Royal Library : My personal favorite! It features stunning gold balconies and a "Beauty and the Beast" vibe that is perfect for Instagram. The Throne Room : An elegant oval room with the King and Queen's thrones. Capture the intricate wooden flooring made of oak, mahogany, and walnut. The Christiansborg Tower (Udsigten) : Don't skip this! It’s the highest point in Copenhagen (106m) and is free to access. The 360-degree panoramic views of the city’s copper roofs and the Stock Exchange building are unbeatable. The Royal Stables & Kitchen: For something different, head to the stables to photograph the majestic white horses and historical carriages, or the kitchen with its two tons of gleaming copperware.

The Royal Room area is very beautiful. It's good that the palace is still in use and that there are related views, because many palaces are now used museums. Copenhagen Card is valid. Visiting this section will take you 90 minutes.

Incredible palace. You can see how the royals live. The library is the most beautiful room. It's like a fairlytale. Don't miss to take the ticket which includes the royal kitchen and stables.

Fun little visit to another castle. Big halls, grand stairs, kitchen, big library and other neat things to sight see. Didn’t get to see the stables. Christiansborg Palace is actually pretty wild — it’s the only place in the world where the government, the prime minister, and the Supreme Court all work in the same building. And under it, there are literal castle ruins from like the 1100s that you can walk through. Plus, the Danish royal family still uses parts of it for fancy events, so it’s kind of like government offices + ancient history + royalty all stacked in one spot. Funny story. There’s this extremely long dining table (see pics). You’re not supposed to sit there but the tour guide said a family sat there to eat lunch one time. 🤣

The grand, grandeur and wonderful castle in the heart of Copenhagen. What a splendid way the castle is decorated and preserved and still active. Such display of wealth is dazzling. They have visuals and videos of the historical aspect of the castle. Interesting to go through them and better for kids to enhance their knowledge.

Visiting Christiansborg Palace was one of the highlights of my time in Copenhagen. The palace itself is a beautiful blend of history and functionality, serving as a working government building while also offering visitors a chance to explore royal reception rooms, historic halls, and underground ruins. Walking through the palace felt like stepping through layers of Danish history, where modern governance and royal tradition exist side by side. The climb to the top of the tower was absolutely worth it. The viewing platform offered one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the city. From above, I could see the colorful rooftops, winding canals, and the orderly beauty of Copenhagen stretching in every direction. The view was especially impressive because it felt peaceful and expansive, giving a sense of the city’s balance between tradition, water, and urban life. Christiansborg is a must-see for anyone who wants both rich history and a stunning perspective of Copenhagen from above. It is a perfect combination of cultural depth and unforgettable views.

Beautiful palace and well worth visiting. Lots of rooms were open to visitors and there was information in them all. Centrally located and entrance is included with the Copenhagen card.

We hadn't heard of the ruins, but were nearby and noticed entry was included with our tourist transportation cards. Why not check it out? (Gift shop at entrance/exit) Pretty cool place. Larger than I expected, lots of historical info along the route underground, an interesting, kinda creepy setting...albeit slightly claustrophobic. It didn't take long to tour, I'm estimating we were probably down there for 30-45 minutes maybe, granted although we wandered the entire path we didn't stop to read every display.

Definitely an interesting stop of the ruins under the Christiansborg Slot. Well presented and preserved with much history to view during the medieval era. You will explore the architecture as it evolves through the rendition and enlargement of the castle. You also see the soldiers defense systems. A good experience for history buffs. Free Wifi.

So the castle that stands today is the third rendition as the first two perished in fires. The oldest ruins under the castle date back to the 12th century and is a very evident ring wall that protected Bishop Absalon's castle. After being demolished, Copenhagen Castle was erected as a stronghold. The castle was rebuilt in 1369 by Christian IV and redone several times by the following successors. It was completely torn down and rebuilt by Christian VI in 1745. This was when the first evidence of the medieval ruins were discovered. This castle was not around long either, as a fire took it in 1794. The Christiansborg was built a second time in the early 1800's but did not fair much better as it was lost to fire in 1884. The current Christiansborg was designed in the neo-baroque style and the ruins made accessible to the public in 1924. If you learn anything from this, let it be that persistence (combined with modern heating alternatives) finally pays off! This was by far my favorite part of the castle that we toured as it was so unique to other castle tour experiences. The dimly lit rooms with the artifacts amidst the rubble makes you feel like you are being transported into another world. The informative placards tell the history as well as stories of the past. This combined with random little artifacts, including some little kitty paws imprinted in stone, make this a pretty neat experience This exhibit is also included with the Copenhagen Card if you happen to have one. If you are planning a trip to Christiansborg, I wouldn't want to miss the ruins!

This was our second stop of the attractions at Christiansborg Palace. And it was the one I was most excited about. I was not disappointed, the Christiansborg Ruins are flipping awesome!! The entrance is right next to the Reception Rooms entrance/exit so it is simple to find. Beyond that, I didn't know what to expect. The current castle is the fifth to stand on this site, so there is a lot of history to see and learn. Beneath the current palace are the ruins of previous buildings, excavated during renovations. It is all marvelously presented and restored, and a superb visual aid to help one learn the history of the previous palaces! And a great display of old architecture and defense styles. I don't want to give you a history lesson or talk your ear off about it all. You really should visit and experience it yourself. I liked the ruins better than the reception rooms! They are not what you normally have a chance to see when tourist-ing your way though some castles. And they keep a sense of humor! (Absalon's Secret....an unofficial toilet drain from way back when! But shh...it's a secret.) It is included with the Copenhagen Card, so if you have that for your visit make sure this makes it on to your list of places to visit. And if you don't have the card, you should still put it on your list of places to visit!
