citizenM Rotterdam (Rotterdam, South Holland) 5 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"When people talk about Dutch design they’re generally thinking small — quirky furniture, innovative products, whimsical graphics and installations. But in hospitality what’s more relevant is the large-scale Dutch design philosophy: the efficiency, the economy, the canny cleverness that allows this most densely populated of countries to tackle its geographic challenges and live together harmoniously. CitizenM is, in that sense, Dutch hospitality design distilled to its purest essence — and the CitizenM Hotel Rotterdam shows what this enterprising chain can do with the home advantage." - Tablet Hotels

We spent 4 nights here, and used Rotterdam as a base to visit Gouda, Delft and the Hague. We had an east facing room, that has great views of the harbour area. ||Rooms are spotlessly clean, never had waits for elevators, and staff were all very friendly and helpful. And the location is great for staying in Rotterdam, withe Rotterdam Blaak subway and train stations across the street. Really, you can walk to all the main areas of Rotterdam.||||CitizenM is very affordable, which makes it a great value. Sometimes budget hotels are awful, but we greatly enjoyed our stay here. However the lower cost does come with one negative: the room is quite small. There is very little space for unpacking clothing, and if you are 2 people with a lot of luggage, it will be a tight fit. They save space by a unique setup for the bed, which is surrounded by walls on 3 sides. The bed is very large for a hotel bed, which I appreciated, but I think people with mobility issues might find it hard getting in and out of the bed. Also the toilet is surrounded by an opaque glass wall, so you aren't fully visible, but privacy isn't ideal.||||I would certainly stay here again. It has a hip, young feel, with lots of tech (eg. controlling lights, blinds, A/C via an app). That may or not appeal to some.

Hotel’s location is superb, within walking distance of the river bank and popular shopping avenues. The room is small because it is Europe, but designed in the way that everything fits well and you don’t feel crowded or inconvenient. Smart technology allows you to control everything from an iPad. So it is compact but efficient for solo travelers in particular. BT the way, nice staff and good/clean reception area dubbed as a living room for socializing.

Teeny tiny room, just enough space to get dressed and sleep. You want for nothing. The location of the hotel is the real start and made it well worth it. If more room is needed, there are plenty of comfy, well designed community spaces where you can read, work, socialize, etc in at the hotel.

We stayed at CitizenM Rotterdam for the second time, and we enjoyed it even more! This time we came for my birthday and without me knowing, they had arranged all sorts of surprises with the help of my sister, from a card in the room to a birthday breakfast, which made my birthday perfect. Both our times at this hotel have been great and I would recommend it to all my family and friends.

We love staying at citizenm hotels as they are the perfect room size, have great amenities and the staff is always super kind. We especially loved the bike rental service. And the chocolate truffle cake, that was incredible.

I paid €145 per night w/o breakfast. The service was very friendly, and both the large lobby and the bike rental were convenient. Rooms on the back side of the hotel are quiet — much appreciated. However, I wasn’t too happy with the room’s aesthetic and interior design. The shower cubicle and sink combo in the entrance area felt like one of the cheapest, most plastic-looking solutions I’ve seen in a hotel. On-site parking is reasonably priced, but you can find cheaper options on the nearby riverside street if you prefer.

Absolutely great! Very very nice hotel, perfect central position near the cubic houses and Market hall. Beautiful view from the large windows right to the side of the bed. We could choose the floor and the preferred view iPad provided to control blinds, shades, tv and lights Self check in and out, great professional service, the staff was friendly and smiling Large breakfast buffet, stylish common rooms Great experience!

Our rating of 5 stars is truly for the team at this location, who went above and beyond to remedy some issues during our stay, none of which were their fault. Their demeanor, kindness and prowess was excellent, hence our rating. They were an amazing example of stellar customer service leadership and should be commended by Marriott management for this. They all worked together well and moved swiftly to serve customers, and provided great recommendations for restaurants and attractions. ||This was our first stay at CitizenM, now owned by Marriott. Cute, trendy and stylish layout, but the rooms are oh-so-small. While we love the tiny/efficient similar chains like Motel One and Social Hub, CM just takes the tiny thing a bit too far if more than one person will be in the room. FYI, we are two active fogies who travel with only one suitcase each. And the pod toilet/shower (one pod in this location, not two separate pods like Schipfol) leaves you with minimal privacy and zero sound proofing while using the toilet. (Luckily there are public restrooms off the lobby, lol. )You will also have the "signature" bed layout, which means that bed has walls on three sides, so one of you will be crawling over your significant other to access the bed. But the bed is comfortable! It should be noted that when searching hotels by filter on several major search sites, this hotel shows as having A/C (a non-negotiable for me) but does NOT have A/C, but rather an alternative cooling system. Did it suffice during the heat wave....eventually, but if you really need and want that cold blast of A/C, it falls short. It is similar to a swamp cooler system, and you will feel that moisture in your room. On really hot days, you need to keep it running full tilt. That being said,it worked in the end, and the team was super proactive and helpful in assigning us a cooler room location with some shade to make sure I didn't melt. (Rooms with the old harbor view windows will trend hotter.) ||In addition, our TV had some glitches, and had to be reset by staff members everytime we wanted to turn it on. This was clearly not their fault, and they were lovely about addressing this issue, even offering a new room, which we declined. ||Here are the "Positives" for this location:||Excellent and proactive top notch leadership and staff members.|Competitive pricing for Rotterdam options.|Beautiful location at the old harbor with many cute restaurants nearby on the water.|Conventient location directly across the street from Rotterdam Blaak Train/Tram station, easy connection to Rotterdam Central.|Small safe in room.|Multiple security locks on room door.|Keycard access needed beyond lobby areas.|Across the street from the Market Hall with tons of food vendors/coffee/grocery store.|Rotterdam Saturday market is across the street next to Market Hall. Meat, fish, cheese, food stalls, flowers, clothes, etc. |Quick walk to the river, longer stroll to Erasmus Bridge for active folks. |Breakfast is available for a $.|Nice bar/restaurant onsite.|English speaking staff.|Easy automated self check in and check out, although staff is always there to assist.||*See separate review for CitizenM Schipfol location

Yelp
I always enjoy staying here, I think I've spent 90+ nights at the Rotterdam location over the last 8 years. I also really enjoyed the Glasgow and Amsterdam locations, Shoreditch has been the only one I didn't like (lounges too small for the number of guests and inattentive staff). There's a lovely friendly atmosphere at this location, thanks to the predominantly female staff. The lounges are spacious and there's plenty of desk space for working. Beds are super comfy, the bar and canteen are pleasant (thanks to the staff) in the evening and the location couldn't be better.

Yelp
This hotel is absolutely fantastic. For reasonable prices you can get a great room and even better service. Professional, young people are always eager to help you out. What truly sets the hotel apart though is the design. It's a place of creativity tastefully packed in a more modern style. Everytime I come to the hotel I just feel the creative ideas flowing through me, it's absolutely fantastic. In general a younger crowd gathers at the hotel and I guess that's also what they are shooting for. In my opinion, they did an excellent job. It's located right next to the train station and the city center so for all travellers passing by, it's a good hotel to spend a night at to explore the city on foot.

Yelp
This hotel is supposed to be very high-tech. Yet it is very low working, too. It starts right away when entering and trying to use the elevator. It obviously waits for the room key to bring it's users to their respective floors - but the sequence remains a mystery (first key, then button; first button then key; key and button simultaneously?). There is no explanation whatsoever and it is just a waste of time. Secondly the check in is self-service. But also their is an employee assisting. This is really weird and annoying - wastes time again and probably doesn't save the hotel any money either. Up in the room, it all starts again. There is a tablet to control all the settings of the room. It is used for light, the blinds, music and TV. It is also dead, DEAD, slow. This really is just useless tech. Also the alarm clock function doesn't work. Better not depend on it. The free WiFi is great at 25Mbits up and down speed. The hardware in the room is really good though. It is all very clean and neatly set. All the "citizenM says" stuff is obnoxious but oh well. The bed is spacious and comfortable. The bed is right on the window with beautiful views. The shower is tiny but alright. The sink in the middle of the room is weird. There is not enough space to put the standard utensils of one let alone two people. It is very quiet in the rooms and also with the blinds shut it is quite dark, which allows for a good sleep. In the morning my water pressure was so low, that showering was almost impossible. When i called the reception they were really attentive and friendly, yet still unable to help. For 2 hours that is. They were obviously working on it right away, but this really didn't help me. I don't know if that was just a fluke or if it happens frequently. The time to resolve this issue was far too long. They compensated me with a few goodies from their take-away, which was fair enough. Breakfast is overpriced. There is not a lot to choose from. One kind of cereal. Two kinds of cheese. Four types of jams. Orange juice and water. Awesome Croissants and coffee though. Sadly the bar isn't really a dedicated breakfast place. Service is in over it's head and slow. All in all a neat place to stay with great beds. Probably a little tight with two people, but also very low price compared to the standard rates in Rotterdam. They have many issues to work on to make the stay an all-round pleasant one...

Yelp
Smart hotel. Centrally located. Very comfortable beds. I wish they had body lotion in the room.

Yelp
At first I was impressed with the sleek, electronic, automated "noir" of this hotel. The automated check-in, iPad controlled room (curtains, heat, lighting, television, etc.), and pod-like design are amusing. The breakfast has a lot of good, fresh, simple options. After three nights here, I have noticed its failings; the sheets aren't soft, the food options at the bar are essentially pre-packaged microwaveable meals; there isn't really a front desk attendant or concierge - instead an "ambassador"; the housekeeping service comes around too early; they're skimpy on the products (no lotion, robes, or washcloths) and then of course the electronic iPad quirks - my heat wouldn't adjust, the television randomly came off and on, and the worst...on two occasions (one at 3 am in the morning and the other while I was in the shower at 9 am) the staff banged on the door because they "were receiving a fire alarm" (nothing audible or blinking in the room). While the design and concept are fresh, I think they will quickly age and then this will be hostile-quality, student accommodations. There is construction on the road leading to the main entrance of the hotel, which is tucked inside a plaza. The GPS takes you to what looks like a dead end, but with some persistence you can still arrive there to drop-off your bags. Afterwards, head to a nearby garage, which is €22 overnight and a 5 minute walk or risk street parking free until 9 am. The location is great near the Markt (which is fantastic) and the free porn and wifi are greatly appreciated.

Yelp
We're used to renting via Airbnb but when checking out hotels, I noticed this one was cheaper than most of the airbnb's AND looked amazing online. It didn't lie! Superfriendly staff, easy check in, small but perfectly designed room, free rental bike... Amazing what you get for the price of 72euros per night for two persons. It is even located ideally, everything in walking distance. Next time I am doing a citytrip, I will check if there's a citizenM to stay at! O and a plus: the room temperature, lights etc are controlled by an iPad: fancy!

Yelp
Trendy hotel for the business traveller, doesn't quite accommodate big families the rooms are small yet very functional. It is close to Rotterdam Blaak train station right across the street and market. Also quite a few restaurants at walking distance.

Yelp
If House of Bols, Heineken and IKEA got together and made a hotel..... I am a huge fan of the Citizen M concept and once you have tried them for yourself I'm quite confident you probably will be too. They specialise in cheap, no-fuss but chic good quality self service hotels where you can check yourself in and out 24 hour. There is however always someone around to help but you don't have to stand around with jetlag and heavy bags and ding a bell to get to your room. They have funky colours and artwork and a living room/ lounge space and 24 hour bar and shop/buffet to maximise the wall to wall comfy bed in your room. The room is controlled by a tablet and you have custom mood lighting and music. There is a black out blind again great for jetlag and watching one of their many movies. I even love their shower gel. You have a zesty one to wake up the early bird and a sultry one for the night owl. I love both. This is the second time I've stayed at citizen M, Rotterdam and Glasgow, and I find it top quality and great value.

Yelp
I've stayed at the CitizenM Rotterdam 4 times this year and it's a great hotel for the price. The rooms are extremely clean, great movie selection, you get a free drink and the staff are super helpful. Oh, the the showers are FANTASTIC. It's always a pleasure getting to stay over.

Yelp
I stayed there for one night with my boyfriend, and we loved it! Would gladly stay there again, and would be eager to try the other citizenM locations in other cities. Perhaps we are the exact target demographic for this hotel, because we laughed at all the little jokes, funny bits of text scattered in odd places throughout, e.g. the hairdryer is stored in a little sack, printed with "ssshhh... the hairdryer is sleeping." Anyway citizenM Rotterdam was just what we needed: reasonable price, creative and interesting vibe, super-comfortable bed, great location, yummy breakfast, and really really friendly staff. Seriously, all the staff who we interacted with were really nice and over-the-top helpful, with local recommendations, with helping us look up our train information online and print it out for us, etc etc. The bed is HUGE and very comfy. The room is small. So the idea of this hotel is that you should feel welcome to use the public areas of the hotel. The lounge/bar area is set up with tables where you can work on your laptop, and cozy seating areas with couches, TV's, and books. We would have been happy to spend more time relaxing in this lounge but our visit was too short for much of that. The bathroom is compact but we found it to be very nice, with a luxurious shower. We had no problems with the water as some guests reported. The bathroom does have a translucent wall, but you cannot see through it at all from the room. In fact the toilet/bathroom area seemed very well-designed, especially so that the person using the toilet gets enough privacy, unlike some other "modern" hotels I have visited where they seem to think that lovers sharing a hotel room want to watch each other use the toilet! We did notice a few glitches with the high-tech system for controlling lights, etc in the room. The window curtain and blind are controlled electronically by switches on the wall and also from the tablet controller. In both cases the curtain and blind were often slow to respond, leading to confusing and repeated pressing of the buttons, waiting for something to happen. But in the end we managed to get it working. Regarding the lights, we actually never managed to do something as simple as turn off the overhead lights while leaving the bedside lamp on. At the time we found this humorous and silly considering that everything was supposed to be so high-tech. But I could see how it could be annoying if you stayed for several nights and if you really needed that bedside lamp. We had fun playing with the colored mood lighting. Overall we had a lovely stay at this hotel and would highly recommend it.
