The 10 Best Things to Do in León, Nicaragua in 2025

"Dating from the 18th century, the Church of la Merced was one more historic church I appreciated for its architecture and history during my day of visits." - Matthew Kepnes

The Basílica de la Merced, located along the lively Jirón de la Unión, offers a striking contrast to the busy street outside. Inside, the basilica is rich with statues, golden architectural details, and beautifully crafted murals that reflect its historical and religious significance. Every corner feels carefully adorned, inviting quiet observation. What stood out the most was a miniature nativity scene with Peruvian references, a small but powerful detail that blends traditional Christian imagery with local culture. It felt intimate and meaningful, especially during the Christmas season. I entered in the middle of a service, which added to the solemn atmosphere. I lit two electronic candles, took time to pray, and slowly walked around the church. Despite being brief, the visit felt peaceful and grounding (a moment of calm reflection within the heart of the city in 25th of December, Xmas day!) The basilica is not only a place of worship but also a space where art, faith, and Peruvian identity come together beautifully.

Gorgeous church with free entry. Striking exterior which is very unlike surrounding buildings, and a bright, high-ceiling interior with many carvings, murals, and statues to admire. Several worshipers engaged in prayer at our visit, so mind that you're respectful and quiet.

A must stop for early colonial architecture. If you’re Catholic there is an added bonus…very meaningful and spiritual.
