The 8 Best Hostels in Tokyo (Updated 2025)

"I experienced CITAN as a boutique, hipster-friendly hostel in Nihonbashi: the seven-story building with 130 beds is kept clean, the showers have great water pressure, and the first-floor common area is a relaxed hangout with a good kitchen. The pod-style beds have curtains, reading lights and decent mattresses, and the building houses Berth Coffee on the first floor plus a bar and restaurant in the basement that often fills up on weekends (sometimes with a DJ)." - Matthew Kepnes

Private room is honestly perfect. An affordable option for those who appreciate being around other travellers but still want privacy. Good coffe and friendly staff. Only downside is the washing machine is old and a bit stinky. Also they didn’t change our sheets, we stayed for 8 nights (probably would’ve done it if we asked).

It’s near the station and has a Lawson convenience near it. The common areas and bathrooms are clean. There is a washing area for only ¥300. It’s a good place for solo travelers. Thankfully, I had very respectful roommates who observed silence and cleanliness. I stayed in an all-girl room.

The staff were always very helpful, and they provided just about everything I needed for a comfortable stay. They also have good food available whenever I didn't want to go searching for it. Additionally, the location was ideal, it is right in the middle of Tokyo and is near to a subway station and currency exchange. I felt relieved that I could come back after each exhausting day, assured that I would have a shower and some privacy.

One of the best hostels I ve ever been to, definitely going there again. Great staff, great social activities, very clean and well air conditioned. Bathrooms are very nice as well, even shampoo and soap provided. They have all the facilities you might need. Just great! Only thing is it's a bit far away from the "party area" in Tokyo but with a bike it's like 20 minutes

I recently stayed at CITAN Hostel in Tokyo for five nights, and it was easily one of the best hostel experiences I’ve had. From the moment I arrived, I was impressed by the warm hospitality and efficiency of the staff—they were always quick to assist with any requests, making my stay smooth and hassle-free. Cleanliness & Comfort One of the standout aspects of CITAN is its impeccable cleanliness. The dorms, bathrooms, and common areas were always spotless, and the attention to hygiene made the experience even more enjoyable. The beds are incredibly comfortable, with privacy curtains, individual reading lights, and ample storage space, ensuring a good night’s rest after a long day in Tokyo. The overall ambiance is calm and cozy, striking the perfect balance between social and private. Great Location & Accessibility Another major advantage of CITAN is its convenient location. It’s within walking distance of three subway stations, making it easy to get around Tokyo efficiently. Whether you're heading to major attractions or just exploring local neighborhoods, the connectivity is a huge plus. Basement Bar & Atmosphere One of my favorite parts of the hostel was the basement bar and café, which has a fantastic selection of food and drinks. A special shoutout to the bar chef, あおい, whose potato salad and fried chicken were absolutely delicious! The weekend DJ nights add a lively touch, creating a fun but not overly chaotic social scene. It’s the perfect place to relax, meet fellow travelers, or simply enjoy a great meal with good music. Overall Verdict CITAN Hostel offers a perfect blend of comfort, cleanliness, and a vibrant atmosphere at a reasonable price. Whether you’re a solo traveler or visiting with friends, it’s a fantastic base for exploring Tokyo. I’d definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a top-quality hostel experience in the city!

this hostel is amazing the rooms are clean and tidy the lockers are easy too use and the staff are incredibly friendly. the location is great but after the last train at midnight it can be difficult to get back without spending money on a taxi however before midnight it’s great 20mins from shinjuku and 30 from shibuya

I loved the place but in my opinion they can invest a bit more in making it a bit more comfortable. If you get the bunk bed with like air vents on top you’re screwed because I’m 157 cm and it was uncomfortable. So imagine a tall guy European or American trying to stand up on the bed or sit impossible. The place is good they have a bar down but def super hard to have a social vibe which is mostly Japan. If you’re doing your plan go in and out great. Use Hostelworld chat to make friends but don’t stay there to hang out is like jot the best place. But affordable and you pay the price for what you get

I stayed at CITAN for 3 separate occasions while I was traveling for two weeks throughout Japan (separated by a few out-of-Tokyo excursions). This was easily one of the better hostels I stayed in, with the staff being extremely helpful & kind. I stayed in an 8 person mixed co-ed room, and the rooms were nice enough. Each bed had a series of curtains that enveloped each bed, as well as a locker, which unfortunately wasn't large enough to fit a backpack in (imo, only downside of the room, but also then you don't hear people fiddling with the lockers all night). The amenities were super convenient, with easy access to a bar for socializing, and access to early morning coffee to help start the day. They offer baggage holding, bike rentals, and free umbrella rentals for those rainy days. The only down side was the kitchen itself was very small, and the common room was small as well. However, with the rest of the space still usable by hostel guests (bar & coffee area), I had no qualms with it. I'd recommend this place to anyone who enjoys staying in hostels!

Yelp
The hostel was honestly super clean! The staff in the front were really friendly and talked to me when I first arrived. They gave me recommendations on good food places to check out around the Hostel. My shower experience was great because the bathroom and showers were also very clean. Would recommend!

Yelp
Great hostel that I'm sad I didn't get to stay longer and experience more of. The staff is very nice and well-versed in English, the check-in/check-out process is very smooth, and the beds are very comfortable. They seem to be popular for their coffee, but I didn't have the chance to try it. There are 4 different train stations right by the hostel so getting around Tokyo is very easy from this place. I was almost late for my flight because I overslept, but there was a Narita Airport express at one of the stations, so I didn't miss my flight. I did, however, drunkenly leave my hat and socks which someone took when I checked in the morning. Don't be like me, always take care of your own belongings. (and whoever took my Supreme hat I would like it back).

Yelp
Stopped here and got lucky when we had issues with our Airbnb. Super friendly staff who were willing to accommodate us at the very last moment. Incredibly clean, welcoming environment/atmosphere, and comfy beds! Dare I say, better than most of the Airbnb homes we stayed at in Japan.

Yelp
This place is lovely and nicer than lots of hotels. We stayed in a king six private room which was very large with a big window that got nice light and stayed nice and cool and quiet. The staff were very friendly and the bar and coffee shop downstairs make a great addition and have full menus. Each floor has bathrooms which are also super clean with nice organic products for you to use free of charge. All in all would definitely stay here again and will recommend to friends.
