The 26 Best Things to Do in Rome

"Chiesa di Dio Padre Misericordioso, also known as the Jubilee Church, was designed by American architect Richard Meier as part of the Vatican's grand church-building and city revival program leading up to the Millennium Jubilee, a Catholic pilgrimage year held in 2000. The church is free, though getting there may cost you. It's about six miles from central Rome, so a taxi could easily cost more than €25 ($28). Alternatively, you can reach the church via public transport for €3 ($4) round trip." - Katie Parla, Maresa Manara

Jubilee Church

"Tell me: What’s this place all about?Chiesa di Dio Padre Misericordioso, also known as the Jubilee Church, was designed by American architect Richard Meier as part of the Vatican's grand church-building and city revival program leading up to the Millennium Jubilee, a Catholic pilgrimage year held in 2000. The church is free, though getting there may cost you. It's about six miles from central Rome, so a taxi could easily cost more than €25 ($28). Alternatively, you can reach the church via public transport for €3.00 round trip. Wow. What’s it like being there? The building is all about light, which streams into the structure's white volumes through strategically placed windows. The light is always changing and the atmosphere of the church changes right along with it, from gleaming and lively to dim and gloomy. Pretty interesting! Is there a guide involved? No guide. You just walk in and look around. More often than not, the place is virtually empty. Who comes here?Aside from the parishioners from the surrounding Tor Tre Teste residential district, only hardcore modern and contemporary architecture fans make the trek. Did it meet expectations? When the church was being built, it was praised as a potential game-changer for a depressed neighborhood and posited as the catalyst for urban renewal. That hope hasn't exactly panned out and the outdoor white concrete "sails" have mellowed from gleaming white to a kind of dull grey. The interior, on the other hand, is clean and pristine white. The way Meier designed the walls creates shadow and shade, allowing white to transform as light moves across the surfaces of the walls. Got it. So, then, what, or who, do you think it’s best for?It takes over an hour to get to and from the church from central Rome, so a visit is no good for someone on a tight schedule. Modern architecture lovers will find the place immensely interesting, as will people who have visited Rome many times and are eager to get outside the center to see neighborhoods where the majority of Rome-dwellers live." - Katie Parla

All-white concrete building designed by USA star-architect Richard Meyer, located in an otherwise unnoticeable neighborhood. Worth the subway + bus pilgrimage, if you want to see "world quality" architecture in town. They say the building -that has no air conditioner- can turn very warm in summer, which fortunately wasn't the case on the day we visited. I wonder about winter...

Stunning, i did a project on this building a decade ago and getting to see it in person was an absolute treat. The architectural design and construction methods were truly fascinating! If you have the opportunity to visit I would highly recommend, it's a modern minimalist take for church/place of worship design. It's free entry and the staff are very friendly.

Open daily 7:30 to 12:30, 16:00 to 19:30. Mass is celebrated: Weekdays 9:00, 18:00; Sundays and Solemnities 9:00, 10:00, 11:30, 18:00. This church ran massively over-budget, costing five times the original estimate. The knock-on result has been that other suburban Roman parishes have been worshipping in shop premises for years while waiting for their own churches. The rain has been getting in, the acoustics are dreadful and the underfloor heating does not work properly. Further, the edifice only seats a congregation of 300. And, as other visitors have noted, it's not pure white any more.

Really pleased to see and experience Richard Meier's architecture. The white exterior walls were a bit dirty though. Also free entrance. Definetly worth the 1h 45m trip from the center of Rome.

The Jubilee Church, formally known as Dio Padre Misericordioso. So beautiful church and community center in Tor Tre Teste in Rome. Also called "the crown jewel of the Vicariato di Roma's" .Tip: I saw that the church's site is divided into four main parts: first, the precinct, ; second, the northeast terrace; third, the northwest recreation court; fourth, the west parking area. Enjoy. *****
