On the Grid : Running at Montjuïc

"Don’t forget to pack your trainers if you’re heading to Barcelona! There are loads of areas in the city for runners, but the mountain of Montjuïc gets the prize. We’re not going to suggest any routes, because the ideal is to start running uphill and let yourself be amazed by the place! On your way you’ll be able to admire green spaces such as the Botanical Garden, the Greek Theatre, or Parque del Mirador del Midga or ‘Noon’s Lookout’ Park, where you can look over the stunning views of the port and the city while you run." - ZeClé

Calm relaxing park, although telepherique was not working that day, which could have been more enjoyable, we enjoyed our visit and green scenes.

Google
We only visited Montjuic castle so I can't comment of the rest of the park. There's not a massive amount to actually look at inside the castle I did think there would be more so a little disappointed on that. The views are spectacular and the cable car journey good too.We visited in March so we experienced small que's I would imagine it gets really busy in peak season so plan ahead.

Yelp
Amazing parc. Great diversity in terrain and views. From beach and ocean to Olympic stadium. See Barca play or run around. I have taken many trips here running the streets and trails as well as enjoying the many gardens. Run to the top to see the castle and cannons or take the gondola. You can get there by walking... I love running from the beach. Or you can taxi or take the metro. A must stop on your tour of Barcelona.

Yelp
Historic site on a hill with a cablecar, harbor views & a park with a castle & museums. The green Montjuïc is 213 metres and is the most famous hill in Barcelona. Because of the 1929 World Fair in Barcelona, palaces, pavilions, parks, botanical gardens & museums are here near sports complex's. We climbed thousands of steps up & down enjoying the views. We sat outdoors for lunch having sandwiches, fries & water while most had beers. There was no entrance fee, many benches to sit and there were a few metro stops nearby. We spent about :90 here.

Yelp
I'm confused why Montjuïc is a recommended spot. We walked to the top by the castle, and the views weren't very good. All of the city views were obstructed by trees. There is a cable car, but I wouldn't recommend taking and paying for it as we didn't take much time to walk to the top. We walked around for a while and saw some nice shipping containers by the harbour. It was very windy and cold in November, and there was just nothing to do. The famous magic fountain was closed. I thought this was because it is only open in the summer, but it turns out that it is usually open year-round.

Yelp
Well, the magic fountain show is here only. This hilltop neighborhood is on the site of an old Jewish cemetery, explaining its name, "Mont Juïc," which translates to "Mountain of the Jews." Standing 213 meters above the sea, the hillside is crowned by a fortress on its top and slopes steeply down to the Mediterranean. This scenic area of the city is known for its beautiful natural park with great views and superb museums. The National Art Museum of Catalonia is there having a collection of sculptures, paintings, drawings, engravings, and photography. View from the top is absolutely great. Panoramic views of both the city and the Mediterranean. I Was there at night so I did not get much chance to explore. I enjoyed the light show, strolled around a bit and called it a day. Note: if you have even the slightest interest in history, make sure to add Montjuic Castle to your Barcelona itinerary. Montjuic Castle at the hilltop ended up defending the city from many attacks in the past, including those carried out during the War of the Spanish Succession. It also served as a prison during the War of the Pyrenees and was occupied by Napoleon's troops in the early 1800s.

Yelp
Absolutely gorgeous views of the city from this green oasis. Beautiful in the early morning light looking down at the city with nothing but birdsong to keep you company. Extremely relaxing and a wonderful experience.

Yelp
Before Jamie W. and I discovered the Bunkers del Carmel on our recent visit (review: http://bit.ly/2Dloyf0), this was the definitive place to get a panoramic view of Barcelona not including the tower elevator ride at Sagrada Familia if you're lucky enough to score a pass. It's really more hill than park, and the name translates literally into "Jewish Mountain" because there was a medieval Jewish graveyard up there. Oy! Now the recreational area is known for three things. First, there are the ornate Font Màgica fountains which occurs every half hour after sunset on the weekends (review: http://bit.ly/2zCPwwr). It's worthwhile to see but bring a folding chair if you can. Second, it was the site of most of the major events of the 1992 Summer Olympics, which sparked the city's renaissance. The Estadi Olímpic is still there as well as the Olympic Ring of sporting venues. Third, it is home to several museums of note like the Fundació Joan Miró (photo: http://bit.ly/2E2RvNY), which was unfortunately closed the day we went due to the Catalan protests; botanical gardens; and historical buildings like the Palau Nacional and the Castle of Montjuïc at the top of the hill connected by its own funicular tramway (photo: http://bit.ly/2pHv4uq). We planned on taking the Port Vell Aerial Tramway to get there from the beach, but the queue was rather daunting. Instead, we took the half-hour walk from Barceloneta and climbed the dilapidated stone stairs to get to the summit of the southeastern side of the hill. From there, we saw where the aerial tram would have taken us and concluded we benefited more from the walk. We spent time staring at the panoramic views of the city (photo: http://bit.ly/2C1l5Ww) and then strolled along the main roadway, eventually finding ourselves at the metro stop that brought us back to Placa de Catalunya. Our stop at Montjuïc had been a relatively brief one compared to previous trips, but that was OK as we had a pretty full itinerary this time. It won't be our last visit here.

Yelp
Montjuïc is translated as 'Jew Hill' in medieval Catalan, or is perhaps related to the Latin phrase Mons Jovicus ('Hill of Jupiter'). Barcelona's Montjuïc is a broad shallow hill, of which eastern side is almost a sheer cliff, giving it a commanding view over the City's harbour immediately below. The top of the hill was the site of several fortifications, the latest of which (the Castell de Montjuïc) remains today. The Castell once served as a prison and on different occasions during the Spanish Civil War, both Nationalists and Republicans were executed there, each at the time when the site was held by their opponents. The Franco regime continued the tradition. Naturally wooded, the slopes of the Montjuïc were traditionally used to grow food and graze animals by the people of the neighbouring Ciutat Vella. In the 1890s, the forests were partially cleared, opening space for parklands. The site was selected to host the 1929 International Exposition (a World's Fair), for which the first large-scale construction on the hill began. The surviving buildings from this effort include the grand Palau Nacional, the Estadi Olímpic (Olympic stadium), the ornate Font Màgica fountains, and a grand staircase leading up from the foot of Montjuïc. The Poble Espanyol, a "Spanish village" of different buildings built in different styles of Spanish architecture, also survives. The roads in the slopes facing the city were also once the Montjuïc circuit Formula One racing circuit, hosting the Spanish Grand Prix on four occasions. The 1992 Summer Olympics were centered here and during our bus ride through, Gayle and I saw not only the Estadi Olímpic (with a large family event going on inside), but also the Anella Olímpica (the "Olympic Ring") of sporting venuesm including the Palau Sant Jordiindoor arena, the Institut Nacional d'Educació Física de Catalunya, a centre of sports science; the Piscines Bernat Picornell and the Piscina Municipal de Montjuïc, the venues for swimming and diving events respectively. We also admired the striking telecommunications tower, designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava. Also represented on Montjuïc are Plaça d'Espanya, the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (located at the Palau National), the Joan Miró Museum, the Funicular de Montjuïc, the Miramar Gardens, the Port Veil Aerial Tramway, and much more. Unfortunately, our visit was pretty much limited to taking the Bus Turistic through a few times, taking pictures from there, and arriving at the Joan Miró Museum just before it closed early on Sunday Afternoon. If there is a next time...

Yelp
Although Parc de Montjuïc is middle of the hill, this is sure a nice place to be. I was just making my way to the Castle Montjuïc and walked into this beautiful park. The park itself had a lot green, it was really refreshing seeing that in the city. Especially, I just travel from the place which still sort of in the early spring. It was really good for me to see those lovely plants. From the park, I could also see the city, the view just amazing. Not as brilliant as the view from the top of the castle. It was like a preview for me. I found a seat and had a short break there. Great place to make a stop and relax a bit, especially after a long walk.
google avatar

Yelp
Parc de Montjuïc will give you amazing views of Barcelona. I didn't explore much of the park but I recommend taking the air lift over from the beach it's about 11 euros one way it runs directly over the harbor from the beach direct to the parc's entrance. Note: It's only a 16 minute walk from parc de montjuïc to the Gothic Quarter and will lead you in the back way more narrow passages away from tourists.

Saira K.

Yelp
This is a park on the hill. There's a funicular station. Beautiful palm trees and lots of greenery. Peaceful place to relax.
google avatar

Brenda L.

Yelp
You can take a gondola ride up to this place, down from this place or take the public bus (like I did). I came to this place during their free admission hours. You get a nice view of the city/ocean and there are bathrooms for folks who cannot last a bus ride without having to go to the rest room during it. There's a fortress atop and some remnants that show that it was the site of the Olympic games in 1992. Bring your walking shoes there are definitely some stone roads.

Yelp
Park was very, very difficult to find. The taxi dropped off us just a few blocks away and pointed in the direction. I kept reading about two ways up: either the gondolier or many steps to hike up to the top. There were no comprehendable signs to assist one to the top, only obscure little signing pointing to other small parks and other signs we couldn't understand (even though I'm Spanish-bilingual). Many were Catala I think. So we walked and asked multiple people. Eventually we saw the gondola and trekked down (not up) to find the start. We had planned to walk up but (again) couldn't find the right path. Plus, nobody along the way, workers, people familiar, etc. were helpful. Once on the gondola, you reach the top in 15 minutes. The fortress is impressive and amazing panoramic views of the bay. The old castle/fortress is interesting and gives on a sense of what it was like trying to defend the Barcelona coast from way up high with cannons and guns. One weird thing is that they make you get a ticket only to hand it to someone 6 feet a way. It's all free adn when I asked they said it was statistics. Funny, wouldn't aturnstilee provide the same basic info. The modernization and educational exhibits rooms in some of the ancient rooms provides a unique mixture of walking through centuries-old architecture with beautiful new art exhibits and graphics providing history and similar info. (I didn't actually go into any of the exhibits due to time). We walked down a bit and then took a cab the rest of the way. Going down countless stairs took an early wear on the knees. Overall a worthwhile trip, but they need to help peopleunderstandd the park and options better.

Yelp
4.5 Magical. I found myself calling a lot of what I experienced in Barcelona 'magical.' Parc de Montjuic was no exception. Don't try and be a hero and come here with an hour or so to spare. This park is a massive land unit and you're going to want to explore as much of it as possible. Give yourself plenty of daylight to traipse across the fields and flowers. Make sure your camera/phone is charged and ready and then set off to dig into a jewel of the country. My first exciting thing to note about the park is that it's free! I couldn't believe it. With my experience teaching me that all the big tourist attractions would cost coins and time (tickets and tours for everyone!), I prepared myself for the same reality here. Nope. It's free. But with freedom, comes crowds. Being the site of the Olympic Games would already bring people. Taking away a charge for seeing it brings even more people. I decided to come here on a Saturday (not entirely crazy; I planned my visit around the fountain show). Oy. But this wasn't my first time at the rodeo, so I was prepared for the throngs of people and the disorganization of group think. First and foremost before planning a visit to the park: get a map, get your bearings and come with a plan. This isn't a space to explore idly. You have to have a plan. I researched well in advance of my visit and I knew (pro tip) to go left (against the crowd) rather than right. Wear comfortable shoes. There's lots of ground to cover, considerable hills and more-than-pedestrian climbing and not much seating from what I saw. Save the museum for last. You're going to want to go from the museum to the fountain (its own review) so make sure that it's your last stop before exiting the grounds. Prior to the museum, there are all sorts of gardens, flowers, trees, & greenery to photograph. The park is on the side of a cliff, so there are sweeping views to take in. The Olympic Village is still there so take the time to walk around it and take pictures. Depending on where you live, this may be the closest you get to seeing the games. Don't bring your whole crew here; they'll only slow you down. Come solo or with one other person. Max. Around every bend is a new art piece/sculpture to discover. I love how organically the art experience blends with the natural one. If you love green space, people watching and/or solitude amongst the masses, you have to take the time and visit Parc de Montjuic. The sheer volume of sights to see while on the grounds will give you memories and photos you'll treasure for a long time to come. Do not leave Barcelona without coming here. Seriously.

Yelp
Calm and peaceful park to relax in while hiking up or down the mountain. Som interesting flora to observe. You can get cheap souvenirs for 1 euro from the many vendors here. Best deal in Barcelona

Yelp
Great location to get gorgeous views of Barcelona. You can see Sagrada Familia from here! It's also one of the stops for the cable cars down into the city center. We didn't have time to explore the park, including the Olympic stadium and other facilities that we passed on the way up/down to the scenic spot, but it was worth a visit just to get the great postcard shot!

Yelp
montjuic park is best known for being the host of the 1992 olympic games in barcelona. it sits high atop the city, where visitors can take in magnificent 360 degree views of the city from various vista points. inside the park, you will find several museums including the fundacio miro (named for spanish artist joan miro) and the mnac (the catalonian art museum), the olympic stadium, a botanical garden, and a magic fountain (featuring light shows after dark). there are multiple ways to travel here, by bus (most tour buses include at least one stop here), by teleferic/cable car, by tram (which connects to the metro/underground), and by foot (be prepared to do some major uphill walking if you choose this option!). we actually came here on two separate occasions, the first via our tour bus, and the second via tram and cable car. the tour bus dropped us off just steps from the mnac, and we ended up parking ourselves outside the museum, oohing and ahhing at the view of this magnificent city. when we ascended via cable car, we were treated to an amazing view of the coastline at port vell as well as views of camp nou, la sagrada, and placa d'espanya, en route to the montjuic castle (the cable car's final destination). although we did not have a chance to visit the olympic stadium, we certainly enjoyed all of the other aspects of this park and would love to return it as well as other key sites inside the park. i recommend spending a full day here, possibly two, if you want to explore as much of the park as possible. although admission to the park itself is free, transportation via bus, tram and cable car come with a fee.

Gabrielle P.

Yelp
This was another one on my list of "to-do's" while I had visitors in Barcelona. It was, however, also on my list of "to-do's" in general. What it has to offer: It's got the MNAC & Miro museums, the "castle" (more like fortress), parks and fountains, the Olympic Stadium, but most importantly--an incredible view of the city (and the Mediterranean coast). On summer nights, they show movies projected on the wall of the castle, and everyone picnics and drinks in the grass before the sun sets. Definitely one of the highlights of my time abroad. There's also the Magic Fountain show in the warmer seasons, which is another great way to spend-not money, but-time. The bottom line: Montjuic is a great place to explore at a leisurely pace, and it could easily take a day of your itinerary if you let it. Pack a lunch from La Boqueria and head over to Montjuic for a picnic and incredible view. I'm going to stop now because I am getting too nostalgic for this beautiful city!
google avatar

Emma W.

Yelp
Nice park. Lots of little things to see inside the park. But it's easy to get turned around and get lost-- BUT there are maps everywhere so you can get reoriented. There is a little tram to take you from the metro to the park. Use the green line 3 - Paral-lel. Easy ride. Then there's an over head tram to get up to the castle(more like fort). Everything is down hill from the castle -- so your choice if you want to walk down. The Olympic arena is also in this parc. Also the art museum and various gardens. There's probably a whole lot of other things nestled in- but you would have to wander the park to discover them!! So fun park if you have the time and legs to go the distance!
google avatar

Darwin G.

Yelp
Eric B.'s review pretty much gives you what you need, but I emphasize how incredible of a place it is. Take the furnicular up there and there is so much up there. There's a small Joan Miro museum, parks and fountains everywhere, Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (mostly Romanesque works), and the best view of Barcelona. Next to the La Sagrada Familia, it was one of the best things I did in Barcelona. And despite that, it wasn't crowded with tourists until you get to the Museu and overlook the Magic Fountain. Make sure you go when you're in Barcelona.
google avatar

Marcel Gerard Thierry W.

Yelp
Really nice Park to walk through - even without coloured fountains. Unfortunately, they are not turned on on Sunday during winter. Instead, it is a great photo spot as the view on Barcelona is great and all the buildings are enlighted.
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
Amazing and huge park. We toured botanical gardens, Olympic stadium and pools and village then made it to castle at the top! Wonderful day for hubby and two sons (9 and 12). We took 55 bus from near Barcelona University. And got off at first stop in the park by museum of art. From here we were able to look down at ths magic fountain which was a bonus as we wanted to see ths fountain but thought it would be on a separate trip. We took 55 bus back as well. You can buy a 10 trip bus pass at metro stations- great deal as price is reduced from what you would pay to bus driver .
google avatar

Nik N.

Yelp
Got a cable car ride to the top, which felt like cheating but the views were worth it. There is a great hiking trail down to El Raval Parallel Metro station (hike about 60%, streets 40%) but the street way is steep if you dont want to hike or have your bad knee travel companion with you.
google avatar

Nick L.

Yelp
It's free which is nice. There are many tourist attractions that have a fee of some sort. I say it's free but you still have to get to the parc. If you are going to the castle then there's a cable car ride to get you up there, not super pricey but a nice ride nonetheless, especially if you can get a car to yourselves. The parc is a nice place to walk around and while away some time. We spent most of our time at the castle...
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
This park is absolutely enormous and quite a hike on hills. The park has beautiful flowers and vegetation throughout. Getting up to the top to see the castle takes quite a long time and effort. Make sure you leave enough time (at least 3 hours) to walk up there and enjoy. I was told that the castle was not very far, and that there was a cable car that took people there - sadly never found either of those and never made it up to see the castle. Though I consider it a personal failure, it is a nice challenge and hike and time outdoors
google avatar

Megan N.

Yelp
If you like to be active during your holidays like I do, you can get some calories burned and enjoy this beautiful hilly park as well. We were lodged in gothic quarter and walked to Montjuic by crossing on the other side of Las Ramblas. We took some munchies and bottle water with us. We passed by beautiful Miramar and enjoyed the manicured garden as we passed through the parc and finished off at the Montjuic castle close to the last stop of Teleferic. We took the Teleferic ride for some great views of Barcelona and finished off at the bottom of the hill. The whole trip with all our stops took around 3 hours. This way we saved around 4 Euros on the roundtrip Teleferic and watched a whole bunch of beautiful sites on our way to the top.
google avatar

Sharon E.

Yelp
this is a great park to visit and get a stunning view of the city on one side, and the sea on the other. Montjuic is home to a number of noteworthy places to visit including the Castell, the Joan Miro museum, the Olympic stadium, a botanical garden, and various parks and green spaces. Oh - and a great looking cemetery too. How to get there? well, you can walk thru Poble Sec, and just walk up; you can take the Funicular, or you can take the bus. I'm sure you can take a car or a taxi too... But that kinda defeats the purpose of hike just outside of the city, yet inside the city (if that's what you're looking for... that's what I'm usually looking for).
google avatar

Ermelinda C.

Yelp
Definitely a must do, if you have an extra half day in Barcelona - amazing experience!

Laura Z.

Yelp
Coolest thing I did in Barcelona. I thought the cable car was fun. Amazing to see the scenic views and lush dense foliage of the trees in the distance. No lines which was nice, still touristy though.

Lauretta L.

Yelp
Whether you have an hour or several to kill, Montjuic is the place to do it. Our place was a 15 minute walk from Montjuic and it was a beautiful sunny day, so we got quite lucky. Montjuic gives you a scenic view from the time you begin walking down the long street toward it and even after you reach the top. There is a nice terrace where you can enjoy an aerial view of Placa Espanya, or you can do what I did and stand (or more like teeter) on the top of the balcony for an epic picture. To fully take in the architectural beauty of MNAC, I suggest walking around and seeing the back of it. From there, you can venture on to the rest of the grounds and if you're up for it, wander your way to Barceloneta.

Nat D.

Yelp
I would highly recommend this place. If you come take note. It will be very windy at the top at some of the look out points. Bring a coat and scarf and also if your ears are sensitive bring cotton to put in them. Wear comfy shoes and clothes for walking as you will be doing a lot of this. If you really want to explore you can go all day. Please just don't sit at the top near the museum. Take the time to walk around. There is so much to see. The higher you go I think the more beautiful the view is. If you can bring a back pack with some water/wine and snacks. There are little trucks you can stop and eat at. Pizza, salads, ice cream, cafe con leche. You name it they got it. I just think it would be more fun to have a small picnic. There are buses you can catch or taxis to go to certain areas if need be. We did not try the tram but there is one that goes across the park that looks pretty amazing. Two different times there were people in them screaming as they passed by so once you are in there's no getting off until the end. Make sure you are okay with these types of rides. Check it out I am sure you won't be disappointed in this park.
google avatar

Sar P.

Yelp
definitely do this - the architecture is amazing and try to do it at the end of the day so you can enjoy the sunset and take the bus back down! its scenic from every angle - mountains, city, ocean!
