CITAN Hostel

I’d heard about this hostel a long time ago and really wanted to try it. It’s famous for its bar, music, and community vibe, and I can see why. I really liked the atmosphere downstairs and the friendly, welcoming staff. Unfortunately, the property itself feels quite old and hasn’t been updated in a while. I stayed on the upper bunk, which was extremely close to the pipes and fixtures. I could literally touch them. It didn’t feel clean at all, and honestly, it was a bit disgusting knowing those areas probably can’t be properly cleaned. The overall industrial-style (工業風) design might look trendy in photos, but in reality it feels cold and uncomfortable. The exposed pipes, dark lighting, and rough finish make it far less relaxing than I expected. I also noticed that the duvets weren’t properly washed between guests; they were just aired out for a few hours before being reused. I’m honestly surprised there haven’t been hygiene issues yet. Considering the price, I expected something newer and cleaner. You have to make your own bed, and the duvet cover only covers one side, leaving the rest exposed. It’s quite average overall. I didn’t sleep well, maybe because I didn’t feel comfortable. Next time, I’ll choose a place that feels more private and well-maintained, even if it means missing out on the bar scene.

We loved this hostel!! Stayed in a private room for 6 nights, and while the price wasn’t the cheapest (it’s Tokyo after all), I couldn’t complain about the service of the staff, cleanliness of the room, and overall vibe/energy of the whole place. My partner loved the coffee downstairs at the cafe and the fact that it was close to all the convenience stores (Lawson, 7-11, family mart). Toilets/showers were cleaned everyday and was spotless. While the location wasn’t as close to the city as others, we actually preferred the quieter suburb. It’s sooo close to train stations and only about 12-14 minutes away from Ueno station (which takes you straight to the airport). Overall, we would highly recommend!

This is the first hostel I have stayed in in Tokyo and it has set the bar super high!! It’s incredibly clean and comfortable, equipped with everything you need like lockers, lights and plug sockets next to the bed. It’s like luxury! Oh and the staff all speak English and are extremely friendly and helpful. Ask them anything and they will give you the best tips on what to do, where to buy travel cards etc. Perhaps the only drawback is that It’s not social at all from my experience but I think that’s common for all hostels in Tokyo - it does have a common social area though which is probably the best place to go if you’re a solo traveller.

Loved my stay at CITAN Hostel. The atmosphere was modern yet cozy, with a great social vibe downstairs at the café and bar. The rooms and bathrooms were very clean, and the staff were welcoming and helpful. The location near Ningyocho Station made getting around super convenient. Only small downside was some loud roommates, but overall a great experience — would definitely stay again.

The hostel has a clean and smelless bathroom. Humidifier placing in the room helps a lot to create a comfortable environment. The most important thing is that the Japanese workers there can speak fluent English, which is completely the opposite outside of the hostel. They recommended me to amazing affordable local Japanese restaurants as well👍🏻

Private room is honestly perfect. An affordable option for those who appreciate being around other travellers but still want privacy. Good coffe and friendly staff. Only downside is the washing machine is old and a bit stinky. Also they didn’t change our sheets, we stayed for 8 nights (probably would’ve done it if we asked).

Cool place with friendly staff. Our room had high ceiling, and a big window with a good view of the city street. The bathroom and toilets are shared, the building was quiet and we had a great stay.

Many trains station around!, Great food! The beers made it there are insane! The staff is really great! Have enough space to cook your on meals and hang out with others. I’d recommend you (if you like IPA BEER), drink the 7 heaven ;)

The hostel was honestly super clean! The staff in the front were really friendly and talked to me when I first arrived. They gave me recommendations on good food places to check out around the Hostel. My shower experience was great because the bathroom and showers were also very clean. Would recommend!

Great hostel that I'm sad I didn't get to stay longer and experience more of. The staff is very nice and well-versed in English, the check-in/check-out process is very smooth, and the beds are very comfortable. They seem to be popular for their coffee, but I didn't have the chance to try it. There are 4 different train stations right by the hostel so getting around Tokyo is very easy from this place. I was almost late for my flight because I overslept, but there was a Narita Airport express at one of the stations, so I didn't miss my flight. I did, however, drunkenly leave my hat and socks which someone took when I checked in the morning. Don't be like me, always take care of your own belongings. (and whoever took my Supreme hat I would like it back).

Stopped here and got lucky when we had issues with our Airbnb. Super friendly staff who were willing to accommodate us at the very last moment. Incredibly clean, welcoming environment/atmosphere, and comfy beds! Dare I say, better than most of the Airbnb homes we stayed at in Japan.

This place is lovely and nicer than lots of hotels. We stayed in a king six private room which was very large with a big window that got nice light and stayed nice and cool and quiet. The staff were very friendly and the bar and coffee shop downstairs make a great addition and have full menus. Each floor has bathrooms which are also super clean with nice organic products for you to use free of charge. All in all would definitely stay here again and will recommend to friends.
