Where in the World Is Saint Valentine?

"The Iglesia de San Antón was closed until the organization Mensajeros de la Paz (Messengers of Peace) took control of the parish in 2015. Since then, the church has been running regular services and events, while also catering to the needs of the homeless. The church even gives blessing to pets and their owners at the beginning of the year. However, it may be what’s inside the church, encased in glass, that is its greatest treasure. In the display case are what are believed to be the remains of the legendary Saint Valentine of Rome.  The life of Saint Valentine is shrouded in mystery, as there were several figures with the same name throughout history. On ancient Roman Catholic rosters of saints, there are around a dozen or so Saints Valentine. The one who has his namesake attached to Valentine’s Day is commonly referred to as Saint Valentine of Rome. While much of his life is difficult to verify, it’s largely believed he was martyred at the hands of Emperor Claudius II. When Claudius noticed his military numbers dwindling, he banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. It was his belief that soldiers were becoming too attached to their families. Legend has it that one Valentine defied this rule and continued to wed young couples. He was eventually discovered and jailed, then eventually clubbed and beheaded on February 14, 269. It is said it that he signed a farewell note with the phrase, “Your Valentine.” However, martyrologies show that three other Saint Valentines were also martyred on that date, adding more confusion to the question of Saint Valentine’s identity.   It has long been thought that some of his remains were deposited at the Basilica di Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome, while the rest were sent to St. Antón in the late 1700s as a gift from King Carlos IV. However, several churches have claimed to house the remains of St. Valentine, including one in Dublin, Ireland. It has created a bit of controversy as to who houses the true remains—a question that may never be answered." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

This is the best church ever. It is a church where you enjoy a tea, a warm seat, share a football match with others and even a dinner. I would say it is a real social project by Padre Angel in the heart of the city surrounded by cozy places. Everyone is welcome to come inside and enjoy inside. Open 24 hours is a must in your visit to Madrid.

The church was originally an our treasure but now it’s become one of the most tacky and ugliest church you could ever visit in Madrid city center If you come here to admire the art, you will probably be disappointed to see that most of the art has been pushed aside or mixed with some other items that definitely do not belong to a church of this age

Beautiful Mass with a lovely Padre. Open 24/7 to serve people. This is where the bones of St. Valentine are enshrined.

How many churches act as they preach?? This temple opens 24h/7, the priests and the volunteers here help homeless not only with shelter but also with phone chargers, breakfast, dinner, free wifi.. even medical back-up for homeless affected by severe illnesses such as Parkinson's. There is always hot coffee and water for people in need during harsh weather and especially a kind person listening to them. I would rate them 10 stars !!! Oh, and btw did you know Saint Valentine's bones are kept in this church?

Nice but also discriminatory!! Church is amazing, especially at night with all the illuminating lights inside and as a place for the homeless it gives a deeper meaning, but I do not understand why are people not being left alone to enjoy some silence there. I was looking for some peace at night to contemplate but was totally not nicely asked to leave the place as I did not have the "number" - I guess it is a place homeless people get as sort of a card to be able to stay inside. Although place was almost empty I had to go out.. And by the way it was quite stupid as I just gave 5 € donation as I was entering. Please leave people to enjoy this place of worship and make it free for everyone!

Well no offense I hope they can find a suitable place were they can serve food. Because of free food many people accumulating outside the church and some of them are drunk, and even littering the area. You can see trash, cigarette buds and spit everywhere. This morning, with my son we're on our way to School. I was frightened by this two drunk men outside the church they shouted and saying bad words to us I don't even know them. This two guy so drunk early morning eating their breakfast outside the church. I just hope they can find another place were they can serve food. We used to attend the Sunday Mass here before but so sad it doesn't look like a church anymore instead a flea market. Now my family go to Iglesia de San Ildefonso just in the neighborhood also.
