This would have been a 3-star (good-to-go) experience if our entire stay had been in the more recently updated room that we actually booked.
The motel's online booking system allows you to select a specific room, which we did -- carefully -- only to be put in another room once we checked in.
The first night we stayed in Room 15. The carpet was dirty, the furniture was dated, the bathroom sink was just on the wrong side of acceptably clean, and the shower and toilet were just on the right side of acceptably clean. The mattress was fine but the linens had seen better days. Overall, it was not a comfortable stay.
On the second day we asked to be moved to the room we had originally booked (Room 17). It appeared to have been more recently updated. The floors were laminate hardwood, the linens seemed newer, and the bathroom was spiffier. The mattress was a little springy (i.e., we could sort of feel the springs while we slept) but worked out just fine. The mini fridge and microwave were useful. The hiking guides and other references provided in the room were a really nice touch. Overall, this was a good room at a very reasonably price.
If we hadn't been moved in Room 17, our four-night stay would have just been a one-night stay. The more updated room saved the experience and this ended up being a good base from which to explore the area around Escalante without having to camp in 16 degree weather.
