We stayed at Cielo from late December over Christmas through to the New Year.||Firstly, the positives - of which there are many:||It's in a great location, a short taxi trip from the airport without being too close. On the top side of the island on Bophut beach and near to Mae Nam. A couple of minutes walk to the main circular road and twenty mins walk either way to a load of different bars, restaurants, Fisherman's Village etc. Loads of legitimate and reasonably priced massage places on the doorstep. ||The hotel itself and grounds are small but beautiful - very boutique-y, indeed! We had a standard suite (no pool) and it was simply but beautifully designed. The pool and bar areas are really well laid out, the pool beds are genuinely fantastic. The spa is small but again beautiful, and if you're incapable of switching off on holiday there are exercise classes including Muay Thai available. ||Next, the food: you'll see many reviews saying that people visit just for the seafood restaurant, and I can confirm the food is genuinely excellent - we had one of the best ribeyes (one of our two non-Thai meals over nearly two weeks that we allowed ourselves) of our lives for dinner one evening when the weather was poor and we stayed local, the pizza are freshly made by the pool and the Lebanese platter is fantastic with great portion sizes. ||The best assets for the hotel though are the staff - unfailingly friendly and helpful, quick to respond with really good service. They work incredibly hard from 7am-ish through to closing time every day. The owners are French, with the lady managing the place and her partner the chef. She's great, always happy to say hello and talk about the hotel and the area when she's not running around being extremely busy. ||General area: easy to get elsewhere on the island by Taxi (use Bolt or Grab, don't hail taxis unless you like being ripped off or haggling!) or Songteauw. Nearside pavement out of the hotel for clockwise around the island, farside for anticlockwise. Loads of pharmacies, opticians, 711's etc. if you fancy snacks / water / meds of any kind. Fisherman's village is much nicer than we expected, loads of good bars and food places amongst the more obvious tourist-y stuff. Strongly recommend Charm, ran by an ex UK Masterchef contestant.||Re: prices etc., you pay for the quality of the hotel and services, it's not a budget outfit. If you occasionally fancy a cheaper, less high quality meal then there are many places (Pico was great, really friendly, two places left along the beach) either side where you can grab a quick penang curry & cocktail for half the price. ||The negatives:||Not the fault of the hotel, but pool bed reservation etiquette was an issue at times as it got much busier towards new year. It's a very international range of guests, and for some there's no issue in reserving three / four / five beds at 07:30 and then not turning up until 3 hours later, if they turn up at all. One English lady I spoke was angry that so many beds were unoccupied but reserved towards midday, but it's wrong to then blame the staff and demand they police how long a bed has been reserved. Do what we did - get there early for breakfast (opens at 07:30), reserve a couple of places when you sit down and then go immediately to them afterwards. Culturally what is acceptable will differ, but to anyone who has an issue with bed blocking my advice is get there early and occupy the beds there and then. Sort any problems out with other guests yourselves, don't demand that the very very nice and 100% non-confrontational staff police the area for you because you turned up later on. That said this was only during the last couple of days and not the majority of our 11 full days there.||The male co-owner. Again not a massive issue, just a niggle based on extensive observation during our stay. He is evidently a great chef, 100%, a good showman. Just don't expect him to talk to you if you're not French. If you are French, at some point he'll probably say hello, ask how things are going etc. If you're not, he probably won't. Maybe it's just the Rosbifs, who knows :D but again the food / kitchen / service is fantastic.
