Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, built in 1340, is a peaceful escape high above the village. Its Gothic and neo-Gothic elements—especially the rose window and sculpted portals—showcase centuries of craftsmanship. Inside, you'll find quiet beauty and a few notable artworks. It’s worth the uphill walk for both the architecture and the panoramic view over Riomaggiore.

We enjoyed a village party outside the church. We were welcomed very warmly by villagers and entertained , invited to share food and drink. As a result we attended a Sunday Mass to give thanks. If only we had felt the same welcome. That said, we felt the presence of the Lord in this Church and return to our ministry in New Zealand uplifted by the power of the Holy Spirit. May God’s blessing be upon this place. <><

Built around the mid-14th century (1340) under the patronage of Fieschi noble Genoese family, the church was restored in 1870, gaining its current neo-Gothic facade (typical to 1800 architecture). The 'rosone' (the circular, rose-like window above entrance), black-and-white stripped pillars, and the 3-naves basilica structure are similar to those in Chiesa San Giovanni Battista in Monterosso and typical to 13-14th century Genoan style. Inside, there are several Renaissance religious masterpieces. It's beautiful by its elegance and serenity.

Lovely old church in the middle of Riomaggiore. Nice view of the village and nice view of the sea as well! The church bells can be heard from the whole village, so if you can't find it, wait for the bells and follow the sound.

Beautiful church in Riomaggiore. Close to the church there is an elevator if you do not want to go on by foot upstairs to the castle.
