Around the World in 14 Unique and Historic Ice-Cream Shops

"Just 45 miles north of Cheyenne, Wyoming, is the small town of Chugwater. It would be hard to guess that this town of roughly 200 was the headquarters of the Swan Land and Cattle Company, once one of the largest cattle and sheep ranching operations in the United States. In recent years, its notoriety comes from the Chugwater Chili Cookoff, an annual, competitive cookoff held every June. Perhaps the best-kept secret is that the town is also home to the oldest operating soda fountain in Wyoming. The soda fountain’s building can be traced back to 1914 and, in the time since, it’s housed a doctor’s office, pharmacy, diner, grocery store, veterinarian supply store, and liquor store. While you can still purchase food staples and souvenirs, the eatery is mostly a place to chug a soda or choose from their extensive milkshake selection. While you’re there, pony up to the bar and order some beef chili nachos seasoned with “Chugwater chili” while marveling at the eclectic decor." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
I have waited for this day to take a 3 hour one way trip to Chugwater to see the famous historically old soda fountain. Loved the building and atmosphere a bit of stepping back in time. The food was ok,maybe the fresh cut fries Did not match up to what I had vision. Service was not organized it was a bit of confusion, maybe have someone greet with a smile and hand out some menu's Let them know it maybe a moment. Maybe my next trip go for the delicious malts and fresh made soda drinks.

Cici R.

Google
Burger and fries were delicious!! Hubby ordered a malt and was very pleased! We had to wait a while because the place was packed!! Regardless, we will definitely be back!! The food was that good! Recommend stopping by if driving through.

Genevieve P.

Google
The fresh cut fries with green chili were amazing. Our kids loved the burgers and malts. Service and shake quality wasn't as good for our friends who arrived during a rush. Still, it's an oasis in the middle of a food desert and we'll go back each time we pass through.

Renee S.

Google
Beautiful little stop if you’re near Cheyenne!! The ice cream, shakes and sodas were fantastic! We had the grilled cheese and tomato bisque soup (SO good) and the Wyoming burger. The fries are thin but sooo good. And the ranch is amazing.

Google
Chug, Water, Soda Fountain has a fun vibe and a neat concept, but my experience was a little mixed. That said, if you’re seated at a table, you can see directly into the kitchen, and what I noticed was concerning. The cook had a phone sitting on the prep table, put chewing tobacco (or a Zyn) in his mouth, and then went back to making food without washing his hands. He also appeared to possibly have pink eye. On top of that, it took a while to get a server, even though the place wasn’t busy. I think with a stronger focus on cleanliness and attentiveness, this place could really shine. The concept is great I just hope management addresses these issues, because it has a lot of potential.

Google
Had the absolute best time! Came for one of their amazing dinners, and was treated with the kindest hospitality and awesome food. A cool cool spot!

Google
We had a terrible experience here. Our server completely ignored us for 20 minutes until we finally approached her ourselves. She told us she’d come to our table to take our order, but it took her another 10 minutes to show up. Once we ordered, the food took about 20 minutes to arrive — and they brought us the wrong order. What made it worse was that there were five staff members and only two occupied tables, yet our table was entirely neglected while the other table received all the attention. We won’t be stopping here again.

Elizabeth S.

Google
Do not pass Chugwater without stopping for Chugwater chili, burgers, and a real life soda fountain. Family run business with the nicest kids and the best service. They even make their own hard candy. Don’t leave without their chili powder mix to take home. The best food and quite the atmosphere.

Yelp
A gem in the middle of no where. We stopped in and had their chili and ice cream and's but were fantastic! The service was also outstanding and the waitress was friendly and helpful. If you like old Timey stores, this is the place!
google avatar

Yelp
Just love this little place in Chugwater, Wyoming. It is always our "stop" when driving from Colorado to Wyoming. The old fashioned soda fountain is the best and their shakes are soooooo delicious! They offer sandwiches, pies and other items. Be prepared that this is not fast food. Enjoy your time, browse the items for sale and pick up some famous Chugwater seasonings while you wait. Our chili was a little too dry and the BLT bacon was a little well done. Fries were perfect and homemade. The service was warm and friendly and everyone was eager to please.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
Took a little drive up to chugwater Wyoming stopped in at the soda fountain and had lunch and continued our drive back to Cheyenne took the back way it was a nice little drive got to enjoy old fashioned sodas. Vanilla creme Blood orange and Huckleberry. There burgers are delicious and the family that runs it very sweet people they just love out of towners
google avatar

Yelp
Nostalgic little soda shop in a town of 175 people. They make a real Malt, not pre packaged. I don't drink malts but my friend says they are the best he ever had. We were there for breakfast, the menu is limited but we both had the Chugwater chili breakfast burrito. I had the green chili which is a mild chicken chili made with hatch green chilis. Nothing fancy, just good food in a good atmosphere.
google avatar

Yelp
I really wanted to eat here, yet we waited over 40 minutes and watched everyone in the restaurant be served. Even people that came in after us ate & left. I asked the cook where our food was and she just shrugged. So we left.... I have been a fan of Chugwater chili for over 25 years and was so excited to find a place that served it. After server took our order we never saw her again.... We only ordered one burger yet table that came in after us was served two burgers.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Get an ice cream soda. English toffee soda with vanilla ice cream is a delight. They have dragon eggs - freeze dried saltwater taffy which has a delightful texture. We also got a container of chili spice to go.
google avatar

Shawn M.

Yelp
They have really done a wonderful job refurbishing the soda fountain! You can actually get mixed sodas now. The French fries are so good and pretty much the only "plant based" food they offer. My granddaughter ordered the nachos which were a disappointment. Just fake cheese sauce nothing else. It is such a pleasant dining area! We really enjoyed how nice and clean it feels in there now.
google avatar

Troy M.

Yelp
This place has new management and they redecorated in a very organized fashion. They have merchandise along with frozen taffy. The malts and shakes are amazing. If you need a light lunch or mid-afternoon meal, they have a kitchen and of course serve Chugwater chili. Across the street is Tri-county Mercantile and new so not available to review on its own. Nice little place they are suppose to have great coffee, which they did. Pitches three bags of different flavors. Stop at both places. It is worth it.
google avatar

Elaine P.

Yelp
Sweet little stop off I-25. A worthy stop for lunch! Yummy homemade soda fountain drinks! And the famous Chugwater Chili is definitely a must try! The mercantile store across the street looks like a very interesting stop...on the way back home!
google avatar

Gerg P.

Yelp
It's a must stop if passing through. Thick malts and shakes. Quaint town. Unusual old western town
google avatar

Melaura Lee P.

Yelp
Young man working was not able to understand what little or no ice means. Pointed it out he looked confused and left.
google avatar

Debbie J.

Yelp
Get off the main highway, & stop in at Chugwater Soda Fountain. I got a cherry soda. The people and the refreshments are worth the stop.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
Read that this was the oldest Soda Fountain that has been open since 1914 and right then I decided to drive 2 hours, one way, to go here. The place is very clean and the staff is super friendly. Our waitress was great and funny and made our day. We ordered sandwiches, burgers, chili and milkshakes and they were very good. I wish we could have had a soda, but the lines were frozen. But the milkshakes more than made up for that. A great place to stop while traveling. It is a must stop.
google avatar

Peggy B.

Yelp
Ya know, some things should just stay the way the have always been. Such is the Chugwater Soda Fountain. Open daily, you can peak into a time when the locals would chat over pie and coffee. The history of this place comes from 1914 and it's all still here. Wow! Breakfast, home made pies, service with a smile. Chugwater Chili is a must!!!! You're probably passing through to enjoy the beautiful Montana outdoors, but stop in, relax and have some pie. Or a peanutbutter shake. With a side of friendly. Even has a small general store. Just come on in!
google avatar

Kat B.

Yelp
Such a cute, nostalgic place. Wendell the Elk has been overlooking the soda fountain since the 1940s. They do shakes, malts, and cream sodas right at Wyoming's oldest soda fountain. The food isn't incredible, merely okay. But the soda fountain goods are the real deal.
google avatar

Carrie H.

Yelp
Fun to see all the old soda fountain stuff. Decent food and prices. Friendly service.
google avatar

Tami W.

Yelp
If you want a fun rest stop, pop into the Chugwater Soda Fountain and get a shake or a malt! It was worth the detour delicious!

Whitney G.

Yelp
Super cute place and sweet staff. Our burritos were delicious! Looks like they're maybe renovating and it's off to a great start with a cute soda fountain & classic toys and merch.

Lisa J.

Yelp
Been coming here for 30 years. New owners. Cute renovation. BUT...just waited 45 minutes for a chile to go!!! Yikes almighty.
google avatar

Carl C.

Yelp
Greetings from Chugwater Soda Fountain in beautiful Chugwater Wyoming. Here I sit totally enjoying my lunch of Chugwater Chili. I have been coming here for years ever since I found this awesome little restaurant while hauling my bucking bulls to rodeo after rodeo. I'm a Chugwater Chili Junky! I hear they have a nice menu but, I wouldn't know as I always just order a bowl of Chili and a chocolate shake. Our waitress Angela was spot on and super nice. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND a stop here if traveling through Chugwater Wyoming. I gave it five stars but, Ten YUMS.
google avatar

Janet K.

Yelp
Everyone has 10 minutes for chili! If you're on I-25 between Cheyenne and Wheatland this is the place to stop! Handmade shakes and malts, world-famous Chugwater Chili (get the spice blend to go, too), and burgers, fries, burritos and breakfast foods. Sit and eat awhile and then pick up a Wyoming souvenir, t-shirt, or books. Don't just sit at the Chugwater rest area. Drive an extra couple of blocks and stop in at the Soda Fountain!
google avatar

Tony D.

Yelp
Authentic old school soda fountain. Wish they played up on the nostalgia factor a bit. Still worth a stop. The plastic glasses for icecream soda's vs glass was a bit of a let down, but I am guessing that keeping costs down is a thing in this town. I was also disappointed that my friends shake was delivered in a styrofoam cup, not glass with the mixer. I am guessing having the local teens running the place has a lot to do with the lack of making this more of an experience type place. Funny that it is comboed with a liquor store as well
google avatar

Kevin A.

Yelp
Come for the kickass milkshakes. Stay for Wendall (the elk)! This is a hidden gem in Chugwater. Beautiful historic building and solid chili too.
google avatar

Mandy L.

Yelp
This is the best malt shop in Wyoming! Don't believe the hype about Shoshone, if you want a malt this is the place to go. We always make a point of stopping by every time we pass through the area. Hand dipped, hard ice cram malts with a ton of flavor combinations. It is also a cafe with a small comfort food menu. Do yourself a favor and don't pass this place by. It is right off of I-25.
google avatar

Jesse M.

Yelp
Great! One of the yummiest malts I've had in a long time. Clean and bright space with friendly and attentive staff. Good for kids.

Dawn N.

Yelp
What a charming place to eat. It was like going back in time. It made me think about my grandma and when we used to get root beer floats. Food was good. We had fun.
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
I was on a road trip with my siblings and we were hungry... We saw a sign for an original Soda Fountain in Chugwater and decided to stop... What a blast from the past! Great food, interesting antiques to view and good service.
google avatar

Laura R.

Yelp
Price wise average. Good for sustenance on drives. Don't expect chain restaurant and know your in a small town. Were open when others places we're not. Good service. Local hangout for old men coffee talking hay and such. Very child friendly. Actually have a nice high chair not crap wood ones that are not safe. Staff is attentive. Store carries odds and ends even motor oil... town people inside didn't mind toddler running around either. Don't expect a five minute meal unless you order Mabe a pie or something premade. Have alcohol, we don't drink so o idea on the choices to be had there. They were out of a special sandwich that's I think is a German thing? Even has kid books and such.

Dan B.

Yelp
What a great place to stop for lunch and a treat. The owners have great plans for this place which is the oldest continuously opperating soda fontain in Wyoming. The Buffalo Chili Nachos were great and a sharable size and the hand-dipped and blended milkshakes were fantastic.
google avatar

Allison C.

Yelp
Stopping in Chugwater is worth it for this soda fountain! Great shakes and malts and they even have food and restrooms! You will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Sandy R.

Yelp
We stopped here on the way from Buffalo Wyoming to Denver Colorado on 25 South. It was around 11 am and they were just starting lunch. There were three of us. We all got hamburgers and fries. The hamburgers were delicious. Cooked on an outdoor grill so they had that delicious taste. Also bought some T-shirt's since they had a cute selection. They also have toys for kids. A small grocery area as well. The service was fast and friendly. Really enjoyed the stopover! We would definitely recommend this place to travelers for a fun place to stop to eat.

Brad S.

Yelp
You have to stop in and have a malt. It truly is one of the best malt's I have had in sometime. Great atmosphere and a fun place to checkout.
google avatar

Dawnita S.

Yelp
Bad food. My grilled cheese was burned and our service was not up to par at all.
google avatar

Robert M.

Yelp
The malts are good but the service leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
google avatar

Nichole A.

Yelp
Very good milkshakes (we love the Oreo). Also a good place to get a solid cup of coffee. Food is 2**...almost everything is microwaved and pre frozen...but definitely stop for the milkshakes or pie!!

Bobby D.

Yelp
This place is FANTASTIC! I got a salted caramel malt and it was the BEST malt i have ever had and i am 63 now. The lady behind the counter who fixed it was friendly and very polite. Every time i go by Chugwater on I-25 now i will stop at that soda fountain. I can't wait to try other flavors also. THE BEST!

Margaret N.

Yelp
Nostalgic soda fountain. Definitely worth a visit. Really cute authentic shop. Great counter. We stopped just for the shake YUM! but they serve food too. Short trip off the freeway. Perfect rest stop. Staff super friendly Recommend it to anyone passing this way.
google avatar

Alden C.

Yelp
Yummy, yummy and yummy! Thanks so much for being open on a Saturday! That much I want to get across! The only other restaurant in town that I could see that served Chugwater Chili looked closed! I have heard so long about how good Chugwater Chili was and it did not fall short! The staff was very nice and the chili was most tasty indeed! I ordered a side of french fries that were also amazing! Yum! I stocked up on some Chugwater Chili chili powder and got some pepper jelly. Glad that I don't live all that far away so whenever I want to stock up I can go here and get more chili and supplies!
google avatar

Earl M.

Yelp
Old fashioned soda fountain in over hundred year old building. Serve tasty Chugwater chili, great milkshakes. Platters like a smothered burrito. Interesting local place right off I-25 in tiny town

T H.

Yelp
I ordered a Butter Finger Malt. Curtis the Malt Master has a PhD in Maltology. Great job Curtis! WE''LL BE BACH!

Ben S.

Yelp
Fountain drinks and shakes were great. Food was all out of a package and assembled by the server, not worth the restaurant prices.

Suzie S.

Yelp
Great service and menu. We had milk shakes with plenty of flavors to chose from and the famous chili with cheese and onions. Easy to reach from I-25. Assortment of souvenirs available for purchase as well as food items. Well worth the time for stop as you travel through the area
google avatar

Debra T.

Yelp
The chili was great. The t-shirts were way overpriced and the girl behind the counter cussed like a sailor. Did not appreciate that at all. Very unprofessional.

Bob R.

Yelp
I was driving down I-25 from the North, and decided to take the business loop through this tiny town. As I was driving through Chugwater, I came upon this soda fountain @ 314 First St. I stopped in and chatted about the history of the town with the two women behind the counter of an antique English-made bar that is the centerpiece of the place. They presented me with a menu page that described the heritage of the bar. I ordered a chocolate malted to go. As the preparer finished filling the take out Dixie cup with the majority of the malt, she gave me the metal cup that was used in its preparation so I could get the full value of the $4.50 I spent. The product was excellent, thick, creamy, and she did not skimp on the malted. The only thing I would suggest they do to make the experience better is to buy some larger diameter straws.

Gwen F.

Yelp
The breakfast burrito was good -so was the coffee. BUT the waitress was rude and unfriendly! We would have walked out had we known the Stampede Restaurant was open. From the moment we sat down, there was a CHILL in the air and we were the only patrons there! Wonder why? Would DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMEND.

Mira K.

Yelp
I give it 5 stars just for being in operation for almost a century! That aside, chili was solid and simple. And coffee milk shake hit the spot. Finally, they were open on a Sunday when in a small town like that they could have been closed for church. Thankfully not! Check them out and keep them open.

Allen K.

Yelp
I read a review about this place and it came recommended. So, I decided to stop at the Chugwater Soda Fountain. My companion and I were the only two people in the place. We asked about the two different chili offerings on the menu. I asked which was better our waitress said the red was far superior to the green. So, I ordered a bowl of the red. My companion ordered one of each. I had a sinking feeling when I heard the whir of the microwave oven heating our food. When I got my "bowl of red" I was thoroughly unimpressed. It was alright but it wasn't worth getting off the highway for. I think you could do just as good at Wendy's or other fast food taco joint anywhere in america. In their favor, they do make a REAL fountain Coca-Cola. Meaning they take the glass, put the syrup in the bottom of the glass then fill with soda water and stir. Now, this was outstanding. I hadn't had a real fountain coke since the 1970's and Chugwater Soda Fountain make an excellent one. However, I don't think it is worth getting off the interstate to drink one unless you are a true cokaholic. If so, knock yourself out. Our wait staff was attentive and friendly enough, but I suppose they have so few customers, that they acted as if we were on of the locals, because they went into great detail concerning the sex lives, drinking, domestic violence and shootings in recent history. I must admit, that I found the local gossip entertaining but quite unprofessional.
