My family and I go to Chudleigh's every year. It is tradition and I wouldn't miss it for the world - as in I got home at 3:30AM from a party and woke up at 8:30AM to make the trip. I believe Chudleigh's is becoming more popular as I now see their apple pies at Longo's. Actually, when we were driving up there and noticed a long line to enter, my mom mentioned that 20 years ago this was a hidden gem...one of those cute country places where you picked apples in someone's backyard just because they had an excess. Now, Chudleigh's has become a full fledged experience for the family with animal barns and tractor rides and playgrounds and mazes and pumpkin patches and there is even a golf course nearby. This is a great place to bring kids.
The farm opens at 10AM on Sundays, but as mentioned, the line was already extremely long. FYI! Try to come to Chudleigh's as early as possible. By the time we left (1-ish), the line to enter extended almost 4 big-country blocks back. The price to enter for 8 people came about to be $60 and change (different pricing for seniors, kids, and they also have a family pack price) and this allows access to the grounds.
We were here to pick some serious apples so you have a choice of riding a tractor which will bring you to all of the Apple Stops or you can choose to walk (it's not a long distance from the main pick-up station to all the apple rows).
FYI. Be sure to check the website for which apples are ready to pick. The weekend we went, we knew that Red Delicious, Creston, and Empire were available. The only issue I had was that the weekend we went (which wasn't the first weekend that the orchard opened), many of the trees were already picked by previous guests. Out of all the varieties, the Creston's were the ones that had a different price: $2/lb and you had to put them in a different plastic bag. There were only 3 rows of Creston's and most of the trees had been picked, but my mom and I managed to walk all the way to the other end of one row and we went nuts.
FYI. Chudleigh's offers small and large sized plastic bags so you don't have to bring any. My family chose to bring 2 carts to put the apples in, but red wagons are available to rent. To give you an idea of pricing, 5 big bags of apples came out to be $75.
Chudleigh's is also famous for their ready-made apple pies and apple ciders (mulled as well). My mom also likes their sausage rolls (which were all gone by 12pm with no more staff to make more) and little quiche pies. We ended up buying 5 apples pies, 2 1L ciders, and 3 boxes of mini quiche pies which all make perfect hostess and dinner gifts. This is also a great place to pick up food for any Thanksgiving dinner.
If you wanted to break for lunch, Chudleigh's has the BEST hot dogs and corn-on-the-cob ever. They are grilled over an open fire which gives it that lovely earthy taste and the hot dogs are so JUICY. We didn't get a chance to eat at Chudleigh's this time simply because the line was too long and we were with elderly people who couldn't wait any longer for lunch. However, if you do get a chance to eat here, DO!! You will not be disappointed. Plenty of seating area is available. There is another eating section where the baked goods and juice are (near the entrance), but that is more a coffee and soup place.
All in all, Chudleigh's is a GREAT place to come with family and friends and is so kid-friendly. But, at the core, the apples here are so delicious and fresh. I didn't even realize but I ate 7 apples while picking! In fact, I am having one now!
