Google
Grabbed a grilled cheese, some hash browns, and a coffee for breakfast and everything was solid. The food came out fast and tasted fresh. The grilled cheese was toasted just right and the hash browns were golden. Coffee was hot and they kept it coming. I will definitely stop in again.

Google
Top destination, Was seated right away, Jamie went above and beyond, the food tasted great came out fast. This is an essential site if you come to Kansas City Missouri.

Google
Atmosphere and staff were fantastic… Kudos to Jaime and Adria tag team servers … Friendly and welcoming … easy to get here either walking driving or free streetcar

Google
The 12-inch pancake was quite an undertaking. I could not finish the whole thing. I honestly would have liked it a little more cooked, but that's just a personal preference. My husband really liked his country fried steak and eggs with gravy. It was also a huge portion. It is your classic breakfast diner you find in any city: reasonable prices, friendly staff, and plenty of food. I will definitely be back.

Google
An old fashioned diner experience. We had dreamy cinnamon rolls, a tasty meat loves omelet, and a delicious bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. Great prices. Locals were stopping by for food to go, so that is always a great sign.

Google
Overall the experience was pretty good but the food was a little underwhelming. My breakfast scramble wasn’t exactly scrambled together so much as just kinda tossed together. It lacked any kind of excitement. Not bad, just kinda lame, especially considering the long wait and high price.

Google
I have been going to City Diner for over 30 years...I am a sucker for a good local spot and this one fits that description to a T...I used to go on the weekends from time to time when I lived in the suburbs ( a 30-45 min drive ) but a few years back I moved to the River Market and was only 4 blocks away...Now I live downtown so only maybe 3/4 of a mile away...I go 3-4 times a month and even order delivery when busy with work...I am also lucky in that both of my kids love the place so when they are around we usually hit it for Saturday breakfast...We always sit at the counter ( for the true diner experience ) and the service has always been 100%...I am glad we have the City Diner and I am glad I taught my kids ( 22/Daughter and 26/Son ) to appreciate a good local greasy spoon kind of joint...See ya this Saturday !!!

Google
Old school diner! Lots of menu options for breakfast and lunch. Everything was very good. Servers were very attentive and helpful!

Yelp
Always a busy spot! Good food, great prices and an easy stop before you start your day in the river market.

Yelp
I didn't love it. But I liked it a lot. Decent food with a nice vibe. Service was spotty and uninterested.
google avatar

Yelp
It's cheap food but very greasy. The service is quick and kind. The seats are old and cracking but the small diner vibe was perfect.

Yelp
Visited for breakfast on a Friday morning; sometimes, you're hungry for just some basic diner food. Upon entering, a server on the other side of the room told us to find any open table that's clean. When we got seated, our server was there right away ready to take our drink orders. I ordered the breakfast tacos, and my friend ordered the biscuits and gravy. The food was delivered quickly, and portions are fair for the price. The biscuits and gravy were bland and there wasn't much sausage in the gravy. The breakfast tacos were fine. If you're looking for a creative brunch menu, or the best biscuits and gravy, this is not the place for you. I think some effort could be put into a few menu items to make them better, but when compared to local no-frills diners, I think City Diner provides a satisfactory experience.

Michael A.

Yelp
Very clean, bright and pleasant. Quick service. Omelette was very good--with local Italian sausage.

Yelp
I stopped here for breakfast to start my day because it was close to my hotel. It's a generic diner in a great location with some parking. The menu is normal except for the the Bob special. The decor is kitch with generic tables and chairs. The place is nothing fancy but it works. My service was off because I was forgotten about. Service was lacking but the food was great so no stars were harmed on this visit. Ok listen up people, the Bob special is very unique because it's a big biscuit topped with country fried steak, hash browns, scrambled eggs smothered in country gravy. OMG the Bob special looked amazing piping hot to my table. This was absolutely delicious by the way. The hash browns were golden crisp, the country fried steak was golden crispy and three times thicker than the crap in my city. The scrambled eggs were fluffy and the abundance of thick creamy country gravy like a volcano erupted on this mountain of food was so good. Overall this was a great choice for a breakfast spot and on my trips, I spend hours researching the area for the best possible restaurants and this one hit it out of the park, great job.

Yelp
Went to city diner to have brunch and walk through vintage market days in city market across the street. The location of the diner is perfect for a weekend brunch and city market combo! The food is very good and it's a cute small diner the kind of place you would see an old man in suspenders at the breakfast bar! The menu isn't large but very good food and good service!

Yelp
Basic old-school diner with an emphasis on breakfast. Yesterday was only my 3rd or so visit, which is odd since I used to live in the neighborhood. I was craving Biscuits and Gravy and ended up stopping here. The biscuits were very standard and cold and topped and although the gravy was hot and creamy, it lacked any substantial amount of meat crumbles. My side plate of hash browns were crispy. Service was efficient and pleasant but not very engaging. I love that these type of places exist and they serve a purpose, basic greasy food with a quick turn-around.

Yelp
I discovered this small diner in KC, slightly removed from downtown. Nothing fancy, yet a pleasant community diner where the servers warmly greet you the second you walk through the door. Service was great, as was the food. The menu has many choices. What stood out to me was the atmosphere. Table talk was peacefully spoken. An elderly man walks in with his cane and is directed to his favorite table, as the waitress asks, "The usual?" Background music softly playing "Let It Be" - Beatles. Peaceful and pleasant experience... Step back in time with this little gem!

Yelp
The first time here. I was looking for a diner in the downtown area to meet a friend for breakfast. Of course, I turned to Yelp! City Diner appears to have been here a bit. I'm not sure how long, but it seems like a long time. The place is clean and cool tables in the back room. Loved the stool diner top but didn't have 2 chairs together when we walked in. Very quick service and a lengthy menu when we got there mid day, so all options were open, but we stuck with the breakfast menu. Pro tip: if you sit next to the windows. You need to be prepared to see a bumper or two wizz past you. Wow kinda thought a car was coming thru the glass a time or two, but you get used to it. LOL My buddy got the classic it had 2 or 3 eggs, English muffin hash browns, and bacon. All looked good. The bacon was surprising it was think and crispy, not greasy floppy like most restaurant bacon. I opted for the suggested country fried steak meal. Also, came with 2 eggs, hash browns, and English muffin. They had cholula available: score!!! Steak was thick and tasty, not too much breading. Hash browns were perfect little crunchy, not soggy nor burnt. Good coffee, good food food service and food conversation equals a great day. Thanks, City Diner. we will be back.

Yelp
Service was fantastic! My server was joyful and spoke to everyone like they were a friend. The food was excellent! I had a bacon omelette. Great corner diner with old feel aesthetics. Definitely stop in and get some breakfast!

Yelp
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, or so your mom always told ya. Well if you are searching for an all American breakfast that checks all the boxes with a big dose of nostalgia then look no further than the classic City Diner. Located on the fringes of the City Market in River Market proper this quintessential diner is only open until 2pm so come hungry early. The menu features all kinds of normal diner staples that are all reasonably priced and over portioned, in true diner fashion you are not going to leave hungry. The last time I stopped into City Diner I was craving a gooey egg, a crispy hash brown and a savory piece of sausage and my breakfast delivered all of those. I opted for the Italian breakfast sausage option which was new to me but had a lot more spice than the regular sausage patty. It also had a more irregular shape which was fun. My over easy eggs had a runny yolk that made me smile, especially once they were the object of desire for my rye toast to dunk itself into. Also it is to be said that everything here on this visit was seasoned immaculately, nothing over salted which is rare for diners on occasion. Overall, I came with a certain picture of a diner breakfast plate in mind and what I was served was exactly that and nothing more. No bells and whistles here but overall good eats so, if you're not expecting frills but you are expecting flavor then hop on into the City Diner.

Yelp
Didn't know what to ordered but I saw the biscuit and gravy and that looked amazing! Probably gonna try that next time. Everything taste good and yummy though! Servers were nice !
google avatar

Christina F.

Yelp
Great food, service and location as well as ambiance!! Like home but better! Definitely try the biscuits and gravy!! The bacon was thick and well cooked! I loved the no-nonsense approach of this place truly giving it mid-American vibes!!

Yelp
Traditional full menu breakfast. Eggs any way, breakfast meats, potatoes, grits, pancakes, etc. My go to for breakfast in KC. Reliably good.

Riley D.

Yelp
Typical old school breakfast place. Pretty much have every general breakfast item you can think of on the menu. Good prices and good service.
google avatar

Allison H.

Yelp
Nice and attentive servers. Food came out quickly from the kitchen and tasted great! The diner is very cute and clean

Yelp
This is your typical greasy spoon. Not bad, but definitely not on the healthy side. The servers were extremely kind and fast. They greeted everyone coming in, refilled water and coffee constantly. I ordered eggs and hash browns and was not disappointed. My husband ordered a biscuit and gravy dish but was slightly disappointed how everything was saturated in gravy. He didn't realize that they would stack the eggs, hash browns and biscuits together and then cover it all. The interior is a mixture of old school diner and garage sale. Overall not too shabby!

Yelp
Poor, poor, pitiful me! This morning I had to take my car into the shop and have four new brakes put on it. Now going to the shop and having my brakes replaced always makes me hungry so when all was said and done and the tab paid, I hopped in my car and headed towards the old market. For you see, as I was sitting there waiting for them to finish the car, having nothing better to do, I started looking for restaurants in the area. An lo and behold what pops up other than The City Diner. I must have driven by that place 1000 times this since I moved to the Kansas City area in 1984. But until today I had never stopped in. So I stroll in up to their counter, grab a stool, sit my carcass down, and I ordered up a meat lovers omelet with hash browns and a biscuit. I added a little side of gravy to make the hash browns look better and taste better and there was enough left over for the omelet too. Everything came out hot and delicious and I had no problem enjoying a late but delicious breakfast. Well done City Diner! Well done indeed!

Yelp
I was visiting from out of town and wanted a mom n pop style food place to grub when i found this one. The servers seem too busy and place seems understaffed but they eventually get to you. Food was very good I had the hamburger patty breakfast. I would come back.

Yelp
Not to be confused with the Sh**ty Diner, which is much less yummy than this place. I love family-owned diners, and this is a good one. Some of their dishes are much better than others but overall the standard is high, and the food is home cooking and local and delicious. Definitely somewhere I'd recommend you coming, if you want a diner, although there are a few other diners in Kansas City I love even more. It's definitely a very good City for diners.

Manny A.

Yelp
Food was very tasty with great service from the staff. Very cozy place with the diner experience that I was expecting. Food came out quickly and fresh. Will definitely recommend to anyone looking for a good breakfast.
google avatar

Lori H.

Yelp
Perfect diner breakfast! Very wholesome. We're all KC Nice here so a couple diners approached and visited. It was charmingly unpretentious.

Andy E.

Yelp
Very inexpensive breakfast, and friendly staff. This is not a fancy brunch diner that serves cocktails so my expectations were low, but both times I've gone it was really good breakfast.
google avatar

Richard S.

Yelp
Great little corner dinner. If you want a good old dinner with amazing food. Come here, nothing fancy but basic food made great. Service is super fast to get you in and out.
google avatar

Briana C.

Yelp
The diner was a small corner diner with great food. I saw signs mentioning they were under staffed. The cinnamon roll was better than Cinnabon! It was so delish. We are from out of state. If we came back I would definitely come get that again!
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Food was good! Loved the diner atmosphere & will totally bring the family back again!

Yelp
Great classic diner breakfast! Adorable inside, love seeing people sitting at the counter on Saturday morning, big windows have a lovely view of the iconic smokestacks in the Rivermarket. I had the BLT and it was incredible! Thick ultra crispy bacon slices pilled on lightly toasted white bread. I asked for extra tomato just because I love them, and our waitress brought them out with no problem. Everyone at my table was super please with the food. I had a few tater tots, and they were so hot crispy! I will definitely get those next time. Super friendly service and reasonable prices just what that you'd expect at a cute hometown diner! I'll definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Kyle V.

Yelp
A traditional city diner with a lot of history. The prices are reasonable diner prices and the service is what you would expect. Two ladies doing it all themselves and they don't seem that excited about it. The food arrived pretty quickly and it did the job for us. The omelette was large and the egg wrap was a perfect side. The hash browns were cooked perfectly and were my favorite part. The speakers were playing music from one of the waitresses phones, which got annoying whenever she received a text or phone call and we'd hear the ringtone. The speakers were also cutting in and out and made it annoying to listen to music. Overall, I'll be back because it's a convenient breakfast spot close to the downtown airport.

Gregory G.

Yelp
Awful. Brought my grandkids before the Big 12 tournament. Slow service. Server forgot items on our order. Greasiest hashbrowns I've ever had. Pancakes tasted like the greasy hash browns. Microwaved biscuits. Used to love this place. Wanted the grandkids to share one of my former favorite dive joints. Lost 5 customers.

Yelp
We came during the Chiefs parade and our waitress was super nice. Surprisingly the food was good although basic. I tried their burger and it was a solid 7/10. Their pancakes were good although they could be improved as they were a bit tough. The hasbrowns were crispy and thinner cut than usual hashbrowns which was great. My husband said his omelette was good as well. The only reason I didn't give it more stars is because the place looks very dirty and run down. I'm not opposed to hole in the walls as some of the best food is made in restaurants like that but there is a difference between old places and dirty places. I just think the least they could do is give the inside a deep clean, a fresh coat of paint, and clean/strip the floors.

Yelp
Classic food and inexpensive breakfast. Sooooooo much food that will for sure fill you up. The staff will make sure to get you in and out like any classic diner would. Definite place to check out if you're around the river market in KC and like breakfast!
google avatar

Yelp
I have always loved going to this comfortable cafe in the City Market for breakfast. It makes me feel like I'm at home and transports me from downtown to a small town where everyone knows me each time. I always go for the Chicken Fried Steak every time. One underrated aspect of the menu are the bread and potato choices and that there's no upcharge for switching options up. The steak is served with your choice of eggs, potatoes, and toast. I usually choose the crispy country fried potatoes and English muffin as my options. And this sausage gravy is exactly what a white gravy should be - creamy and peppery with great sausage flavor. And did I mention the service is always A+?
google avatar

Scott G.

Yelp
A classic old school dinner that will take you back in time with the atmosphere. The food and menu options were good and the chicken fried steak was on point! Service and staff were friendly and I cannot wait to go back.

Ingrid F.

Yelp
The diner was packed when we got there in the morning. Waitresses did a good job of clearing the tables to get us seated right away. The food was delicious. I got the eastern omelet with cheese, ham, peppers and mushrooms cheddar cheese was extra. Hash browns was nice and crisp. I ordered whole wheat bread got white and the waitress tried to tell me it was brown. I also bit into a piece of plastic from the ham. I let the waitress know about it. I got an apology from the cook. Aside from the plastic the waitresses were attentive.

anonymous p.

Yelp
Eh. Weird vibe here. Food was so so. Seems to cater to older folks. Don't go out of your way to go here.
google avatar

Darcy B.

Yelp
Pretty good down home diner with great service. The food was very mediocre. We love to frequent the area and the market but we're not impressed with this recommendation. The bacon tasted as if it had sat for hours and the eggs were past date to be served (my husband's stomach is very sensitive to bad eggs)! Sadly I wanted to like it because the down home feel but we will not be returning customers..
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
Stopped by because of a recommendation and safe to say I was not disappointed! Food was so delicious! Customer service was great! They were so friendly!
google avatar

Chet C.

Yelp
I do not order biscuits and gravy outside of the South, where I grew up. I took a chance and ordered the Biscuits and Gravy at The City Diner and I was overwhelmed. It felt like I was back home, with an overwhelming amount of gravy and five soft, tasteful biscuits. Absolutely delightful. Absolutely recommended!
google avatar

Kelly W.

Yelp
Such a cool find! This place is SO small but worth the wait for a table! I went there for the first time and had the Eastern Omelet and I loved it. Definitely going back!
google avatar

Sebastian B.

Yelp
Stopped here for breakfast as our hotel restaurant was closed... not worth the trip! The Good: Our service was pretty good, prompt and attentive! The Bad: The food was bland and blah. After leaving my stomach wasn't too happy with our choice for a breakfast diner either. Just really not worth the price I would say The Ugly Truth: Maybe you have to be a regular customer and keep coming back cause it's tradition but other then that there seem no reason to spend your money here at all. The servers hopefully get tipped for their work and not the cooks, otherwise they may go home empty handed
google avatar

Yelp
Great music. Another KC place that has mainly locals and "real people". Down by City Market across the Highway and down the hill on Grand north of downtown. An easy bird ride from anywhere downtown. Great music. Plenty of room. Good counter service. They don't cook everything in front of you but solid diner food. Next time I will try the pancakes which looked awesome. I opted for pork chops and hash browns and toast and two eggs. Side of bacon. While there was nothing wrong with it, I had the feeling that everything was not cooked fresh to order other than the eggs. The bacon was promising looking but cold and chewy and the pork chop was boned and had a feeling that it was just heated on the grill. Fast service though, likely for the working people they cater too. Nothing wrong with it but for a downtown diner, hit Town Topic. The main seller for this is proximity to City Market and authentic feel.

Yelp
Didn't get to take any pictures my kiddos were starving but we got to try the cinnamon roll & it was so delicious. My daughter loved the biscuits & gravy. My son had the breakfast sandwich and hash browns he said it was really good. I had their country fried steak & it was so good. Over all we all loved this place & would come back again. Oh & the staff were super nice & friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this little Diner! The City Diner is reminiscent of classic diners with that small, quaint neighborhood feel. The service is always speedy and excellent. If you are looking for some high-end steak, organic orange juice, or high-end coffee then this is not the place for you. However, if you are looking for fast, friendly, and a lost cost meal that gives you a great bang for your buck, then this is the place for you.
google avatar

Brittiney L.

Yelp
We have been here several times. Each time is just as good as the ones prior. The restaurant is always clean and staff is super friendly. It's a great lunch spot as they aren't terribly busy. The food is always hot and fresh and it doesnt take 3 days to get it. I always order the pork tenderloin. They have the best on town. I have been searching for better for months and no one compares. Husband got the double bacon cheeseburger with fries. He was over stuffed when he finished. We will continue to frequent this establishment for many years to come.
google avatar

Sandra P.

Yelp
This is one of the better diners that we have tried in a while. It doesn't look like much but it was delicious and the coffee was amazing
google avatar

Chad W.

Yelp
Giving city diner 4 stars for many reasons other than the food. The nostalgia of the place is rad. Can tell it's old and been around for a long time. Our server as well was very nice and prompt and super attentive. The coffee was that good diner coffee you crave sometimes. Straight up black and tasty. Our food came out fast. Everything tasted good ! Your basic breakfast done right. Can't go wrong with that. Seems like the biscuits and gravy is real popular but we didn't try them. Maybe next time ! If in KC pop into the city diner for brekkie !

Jody M.

Yelp
I ordered a bacon and cheese omelette. They charged me for a grilled turkey club. OK, whatever. I get back to work and I have a bacon, turkey (I detest turkey) and no cheese. I called to let them know and they could have cared less. Not a happy camper. Would definitely check my order from now on.
google avatar

Linda P.

Yelp
We both ordered what we always get at any breakfast place, french toast and chicken fried steak and eggs. The presentation here was different for the chicken fried steak because the hash browns were underneath and it didn't seem like that much. The egg portion seemed smallish also. But you get an option of hash browns or country potatoes. And of course the usual option for bread or biscuit. Although the French Toast looked little being 4 half slices (or 4 triangles, meaning 2 slices of bread) it was delicious, but being pregnant I was still hungry and had to eat off my hubby's chicken fried steak, eggs, hash browns, and bread.
