Art and Culture in Athens

"In the early 1920s, a hairdresser who used to live in Paris opened Ciné Paris, Greece’s first outdoor cinema. Ever since, open-air cinemas have been a staple of summer life in Greece. Ciné Paris closed down after 40 years of operation and reopened in 1986 to become locals’ favorite summer haunt. Located in the neighborhood of Plaka, the rooftop garden of Ciné Paris offers stunning night views of the Acropolis. All non-Greek speaking movies are shown in their original version with Greek subtitles. The cinema is open from May to October, and the usual screening time is at 9:00 PM. Seats aren’t numbered, so arrive at least 15 minutes earlier to find a good spot. There’s an intermission after the first half of the movie to grab one more beer or snacks from the concession. Remember to have your mosquito repellent on hand and maybe a light jacket to protect you from the breeze. Cinephiles shouldn’t miss the opportunity to browse through vintage movie posters in the shop by the entrance." - MATADOR_NETWORK

Cine Paris is not the first open-air cinema I've visited, but it's certainly one of the most beautiful, especially with its stunning view of the Acropolis. The main seating area follows the classic Athenian cinema style, with pairs of chairs separated by small tables, giving it a cozy café feel. A distinctive feature of this cinema is the set of three balconies behind the main seating area—two smaller side balconies accommodating about four seats each, and a larger central balcony. We were lucky enough to watch the film from one of these balconies, making it feel almost like a private viewing. If you want these special spots, I recommend arriving early as seating isn't assigned—first come, first served!

Beautiful cinema, and sweet staff. We accidentally bought tickets for Saturday instead of Friday, but when we arrived she helped us change it 🙏 Beautiful scenery, and good selection of drinks and snacks. The movies are shown in English with Greek subtitles.

Unfortunately, we couldn't watch the movie because of the rain. It started raining 5-10 minutes after the movie started. I waited for it to stop for a while, but when the rain didn't stop, they refunded our money. It was very enjoyable. We are thinking of going again. It has a view of the Acropolis and the chairs are very comfortable.

Nice and cozy cinema. Amazing view of Athens Acropolis walls. Romantic atmosphere. 4 stars only because where I was, sound wasn’t good. But it’s a summer cinema, so all good!

Nice outdoor cinema in Plaka. I highly recommend buying your tickets online in advance. Seating is not reserved and it's a popular spot showing older movies. Ticketing is handled through more.com. Chairs are comfortable and the view is great, but the sound was not great, so knocking off one star. It was loud enough but not clear. Concession prices are a little high for a movie theater, but dirt cheap for a rooftop bar, so eh. Cocktails were fine, refreshing. The view of the Acropolis is of the rock, not the structures. Very clean, staff was friendly and helpful, WCs available, stairs up to the cinema. I did not look for an elevator, but the cinema is not on the ground floor.

It was an awesome experience, tickets for students are 8 euros, for adults 10 euros (July 2025). Total must have if u are visiting Athens, even local people come here and recommend it. Our movie had English and greek subtitles. I recommend getting 30 minus earlier for good seats(cinema opens 2 hours earlier) if u are watching the first movie of the evening. For a second movie they let people 5 minutes earlier (it's a big queue). At the cinema is a snack bar with hot dogs, popcorn, nachos, nuts, alcoholic and not alcoholic drinks. The prices in general are normal/cheap ( I paid for nachos with cheese dip and soda 9,5 €). Totally recommend

Lovely atmosphere and location with a nice view. Decent prices as well. The movie was Phaedra from 1962 and so fitting. Although it was fully booked online, I went to the booth to get a ticket. It was May 1st and opened. Free seating. Blankets if needed. Just lovely.

Ideal for a chill summer night! Book your tickets in advance, and arrive when the door opens, and you can get a seat on the top terrace that has an even better view.
