Sant’Antonio Nuovo – Trieste’s neoclassical masterpiece at the end of the canal (May 3, 2025) What a stunning surprise! After strolling along the peaceful Canal Grande, you suddenly step into this vast sunlit square and BAM – a gigantic Greek-temple-style church with six soaring Ionic columns and statues of saints gazing over the city. Built in 1849, Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo is the biggest parish church in Trieste and feels like a little piece of ancient Athens dropped on the Adriatic. On a perfect spring afternoon the white stone glows, the sky is endless blue, and the square buzzes with locals and visitors. The view from the top of the steps back down the canal is pure postcard material. One of the most beautiful and photogenic spots in the entire city – don’t leave Trieste without seeing it!

Located at the end of the Canal Grande in Trieste is the largest Catholic Church in the city, the neoclassical Sant'Antonio Nuovo, built between 1825 and 1849.

The Church of Saint Antonio Nuovo in Trieste is a beautiful and peaceful place of worship, located at the end of the Grand Canal. Its neoclassical architecture, with striking columns and a serene interior, creates a calming atmosphere. Though not richly decorated like some cathedrals, its simplicity and harmony leave a lasting impression. A must-see for architecture and history lovers. 4/5.

I think this is the biggest Catholic church in Trieste. It is located right in front of the Grand Canal and Ponte Rosso. The interior is not as decorated as in some other large Catholic churches.

Very nice catholic church in Neoclassic style with classic columns and statues. Located on a nice square near the Canal Grande. Nice views of the church in the end of the channel can be viewed from the Ponte Verde bridge at the Riva Tre Novembre street.

The beautiful church of St. Anthony is on the beautiful square with a pleasant atmosphere. Church of Sant'Antonio The Taumaturgo is a beautiful church both from the outside and from the inside. The church is popularly called S.Antonio Nuovo because it replaces an earlier church of the same title, dating back to the second half of the eighteenth century. It was erected between 1828 and 1849 (1808) by the Swiss architect Pietro Nobile. At one time the church mirrored in the waters of the canal harbor which is still today, in part, in the Teresian Borgo. The façade is characterized by a majestic pronaos with six Ionic columns and a large pediment. The interior of the church is richly decorated with frescoes and beautiful details of famous sculptors. The spiritual service is very nice and accompanied with good atmosphere.
