I last reviewed my neighborhood theater in 2013. I don't see a lot of movies in the theater, but when I do it's here or the Beekman, both local geriatric theaters convenient for me. If a documentary or art film is not playing at Cinema 1 2 3, I will go to Lincoln Plaza on the UWS (which is still charmingly dumpy).
So when I went to buy the ticket for Cafe Society, I was stunned that the price had leapt to 18 dollars!
When I took my seat, I understood. (Also I talked to the manager, asking when prices went up, and he told me they reduced the number of seats by 35% to make room for the new plush leather recliners.)
The whole theater was gutted except the bathrooms. No longer the color of Pepto Bismol, but still the same size and number of stalls.
It's now a fancy theater which is why they raised prices 20% in a short period of time.
But it's worth it. I will definitely be back. I miss seeing movies, but as a reviewer of cabaret and off-Broadway shows, who also goes to see music at Rockwood and other downtown venues, I just don't get to movies as much as I would like.
They do have an pre-noon special. This doesn't, however, help when your movie begins at 12:15.
The Beekman on 65th and 2nd or so is a much better deal, though they have 9 buck tickets after 9PM. That works for me on nights I'm not at a show; I can just work out on 63rd at Equinox and walk 4 blocks to the theater.
