Super cute place! Not a huge collection but all the things they have are cute. There is some level of curation. Liked the section with silk scarves! The area with plates etc was also really nice. I was traveling so couldn't bring anything big back with me but I'd definitely shop here if I was a local:)

As NY as it gets! A joyful experience. Staff is super friendly and relax, the stuff available there is quite interesting, of very good quality and prices are spectacular . When we visited, Robert was playing the piano and singing. The cold and rainy day turned in to happiest (¿hippiest?) shopping experience. If I lived in NY I would definitely buy my furniture there!

A true vintage store, not a thrift store posing as vintage. Everything is good quality and priced reasonably for the condition. It’s a bit out of the way from other vintage stores but well worth the visit.

Lovely place! There is some construction happening in the area but they had signs up that made it easy to still find. Seating and dressing rooms were available. Lots of clothes, some shoes and books and other knick knacks, but mostly clothes when we were there. The only thing I would say is that it was definitely more vintage than thrifting. I saw varying prices from $35-$150+ depending on the clothing item. I generally consider a "thrift store" as most everything in store is less than $40. But would recommend if you want to find some cool pieces and are okay with spending a bit.

This is a top tier thrift shop for a worthy cultural cause. I will thrift at all levels and price points. Love that shopping here is more a curated experience and prices are more moderate than one would find at the Goodwill or Housing Works. But things are presented in collections and well sorted. Recent visit was “World” themed for eclectic global influenced looks. Summer tunics and floaty pants. Gorgeous caftans. The limited shoes selection did include several Manolos that were priced $60-$90 and would need repair before wearing. There was furniture setup at the front and in the lower level. Can’t wait to see what the next collection will be. Only wish it wasn’t all the way west, since I’ll be in the area for gallery hopping - so no time to shop. And if I shop, I won’t want to drag my purchase from gallery to gallery. That’s only reason I don’t drop in more often.

The selection was top tier for me, everything from home furnishings to vintage glassware, coats, cowboy boots, and those fedora hats 🥰 were rather impressive! The value for most of the things there were definitely adequate as I left, purchasing a molehair red vintage coat for about $150. They had everything from Coogi sweaters to military style and fireman coats. Service was average as the workers were able to answer questions and it seemed like they interacted only if you interacted with them. The cashier was using her phone behind the register until we were ready to ring up our purchases. I guess that would be OK in a no pressure to go out of your way atmosphere, but to me, it felt kind of standoffish. Besides that I could’ve stayed in this store for hours and buy everything inside if I had the money to do that. Go here!

Excellent selection, reasonable prices. Mix of old and new. They're not trying to prices gouge either. Nice selecting of art, furniture and homeware.

Stumbled upon this cute little thrift shop while art gallery hopping in the area! Compared to other thrift shops, I felt that this place was much more organized/clean and people were very warm/friendly. They sell home decor, furniture, clothes, and other things. I mostly focused on clothes but there is a whole basement section for non-clothing items. Clothes were organized by color and in good quality. I liked how the racks were positioned so that it was spacious enough to actually browse through. The changing rooms were clean and well-managed. The staff was so nice, asked for our names, and even offered styling recommendations. The only thing was that I feel like things were generally more pricey (vs other places might have a wider range from cheaper to more expensive).

I love thrift shops and I support them all the time. I discovered City Opera Thrift Shop while visiting a local gallery. This is not a neighborhood I usually frequent so I was very curious. Well, I did not need to be curious for very long. City Opera has beautiful things, a lot of them, but at very high, occasionally more than retail, prices. Keep in mind that everything here is donated, the store does not pay purchasing or shipping costs, so reasonable prices would be reasonable. Another reviewer mentioned the staff....were the staff doing a fair job, the prices would be fair.

Long being one my all time favorite thrift shops with theatrical flair and an always friendly and helpful staff, I was riding by and saw they landed in my neighborhood after closing in Gramercy. How did I miss this? I in the heart of the Chelsea galleries in a space with two levels that is spacious and airy though maybe a bit smaller than Gramercy the magic is created anew. The clothes here feel curated and some lovely furniture pieces plus art and pictures that look museum worthy. Bought Marni sneaks Italian sandals Total: $55 Needles to say I will be here often and hope they stay a long while in the 'hood.

City opera thrift was a completely unexpected find while I was gallery strolling in Chelsea. Shockingly amazing furniture prices and so many interesting pieces. We picked up two books: one vintage Cantonese cookbook from SF chinatown and a beautiful new large hardcover of Mission Street Foods for $5 and $7.50 respectively! Sofas were going for $150 and there was a cabinet with a marble top going for $150. Shocking! Especially for Chelsea shopping. Come for cheap: Furniture, cookware, books, and other wares. Average consignment prices for designer and vintage clothing.

Agree that this thrift shop is extremely clean and feels more like an upscale boutique. The sales staff was friendly, efficient, and generally awesome. \What I think I didn't understand from the reviews here, and which I would have liked to have known, is that this was aimed toward a particular style, more like a "boho / world" vibe, that includes everything from traditional kimonos and handmade S. American clothes to artisan crafted leather bags. As such, if you are used to finding a lot of variety in styles, you'll be somewhat disappointed. There is a lot of large print florals, bright colors, leather bags, handmade bric-a-brac from around the world. It's not necessarily my vibe, but I still found a few pieces I liked. Also a head's up that most of the cooler items were either $65 or $125, which is a little eye-watering when the brands are not as well-known. There were also some boring "mall brands" mixed in there, like Ann Taylor dresses that technically fit with the vibe because they were large print, and I found those expensively priced. That said, there are cool finds to be had here. And I didn't mind paying a bit more, as everything also was in very condition, the staff was great, and as I said, the store was very clean.

High-end thrift shop alert. I fuck so hard with this place! The employees are super sweet (specially the younger blonde with the nose piercing). I've found so many great gems here such as rugs (purchased today), Jimmy Choo heels and a beautiful tea set. Expect to pay ~$50 for an item, more or less. It's not a cheap thrift store as all items are in near perfect condition! This store is surrounded by competing thrift stores (Vintage Thrift, Goodwill, Housingworks) but overall I usually never walk out of this store empty handed. The upstairs is my favorite (awesome furniture brands like Pottery Barn, etc)! FYI- No furniture delivery. You must fend for yourself here.

Wow is all I can say. The bestest items all the time every time I go there every week. So little prices I am embarrassed. The staff is too much fun and helpful I can not stay away. The place just has too much spiritual kindness. If you do not visit you are missing out on joy and great stuff. Lloyd

This is precisely what I look for in a thrift shop- beautiful high end and unique clothing for men and women, outrageously well designed costume jewelry, quality furniture and shelves of art books!

High end clothing. Good prices on housewares and furniture. Fair prices ( no deals) on vintage leather purses need a Hermès scarf? Lovely set of china? Fur or wool hats and accessories? Yes

The location on West 26th Street is less conveniently accessible than the previous location but the staff are very helpful and have arranged the layout to make shopping easy. It is not over stuffed nor claustrophobic. This is one of my favorite second hand shops and supports the opera dear to me.

Truly a staple to New York City and the arts scene for over 40 years that I love to support. City Opera Thrift shop has a superb and unique selection of home accessories, furniture, jewelry, as well as womens and mens clothing. Especially love the monthly theme events where the thrift shop changes up inventory. Super easy to donate too as well through calling to schedule a pick up or bringing it to the thrift shop.

I came in here expecting to spend $10 and under per item, like I would with almost any other thrift shop. Boy was I wrong. Everything is $100 and up. However, everything is so clean and beautiful! The staff members are kind too, although everyone just did their own thing. Did I end up buying a coat for $150 here? Yup. I dropped mad money at City Opera Thrift Shop. The clothes and items here are of the highest quality! Technically, it's still a thrift shop, but it is a very high-end thrift store. However, if you have the money to spend here, why not? Overall I still had a great experience! I recommend people try City Opera Thrift Shop - just make sure to come in with the expectations of spending $100+ per item if you buy anything.

This is one of my favorite stops in NYC! Items are on the pricey side, but I love every piece I've purchased here over the years. Definitely a must stop every time I'm in NYC.

Hands down one of the best thrift shops in New York. All of the clothes look brand new, the styles were fabulous and the store was chic. I loved the welcome from Marleen, she really elevated the shopping experience. She pulled some pieces out for us to try and her recommendations were perfect. Definitely coming back soon :)

Absolutely fabulous thrift shop. I wish I lived close, I would visit every week. Wonderful furniture and particularly good deals in the basement.

I really love this place. It's a fun spot to get lost for a while. Super clean, couches, and lots of unique and trendy clothes and nice furniture and household goods. It's a little pricey, but higher end will be.

This may be the best thrift shop that I've been to in NYC. Yes, it is not cheap, but they have an AMAZING selection. Every item is very clean, too. I kind of don't want people to find this place so I can get the best items for myself lol

This is what I love about NYC, cool & fun places like the City Opera Thrift Shop. Picture seeing a row of the same Vera Wang dresses. I'm assuming, this store sells clothing props from Broadway shows and "The Opera". Walking into the shop, your faced with racks of vintage clothing. But is it? Why are there 10 pairs of the exact shoe? There is also a jewelry case but not too many items for men. Going upstairs is a different dimension. If there is one thing I love, it's French furniture but more particularly a chaise lounge with crushed velour material. That's just pimpin' on a whole new level. They had some paperback books for sale, my son bought a book. Just for giggles I asked about discounts. The kid looked at me like I had three heads. Nice store, I would return!

Here's a dirty little secret of mine: Gramercy is my temptation for thrift shopping--not the East Village. Whoops, guess I got that out too soon. But it's true. I discovered this gem about 2 years ago, while on a thrift shopping adventure with a friend in the area. The area has a lot of great thrift shops but other than Goodwill, this is one of the few shops where you can find a mixture of low-end, mid-end and high-end pieces. One floor was not enough, so they needed another to put in furniture and house and kitchenwares. I find some of their items a bit pricey, especially when specific categories of items are at a fixed price, regardless of name brand or even one without a label. Because they also put their own sale tags on their clothes to make it seem like it came straight from a retail store, it can be very deceiving to think of them as brand new. Even the window displays will make you think it's another Macy's or Barneys display! There are so many lovely and timeless pieces and the clothes are more geared towards the older crowd. If you ever needed a nice dress to a cocktail party or even a Christmas party, this is the perfect place. The shoes are also very nice and modern but not dirt cheap. Be sure to check out the furniture section and the decor section upstairs--the bowls are absolutely gorgeous.

I got drawn into this place because a) I'm a thrift store junkie, and b) the window display had Louboutins, Manolos, and Prada shoes. Say what? In I went! The layout is kind of cool. There is an upstairs and a downstairs. Downstairs is jewelry and women's clothing and shoes. Upstairs is household items, furniture, and men's clothing and shoes. After glancing at a lot of pieces, I found that the clothing items tend to be around $20 or so, with more expensive pieces going to be near $75-$100 (nice coats?). The clothing was so so - some felt a little frumpy/old lady, but the clothes looked like they were hand-picked and not the random stuff you'd see in Salvation Army. The shoe selection was okay - I didn't see the Louboutins and all in the actual store though - some Coach and Ferragamo, Cole Haan. The rest were Van Eli, Nine West, etc. The shoes looked cute, mostly pumps, but I didn't find anything I particularly liked. The framed pictures/paintings were so cool, and they weren't that expensive. Flowers, asian art, etc. I recommend taking a look there if you want a cool piece for your place.

My girlfriend and I came here for shopping and OMG, I found some seriously great bargains. They have a great range of designer clothes, shoes, jewelry and for really reasonable prices. Everything was in great condition...... and they are a non-profit so I didn't feel jipped. I picked up some jewelry and some Dolce and Gabbana shoes which didn't even have scuff marks on the bottom for $25! Out of all the thrift stores in the neighborhood, this was my favorite. My girlfriend picked up a St John's couture suit for $75 -- what a bargain!

One halloween I got a bunch of costumes here for $100 (like 4 costumes because I couldn't decide). It was such a great deal, but havent seen a deal like that since. They usually have an interesting selection, worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood.

While you may be coming here for some vintage clothing finds, I was most impressed by the amazing furniture finds. I can't believe they haul those items up to the second floor only to need to haul them back down later! There aren't too many places in Manhattan that do resale furnishings, so definitely give this place a look if you're in the market for a great piece.

Had to do some hunting but found an incredible faux fur winter coat here for $30 that has managed to keep me warm all winter (so far). The store is two levels; the bottom floor is mostly clothing, belts, and shoes (all very vintage, rare finds) and the top floor is furniture, trinkets, and books. It seems a little musty but it's worth searching through to find a gem.

A part of me really doesn't want to write this review, especially as I sit here and think about all of the times I spent trolling the aisles of this wonderful little thrift shop that has truly stood the test of time. The hipsters have not taken hold! I used to come here with my grandmother after she'd pick me up from middle school. As I've mentioned before, she was a woman of impeccable style. Every time I come in here I think of her and have more appreciation for it. City Opera has it all -- from first edition books to festival posters of the past, to fashionable knick nacks that crush anything you'll find in contemporary home goods stores. It especially puts the neighboring Goodwill, Salvation Army and Housing Works to shame. I've found wonderful bangles and hats here, and tragically let the most beautiful lamp escape my purchase a few years ago. I will always regret not buying that gorgeous lamp when I saw it. It looked like it arrived from a recently deceased Upper West Side lady who had her heyday in 1972. Tragic loss.

Dropped off several items for donations on a day they were doing inventory for a big fashion show and sale. I thought the place was closed and that I would have to come back but the building next door had a side doorway into the store for drop offs . They happily accepted my donations and made me feel good about parting with family items that held many memories. A woman at the place told me my items would definitely draw attention. I donated two fur coats that were old but in excellent condition.

Above average thrift shop that sells clothing, handbags, accessories, home decor and some furniture. The prices are fair and they are quite organized compared to other thrift stores. You'll likely find a bargain on furniture here. It's a cool place to check out when you're in the area. Who knows you might try your luck and find something you weren't looking for.

Last stop on the 23rd St. Thrift Crawl! Previous stop was: http://www.yelp.com/biz/goodwill-new-york-2 I love City Opera Thrift. I was quoted about how much I love them in the Zagat shopping guide! (That was a few years ago, now...) As you might glean from the name, this shop benefits the Opera, and you can usually find some sort of amazing opera-costume related thing here. Also, the people who tend to donate to this shop are, I presume, fabulously wealthy. You can find the nicest things here: high-end fashion, cool (real) vintage pieces, secondhand furs, unique jewelry, really nice housewares and decor. Everything's in great condition, and very clean. The setup is classy, with a lovely balcony, really more like a boutique than a thrift shop. Even the glamorous salesgirl looks like she stepped right off a 1930's movie set. They have periodic sales - yesterday was 35% off housewares, which meant that I got a 1950s Bavaria porcelain candy dish with a retro-atomic pattern, and a handmade glazed and painted pottery vase (previously sold for $85) for $10. each. Score! OK, time to lug home your booty!

Bored at work one day (I MEAN...) -- on my lunch break, I decided to check out the thrift stores over on 23rd street, which are just a hop and a skip from work. I am known among my friends as a scavenger...err...thrifty person. I LOVE me a store that smells of oldness and greatness. This place only had the latter, which was fine by me. After being *severely* disappointed in the Goodwill and Salvation Army, I was treated to a smorgasbord of amazing treasures in this store! I was really impressed! I ended up buying a button up shirt, a mason jar that says "TEA" in beautiful 70s font and an orange pitcher with glasses in the front window. All for $50.... BUT SINCE WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE WINDOW DISPLAY..... Let me talk about why one star was taken away. The store is amazing and has a lot of low priced items in it. Surprisingly low for how beautiful the store is. That being said, the paintings/hung art work is WILDLY overpriced. BUT back to the window display. If you want something in it, you have to come back Saturday morning and wait in line. Some weird ploy to have people come back to purchase more but all I saw were determined old ladies (and me) that just wanted the specific items. Stop making it so hard City Opera! First come, first grab, first purchaser!

I found a gorgeous top here that I will forever treasure. This place is such a gem. I imagine that like any thrift store, I won't find anything most times I go, but this charming place seems like it will be worth visiting often to find that one amazing piece every once in a long while.

City Opera is something between a thrift shop and a vintage store. The good thing about that is that they'll have something for you, no matter your price range. The clothes are nice, if a bit pricey, but what really makes City Opera worth coming to are their accessories - bags and shoes. Very nice selection of both, and for good prices. The place is clean and organized. The staff is awesome, and have always been extra nice to me. Even when I was doing something annoying, like asking them to translate the Chinese writing on a bag before I bought it. Anyway, this is a good place. Try it out, Ii'll bet you'll find something you like here.

"I wear a big ass coat, I look incredible" - I happened to see a man wearing a gigantic full length fur coat while in the City Opera Thift Shop, and the jam came to mind instantly. This looks much more like a vintage-y women's apparel store than a thrift shop. Lots of books, music, wall art, and furniture on the 2nd floor, but mostly this is geared towards women. Not a bad place if you're looking for specific styles,..and it's totally different than the other Thrift Shops in the area.

I used to go to this store all the time and found great things like a Burberry Shearling coat but my last visit was the best find EVER. A Chanel bag with the tags!!!!!! after stalking the bag for two weeks I made her mine and couldn't be happier to add her to my collection. Check them out for great finds

A classier joint if you're thrift shopping on this block. :P Pleasant environment, music, people, well organized selection, though slightly pricey for some stuff. I find that their best deals are in their shoes department. Coach, Cole haan, etc, in excellent condition, for $35 or less. There were other brands such as Prada, etc. but those didn't fit me so I wasn't as excited :P Enjoy!

I was only looking for clothing, so I can't speak on the furniture (which looked nice). I think the prices are too high for a thrift store. Especially when it is right next to Goodwill and the Salvation Army store. For example: there was a Lulu's midi dress for $45. I've bought a good bit of stuff from Lulu's before and many dresses are around $45 brand new. I'd say go to Goodwill a few doors down; although its more expensive than a Goodwill in a smaller town, there are SO many great finds (designer names) for good prices.

This place is horribly managed. They say one thing and do another. They claim to pick up items but leave you hanging for FIVE WEEKS They say they will call you back but you end up being the one to call them EVERY TIME. Mismanaged and liars. Do not bother supporting The City Opera and do not bother with donations here. They can not handle themselves like adults. Call St. Mary's Episcopal instead. I would have loved to donate to the arts but this business does not deserve to stay afloat with their shady practices.

If you're a thrifter after nice clothes, you wish every thrift store was like NYC Opera thrift! I love this store mostly for the strong attention given to its ambiance. When you enter, it feels more reminiscent of an antique shop or high-end consignment shop than a thrift store. Everything is not just well organized but beautifully presented. Pieces here appear well chosen and gently worn at most. Considering all of this, the prices aren't too bad (and much better than Housingworks, which has lost its damn mind!) City Opera is an organization currently going through rough times so definitely hit this place up if you're in the area!

So - I'm not a master thrifter now by any means, in fact City Opera represented my first foray into the genre. But, I'm a convert now - on my first visit I snagged a gorgeous vintage saks fifth ave suit (80's) for $100. it's in great condition (practically mint) and would have run me $800 new. also grabbed a gorgeous black nicole miller minidress for $50. there was also a TON of alice and olivia samples, that i reluctantly put back since i couldn't justify buying old A&O when the sample sale starts tomorrow. yes prices aren't SUPER cheap, but they apparently have 20% off sales frequently, and the prices weren't bad, just not amazing. the same weekend, i stopped into housing works and was SUPREMELY disappointed by the selection. maybe it's the gramercy location, maybe i just hit it at a bad time, but after careful perusing of every rack in there i couldn't find a damn thing i even wanted to try on, much less buy. verdict? thus far, opera thrift rocks. please leave all the super cute size 4 clothes for me though...

I love this place. It's clean, it's organized, the employees are nice, and it's stocked full of goodies. Despite having purchased less than a handful of items from here in total, I still love dropping in to see what they have in stock. They have a pretty even distribution of vintage pieces and contemporary pieces and all of it is organized by color. If you wear a size 6 shoe, then definitely go upstairs to check out the Ferragamo pumps that they always seem to have at least 2 or 3 pairs of. The books section is kind of small and the furniture section is even smaller so if that's what you're in the market for, you might not find what you are looking for based on one visit alone. The prices here fall into the grey area between thrift stores and vintage stores. Clothing without a designer price tag usually come in at around $15-25 and the ones with, will be close to $100.

On the pricey side for a thrift store, but MAN did they have good stuff. I'm talking really great condition Frye boots, vintage Ferragamo shoes, and awesome awesome awesome sweaters. I'm guessing they're really selective about what they put on the floor because everything I looked at was in pristine condition. Between the furniture selection and amount of tchotchkees and wall art, books (and the books were cheap!), records, and the cleanliness and atmosphere of the store, this is probably one of my favorite thrift stores in the city.. But don't tell anybody!!

Don't be fooled by the word thrift in the name of the shop, it certainly isn't thrift in the way the goodwill or salvation army down the street is. The clothing are more pricey than that (jewelry in the 10+ range, clothing from 15+), but it does have beautiful choices. The people who were working there were very considerate and helpful. More vintage than thrift. The place is small, but organized, and yes i agree very boutique like. They do have a wonderful jewelry collection though, and it's def nice to stop in if you are in the area. Didn't pick anything up there personally, but when i've got more money I may come back to browse again.

I absolutely am in love with this shop! Very nice ambiance and the staff is amazing! Not to mention the music keeps you groovin'. Marlene made me feel so good and she was so nice and helpful made the experience that much better!

I probably got my hopes up a bit too much. The place is really OK but nothing really exciting. Basically, if you had a semi-rich old aunt who gave you some jackets she bought in the late 80's and then forced you to donate a moderate sum to the opera, you'd be getting the same experience. The furniture selection upstairs was small but quite nice. Too bad I couldn't take a dresser back to DC with me.

Small, charming, clean and well organized vintage thrift shop. There is a small but good quality selection of vintage furniture upstairs, which changes frequently. I bought a lovely mid-century modern end table by Lane which I use for my coffee table for $60. They frequently have very good quality vintage sofas, tables and chairs. If you are in the area it makes sense to stop by this shop, Salvation Army, Goodwill, Vintage Thrift and Housing Works as they are all within one block from each other.
