I give this institution of Learning the highest accolades possible. This tiny edifice compared to the main campus has impacted my life in such a positive way. I earned a science degree in Biotechnology. I learned to believe in myself again. I met so many Educator who were willing to always go the extra mile for Us (the students).
Then there is the Building. It's mere existence is a testimony to a community of People of Color and so many Cultures who demanded and received a tool that would help Their future compete Academically, Politically, and Socially. I met personally, Dr. Jackson, A Bayview Resident, Activist, an a co- founder of The Oakdale Campus. She is featured on the mural that graces the entrance to this historical Campus. She was still advocating for the Cancer Victims of Bayview Hunters Point.
Then you have the friendly, helpful, lovable, knowledgeable,. Dean Bynum. Right in Dean. The politics he has to deal with as well as making the two campuses run smoothly. He couldn't do it without Ms. Marlene Walker. She is a super star in her own right. I will always remember Ms. Cynthia, Mrs. Mila, The Librarian and all the other Community support groups who had offices inside the Oakdale campus. These Members of the community provide job training ( security Guard Card, etc) for the Residents. There are scholarships available, free food and clothing. Just a ton of resources.
But all good things come to and end. And with Gentrification upon the community eventually what once was provided as a compromise for the Sewer System being relocated to that side of town ( as opposed to the Sunset District $), and now a dying Institution ( because no one attends, will soon be repurposed trendy office space.
Good Bye . I enjoyed you and took full advantage.
