23 Best Bars in Rome

"Rooftop bars are a hot ticket item in Rome right now, but Cielo—on the top of Hotel de La Ville—is one of the best, with its riviera striped decor, candle-lit tables and sweeping views across Rome. Classic cocktails are their jam and the bartenders really know their stuff. On the night we visited, young, beautiful, and international jet set was the vibe. There was a group of Americans dressed up and ready to party; a Swiss couple on a date; two Glaswegians propped up at the bar; and some very chic Romans having an after-work drink. It’s glam but not intimidating—the kind of place where you can pull up a chair and have a drink solo without feeling out of place. There’s nothing fancy or gimmicky about this cocktail list; it’s all about real-deal, classic drinks—with a twist. Try the ‘watergame’, with blanco tequila, mezcal, honey and basil, or our personal 1980s-love child favorite, the ‘gargamel’: a beautifully blue concoction of Tanqueray gin, bergamot, grapefruit bitters and lemon." - Maresa Manara

Cielo Bar

"First impression? Rooftop bars are a hot ticket item in Rome right now, but Cielo—on the top of Hotel de La Ville—is one of the best, with its riviera striped decor, candle-lit tables and sweeping views across Rome. Classic cocktails are their jam and the bartenders really know their stuff. How’s the crowd? On the night we visited, young, beautiful, and international jet set was the vibe. There was a group of Americans dressed up and ready to party; a Swiss couple on a date; two Glaswegians propped up at the bar; and some very chic Romans having an after-work drink. It’s glam but not intimidating—the kind of place where you can pull up a chair and have a drink solo without feeling out of place. How are the drinks? There’s nothing fancy or gimmicky about this cocktail list; it’s all about real-deal, classic drinks—with a twist. Try the ‘watergame’, with blanco tequila, mezcal, honey and basil, or our personal 1980s-love child favorite, the ‘gargamel’: a beautifully blue concoction of Tanqueray gin, bergamot, grapefruit bitters and lemon. If there’s food, is it worth ordering something to eat? Late-night bar snacks are simple (salted peanuts, potato chips), keeping the drinks appropriately centre stage. But there’s comprehensive day time menu that runs until 5:30pm, featuring salads, club sandwiches, burgers and pasta. Did the staff do you right? We rocked up on an usually quiet night, which meant we got talking spirits with the head mixologists. They couldn’t have been lovelier, even giving us a couple of drinks on the house. Wrap it up: what are we coming here for? Beautiful cocktails, beautiful people, in a very beautiful place." - Maresa Manara

We visited here last week after a recommendation from a tour guide, and whilst it’s not cheap, it’s worth every penny. The view is spectacular, and the terrace is the perfect compliment to that. Clean, well spaced out, and with all of the little touches one would hope for like fires, heaters, plants, nibbles, a DJ, and blankets. Highly recommend coming here and watching the sun go down. The staff were friendly and super attentive. The patrons were all respectful and chilled out. Even though the place feels exclusive, it’s also super warm and welcoming once you arrive. To top it all, the cocktails were some of the best I’ve ever tried. Give this place a go. Highly recommend the Mamma Mia Spritz!

We came here for our one and only fancy meal in Rome and the food was incredible, I almost cried! They did send us a last minute email asking us not to wear shorts and this was a major issue for my husband who already had braved the Vatican with pants earlier that day (the man lives in shorts) … so he wore shorts and thankfully the restaurant didn’t say anything to us. Aside from feeling a bit awkward about that, it was incredible.

Google
Exactly what I was looking for. The view, the quality of the flavors (it's Italy!), and the service was excellent. A version of a whiskey sour with a splash of red wine.... Yes please! The scallops with pureed potatoes and truffle.... Ummm yup, one of those! And for God's sake, there is a cheesecake. Ricotta cheese and orange sauce, add a blood orange sorbet... And yeah, THAT is a must! All in all a great experience. The fact that it is just up the street from the Spanish steps but yet hidden a bit, that sealed the deal. Is it inexpensive? Nope. Is it trendy? Maybe. But is it obnoxious and super touristy? Absolutely not. So in super touristy Rome, it is a wonderful getaway inside the city. Check 'em out, and enjoy the relaxation.

Was definitely pricey but worth every penny! The view, drinks and atmosphere were amazing and on top of that the service was incredible, everyone was very polite and easy to talk to. Would definitely recommend !

Google
Fine dining experience with an amazing view. The staff is fully prepared and offer delicious suggestions for dinner, dessert, wine, and everything in between. Our party loved everything we ordered and would definitely go again.

Google
Cielo offers one of the most memorable aperitivo experiences in Rome. The view alone is stunning, but it’s the quality of the overall experience that truly stands out. The snack selection is delicious and well-curated. Cocktails are innovative, fresh, and beautifully balanced. What impressed me most was the service: highly professional, genuinely attentive, and always a step ahead. Many details were anticipated without needing to ask, which made the entire evening feel seamless. Highly recommended.

Google
Beautiful place with amazing views of Rome. They have great drink options and the service was excellent. The only thing is you can’t really see much of the view while you’re seated, which defeats the purpose of going there in the first place.. we had the option to sit at the table closer to the balcony or further away (further away was recommended by the host to have a better view), however, you truly can’t see much. Perhaps one recommendation would be to have high top tables? Either way, it was still worth it! They have a live DJ, too!

Google
The place is amazing. We had a Mediterranean menu and the food was delicious. It was the best octopus I've ever eaten. The staff and service was very friendly, attentive and hospitable. The atmosphere was peak with the wonderful sight and live music. Overall the place is quite expensive, but it's totally worth it.

Yelp
review is for the cielo terrace bar and omg, what a view and the wine/cocktail/non-alcholic cocktails are all to die for. Loved both non-alcoholic cocktails (fifteen something and mario bros, why it's called that, no idea). They have lots of shade with the large umbrellas and there are many fans as well. drinks come with delicious olives/roasted pistachios/chips apps. It's not cheap but you get your money's worth of ambiance and reprieve from the scorching sun.

Yelp
We recently stayed two nights here in Rome, Italy at what was touted in at least one guidebook as a 5-star hotel. It was vastly overrated! Hotel personnel were professional and helpful enough, our bed was comfortable, and the room had a garden view and was equipped with a flat-screen TV. But almost $1,000 per night for a double bed with cramped, slow elevators; a bar that was not even open at 10:00 p.m. on a Friday night; no swimming pool, no whirlpool, and no spa; and a place that had run out of electrical adapters so couldn't provide one the first night but did the second; and wanted 9 Euros (about $13.50) for a small can of Coca-Cola from the room minibar when I was able to secure a larger bottle of Coke from a food van a quarter-block away at the top of the Spanish Steps for just 3 Euros? C'mon! All the European charm and Elemis bath products in the world can't close that wide a gap in money's worth!

Yelp
We absolutely loved our stay at the Intercontinental. You cannot beat the location at the top of the Spanish Steps. Very easy walking to other close attractions in the area. We even took long walk back from the Coliseum while stoping to see other places and food. The hotel has great service like other Intercontinental Hotels. However, as this is Rome this is an older building so don't expect 21century bathroom and hottubs. It is the location why you chose to stay here. In every need I had the staff was able to guide us for what we wanted. Some advice though for first time visitors you need to book your Tours of Vatican and Coliseum before you arrive and I highly recommend you get the earliest time. Much less crowds and leaves the afternoon for exploring. Tour group "Walks of Italy" was great and small groups. We had 12 people for our Vatican tour and was inside before opening to public at 8:15am. Well worth it.

Yelp
Beautiful stately and a classic hotel convenient located in the best part of town personally... Right above the Spanish Steps and Via Condotti. To my understanding it used to be a private villa for a polish princess! The concierge was incredibly helpful with restaurant suggestions and helped us book a small and private tour with the Sistine chapel that was fantastic. Would repeat it in a heartbeat. Our guide was so knowledgeable and thorough; I did my undergrad in Art History and was impressed. The breakfast buffet had a beautiful spread and had two beautiful outdoor terraces. And speaking of terraces, our suite was nothing short of incredible. Though the rooms were decorated a bit more "stately" than my personal taste, I really could live here happily. I'm looking forward to my next return. My only disappointment was to find that they charged 10€ for the converter in the fridge especially to find that I placed it back in the fridge but was charged anyway.

Yelp
how do I even begin, we absolutely loved this hotel. the buffet was absolutely amazing I wish every morning I could wake up to a buffet like that. our room was awesome & big though we were barely in there. we had twin beds which we didn't need but it was fine if anything it was nice having a bed to myself for a few nights. the hot chocolate I had every morning I will forever hate hot chocolate in the USA because we do not make it like that over here! it was so delicious. they even saw me put milk in it and then gave it with milk the next morning which was just perfect & amazing they noticed. the only bad thing was the NOT free wifi. why do hotels charge for it? mcdonalds has free wifi. come on. I just really hate when hotels charge especially the nicer ones. it seems any nice hotel charges meanwhile a cheap one gives it free, why is that? it was the perfect location and the perfect ending to our amazing Europe trip. just stop with the charging for wifi. if anything put a code for guests only so not everyone can use it. also yes this hotel is old and not all modern but I liked that.

Yelp
This time we used my wife's free night! We were upgraded as usual to a bigger than usual room that had a beautiful view of the Spanish steps and a much needed super super comfy bed which was sorely needed after a month of middle of nowhere Italy B&B's and hotels. I always expect great things from an Intercontinental and this place, for the 5th time did not disappoint. We did not eat at the hotel this time. Location is fabulous and the people are super friendly and a few recognized me from previous stays. I do have a complaint this time. I had late check out. Will someone at the hotel please explain to me why the cleaning person knocked on my door and woke us up at 8:30AM? This is unacceptable at a 5 star hoteL and why it pains not to give this stay 5 stars. I shouldn't have to leave the do not disturb sign out when I go to sleep. Inexcusable. The other minor issue was that during the turndown service, napkins and utensils were taken away before I had a chance to eat the great fruit left for us as Platinum members. We will return as usual next time. My 4:00 check out as a Platinum member is another awesome perk especially when my train leaves at 5:30!

Yelp
This hotel is our landing spot whenever my wife and I first arrive (and depart) Italy. We'll plant ourselves here before heading on to other cities like Positano, Bologna, et al. Situated at the top of the Spanish steps, there's plenty to do. You can walk most places or take a taxi that the doorman is happy to flag down for you. Head down to the Piazza Navona for late night dinner alfresco or shop at the merchants at the bottom of the steps. Find a pizza place, a bakery, a glove maker or dive into a coffee granita on your way. Or just be a tourist and find the usual spots which are not far at all. Take full advantage of the concierge desk- they're consistently great at their job and do it in many languages. Rooms are nicely (although ornate) decorated and suites are even nicer. Prices are lofty. Make good use of your Priority points here! Thankfully the Euro has reset against the dollar lately. Love the breakfast and smallish cozy dining room. The offerings are to die for, although carnivores will enjoy it even more than "veggie me". Elevators are tiny and old- lots of character. Service is impeccable. Have fun.

Yelp
After reading the Trip Advisor reviews, I was in tense debate on booking this hotel. However, since it was Intercontinental and close to the Spanish Steps, I went against my instinct - and was disappointed. It is very near the Spanish Steps, however "overlooking the Spanish Steps" would be an over statement. The rooms were high priced, but seemingly only for the location. As a Platinum member, I was hoping for an upgrade for my parents and maybe if there was a couch, I could stay at the same hotel. On check in, I was a bit mislead. I thought the room we got was the upgrade and then there would be a charge for me to stay. When I went down later, I was told by someone at the desk (not who checked me in) that it was already included with the upgrade. That was great... until I got my bill and was charged an 120 euros per night ( If I would have known, I would have stay at the hotel I was planning on staying at). Service was good. If we need ice, we could call down and they would promptly bring it up. The porters were also very quick and nice. The front desk, as with other reviews, left something to be desired. Perhaps it was our American passports that caused this tension, but nonetheless, it wasn't the traditional quality of an Intercontinental. Amenities were good, typical of that type of hotel. There were no outlets in the bathroom! Curling my hair in the bathroom was not an option. One morning while heating water for tea and ironing, we apparently tripped a breaker and lost power. We called and it was restored within 15 minutes. There was a thermostat on the wall, but all we could get was heat, so we resorted to opening the windows - which is very loud if you are facing the street leading to the Spanish Steps. Small elevators, no pool or spa, and up to 40 euros for internet! Overall, I was very disappointed for the cost! I would not recommend or return. Other hotels, were nicer rooms and less cost and its easy to get around anywhere with the Metro and walking.

Yelp
This hotel is in a great neighborhood, the top of the Spanish Stairs and home of the fancy shopping in Rome. As with Dennis T, I had expected much, much more from this hotel. The room was the smallest I have ever been in, the amenities and services are the most expensive (20+ Euros for internet), and a okay view. When we arrived, it was raining. Our car pulled up, the driver unloaded our luggage and the Bell Staff were patiently waiting inside the door, watching us. I had expected more from this type of hotel, considering the price. The check-in staff were nice, at best and not attentive. The upside is that the bedding was comfortable, it's located in the heart of Rome, and the concierges were extremely helpful, but understaffed.

Yelp
This was our first visit to Rome and the staff made up feel very welcome. We received a free upgrade at check-in! The breakfast was also excellent! It's a great location to see the sights as well. I will note that they charge for wifi. I've been to other four and five stars hotels and there was no charge for wifi. However, since we signed up for the rewards program for free we received free wifi.

Yelp
A nice hotel, good customer service, high prices. Small rooms (expected for the city center). No Executive Lounge for Platinum Elite customers. No complimentary water. Good location.

Yelp
This is a great location as it's at the top of the Spanish Steps, it's near many great shops and the breakfast buffet is amazing.

Yelp
This hotel is great. They upgraded us to a huge veranda that overlooks the city. Gorgeous!

Yelp
Great location at the top of the Spanish steps, near the Spagna Metro station. Old hotel. Kinda shabby. Needs renovation. Service by staff was lacking in warmth. No turn down service. No free wifi in the lobby. Had to pay 12 euros for the day.

Bill L.

Yelp
I have stayed here before and was impressed at the staffs remembering my wife and me. I see some less then five star ratings, quite possibly those persons could be nice and show some kindness to all the staff, they would find they were treated with more respect. It is within your abilities to be caring and helpful, remember you get what you give! Try it see how much you gain...
