A municipal treasure that far from being celebrated, ends up being something we're not really supposed to say much about. Every member of the city and national government with any sway over relevant matters should be doing all they can to ensure the viability and longevity of this establishment.
Formally, Cinematheque is a "club" for film lovers. There is a small annual membership fee and a suggested "donation" at each screening. They only advertise what they are showing via an email sent to members. They have to jump through these specific hoops to avoid Ministry of Culture oversight. In practice, what this is is a great little art house cinema with a dedicated and admirable curator of fine film at the helm. I've lived in plenty of larger cities that lacked anything as well run as this.
Add to it the accompanying business ringing the courtyard they are in (hotel, bar, restaurant), the ultra central location, and the various talks and presentations they put on, and you have a first rate cornerstone for Hanoi's arts and cultural community.
What they do is criminally under appreciated.
