On the Grid : City Planter

"Imagine the depressing plant palettes at Ikea...and then imagine a quaint, independently-owned store, naturally lit from a huge skylight atop soaring ceilings, chock full of greenery from top to bottom like an indoor urban oasis: wouldn’t you rather shop at City Planter? This store is small, but it packs a big punch, and if you don’t see what you need you can chat with them about ordering something from their extensive catalog." - The McQuades

I love this plant shop. They carry variety of plants for decoration and small in house garden. As plant lover I really like your collections.

True Review

Google
City Planter is a fabulous plant shop. They carry a nice variety of plants, both common and not so common. The shop is well maintained and decorative. The customer service was good. The woman was definitely helpful. It’s pricier than most other places I’ve been. It is one of the best places to buy plants in Philly. I will be going back.

Google
My rating is based mostly on my experience with customer service, which is usually the most important thing to me as a customer. I choose to visit City Planter based on the great reviews and it being only a 6 minute drive from work. I went on my lunch break. Upon arrival I was not greeted nor did the two women staff ask if I needed assistance. Granted, one of the staff was on the phone when I arrived. But as I got closer to the counter neither were occupied nor bothered to say hello or offer assistance. What really led to my not so great experience; is that while I was checking out, 1 or 2 men entered the store and was promptly greeted by both women staff. Which made me realize how strange it was that I was never greeted. I will never return to this establishment. As I was checking out the cashier was kinda nice, not sure if it was only because I was making a purchase. I only made a purchase because after circling the block several times trying to find parking in the rain, I refused to leave without a plant. Other than the experience, the plant shop was rather nice. Many varieties of plants to choose from. The prices were pretty fair and the plants seemed to have been maintained well.

Google
Super cute shop with helpful employees. They had a great selection of both rare and non-rare plants. I appreciated that the plants were reasonably priced, and that the workers were so knowledgeable. They even repotted my plants for me because I also purchased a few pots. Overall a wonderful experience and afternoon well spent. I will be back!

Google
If you're in Philly and you love plants, you need to visit, City Planter! The plant selection is fantastic, you can tell they know and love what they are doing. There are terrariums and wall installations along with the more standard succulents and potted plants you find in other shops. Make sure you stop and talk with their team. They are brimming with tips, tricks, and facts. I could have easily talked for another hour or two. Don't miss their installation wall by the counter. While it's not for sale, it shows you what's possible if you put in the time and effort needed to grow something really beautiful.

I stopped by on Sunday, 07-02-23 for two reasons. The reviews were good, and I needed a good plant to give a loved one as a gift. I can't remember the names of the young lady & the young man who assisted me, but they were great! Once I explained what I was looking for, they gave excellent suggestions. Aside from helping me find the perfect plant, they offered to gift wrap it for me. I went with the plant pictured, and Grandma loved it. She was excited about repotting it. There was a great selection and variety of plants. I'd definitely return to get plants for myself the next time I'm in the city.

Google
Love this place! Every-time I go so friendly and helpful. I have to shout out a worker who was so helpful on the phone! She was so welcoming, friendly and not rushing me off the phone I was so shocked. I was having ptsd from prior places and was waiting for her to say got to go bye. And she really answered every question! So thank you Avery for helping a first time gardener out!

Google
Charming with in-season indoor and outdoor plant choices. Annuals and perennials plus interesting empty and filled filled containers.

Yelp
BEAUTIFUL store in a great neighborhood. Today I went to lunch with some friends nearby and decided to go inside. There were many different types of plants and great options for pots. There are herbs and annuals in the front. If you're on a budget you can definitely find some small plants and nicer ones in the back if you're looking for something specific. Staff was knowledgeable about plant care and offered suggestions. Would definitely come again.

Yelp
This plant shop stands out for its extensive variety of plants and the expertise of its staff in plant care. The diverse selection, ranging from lush indoor greens to exotic succulents, caters to every plant enthusiast's taste and skill level. The knowledgeable employees enhance the experience by providing valuable insights on care, offering guidance on suitable environments, and even sharing tips for plant enthusiasts of all levels. The inviting atmosphere, combined with the abundance of greenery, makes this shop a haven for both seasoned plant aficionados and those exploring the world of indoor gardening.

Yelp
I'll be a forever customer here. They are so knowledgeable and helpful if you have any questions about plants. I brought my 5 foot tall tree into the store to get tips on how to care for it. All of the workers were so supportive and educational. I don't know much about plants and they helped me understand how to care for my plants and get started with other plants. They have a great selection of plants.

Yelp
What a fantastic store to have in the city, super grateful! The store is very clean, organized and well stocked!

Yelp
I found City Planter as I was just going on a short walk around lunch time. The plants and flowers outside alone caught my attention so I decided to go in and look around. I was WOW'ed and impressed on the amount of plants they have in this store and how they are all neatly placed on every shelf and corner of this space. They have a large variety of plants, big and small. I came back the next day and bought rosemary, tomato, lemon thyme a silver leaf plant.

Yelp
What an experience! I bought a large snake plant from a large home improvement store in Philadelphia and it lacked pzaz! That and a few leaves started to turn and I was not 100% certain how to best care for the plant as a new #plantmom. After my visit, not only did I find the most dreamy ceramic pot at city planter, the staff was super helpful. I wasn't sure if I should repot my plant, etc but I left with a lot of helpful advice. The sales associate trimmed my existing plant's dead leaves and helped staged my plant with styrofoam risers so it looks it's absolute best I'm the new pot. Can't wait for my next purchase.

Yelp
I really love the physical store. But as a plant novice, I need assistance. Not only did none of the three employees working offer to help at all, they didn't even acknowledge my presence. What's the point of paying three people to stand at your front counter and gossip (to be fair, one of them was watering plants)? Disappointed because this could be an awesome store if they had even semi-attentive employees.

Issa M.

Yelp
First time here. Looking to make my home a jungle. They had Great selection of exotic plants. Big and Small. Decent Pricing. Upon entering was not greeted or asked if I needed help. Circled the empty store for almost an hour without acknowledgment while the employees talked amongst themselves. Asked for help with gnat products and employee sitting at register did not want to direct me to the products they had. Checkout was brief , no thank you . Just bagged up and handed me my bag. Thought I found my new plant shop but I don't know if I want to return with that service.

Yelp
I love plants. I stopped in this shop after a morning of apartment hunting and brunch. The staff was friendly. The plants are beautiful. I definitely be back.

Yelp
During my trip to Philly on Sunday, I found this cute plant shop and I was blown away. They really take advantage of the small space. There's plants in every corner of this place. One of the things I really appreciated was the barcode tags. They had the name of the plant, the type of light needed, and how much water is needed. That made my plant search much easier and answered all my questions. The staff was very friendly and greeted me at the door. They are still requiring masks and limiting capacity to 8 people in the store. There was someone at the front managing capacity. I felt very safe in "City Planter"

Jamison P.

Yelp
They are always helpful and knowledgeable. I never feel talked down to, even though I know nothing about plants, and they always point me in the right direction. 10/10

Yelp
MY LATEST OBSESSION. I am an adult now, and like all my other cool adult friends we are now brimming with plant fever, not baby fever because we're not ready for those levels of commitment. PLANTS are the new training ground before you enter parenthood, planthood is just way more speed. Now Philly has some GUHREAT options for nurseries but CITY PLANTER, is the only plant store for me. I've loved every encounter with every plant consultant and they have graciously re-potted my plants in the most epically, aesthetically pleasing way. No re-potting fee?!?! Oh my lawd so generous, so kind. Prices are beyond fair, and these plants are healthy and happy. Succulents?! Ficus?! Terraniums?!?! Air plants?!?!! Zz plants?!?! Ferns?!?!? Cacti?!?!? You name it they got it, or they can get it!!! The lush assortment gets me everytime. LUSH LIFE. Take all my money.

Yelp
I've shopped here in the past the store is great and filled with tons of unique plants / seeds you can't find at Home Depot.... HOWEVER my wife and I were standing near the door in the photo waiting to reserve a table at the restaurant next door & one of their rude , obnoxious & most importantly condescending employees said "move away from the door so our customers can come in " what customers ??? The store is closed to the public and all ordering is done by the window ( which we didn't stand in front of so guest can order ) . It's the lack of human decency for me !

Yelp
We ended up wandering in here after a lovely brunch down the street. Such a pretty little shop!! Loved the way the plants and products were laid out, so many perfect Instagram shots! Definitely a must visit if you want to add some life to your home/garden!

Yelp
My favorite plant shop in the city! An amazing selection of plants/potters and the staff are super helpful. I bought two beautiful planters that I had been eyeing for a month along with a Ficus Tineke and a Philodendron to go with (pics below). The planters were a bit pricy, but are fairly large, and the plants themselves were very reasonably priced. The staff helped me find the perfect plants for the planters, as well as my space/lighting, and potted them for free. She even loaded them in my car for me! I will definitely be coming back for more plants for our apartment. They have a ton of small succulents that are super cute and awesome terrariums. Love this place!

Yelp
Nice selection of plants and different types of soil. The past couple of times their staff have been condescending and unhelpful. I'll be going elsewhere for my plant needs

Yelp
[to the tune of "Raising Hell" by Kesha] Hallelujah Plants in a pinch, CP knows how to do ya, Ohm like Buddha Feeling so Zen in my plant den, ooh yeah When I need a gift, it's the spot I shop Want all the greens, man I just can't stop Much like Pringles that have just been popped, Setting up my own little personal crop. Ooooh... if you couldn't tell, When you need assistance, CP's got all kinds of help, Singing ohhhh... if your plants aren't doing well, They'll help save your plants from overwatered or bone dry hell. I LOVE City Planter. It's a little urban oasis, and it's so much more than just a spot to kill time before brunch at Cafe la Maude (but it can be that, too). Whether you're making a terrarium, need a hostess gift, or want some guidance when it comes to tending to your new greenery, they've got you covered. And while nothing is CHEAP, it's much more reasonable than I expected. Great spot with a really helpful staff!

Yelp
You can, and will want to get lost in this store. City Planter has the biggest and most beautiful selection of plants I have found in the city. The majority of the store is angled towards inside plants but during spring and summer they have more flats of plants for outdoor gardening. They have several different types of plants and a fun selection of pots and gifts too. Between the selection of plants, the gifts, the gardening supplies and the friendly staff it is very easy to loose track of time here. Their prices are reasonable and several of the plants I've bought here are not only healthy but thriving. So I always feel confident that I'm getting accurate care tips and advice. PS this store is also dog friendly-see my photo

Yelp
I happened upon this store today after lunch and was blown away by how lovely the setup is inside. A great abundance of plants, relaxing atmosphere, and good prices from what I could see. The people working were friendly and took me on a tour of a few plants that would work for a low light spot in my house. They also re-potted a couple of plants I bought and answered about a million questions that I had. Thanks for being so friendly and informative! I will definitely be going to you all again for my future Philly plant needs!

Connie C.

Yelp
One of my FAVORITE places to get unique plants in the city. They always have a great selection of tropical houseplants and everyone who works there is friendly to talk plants with. I feel that they usually carry larger plants at a very fair price. I also follow their instagram so that I can stay up to date with any new shipments that come in. Can't wait to go back for more plants!
google avatar

Anna D.

Yelp
Talk about maximizing their space!!! City Planter is your typical plant store in that you walk in and it is literally, floor to ceiling plants! The place isn't too big, but they had a nice selection of plants, succulents & planters. Since it's December they also had some Christmas ornaments for sale as well. I went into City Planter needing a new pot/planter. I liked the selection that they had and left with what I had been looking for. Can't wait to come back in again!!

Yelp
Excellent place to get advice and buy plants for indoor and small places. My daughter wanted a plant for her room and we received perfect advice as to what type of plant would tolerate the lighting conditions and how to take care of it. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Jackie M.

Yelp
I love succulents. I strolled into this store while waiting for a seat at one of the local brunch places it's close too. There is a huge selection of foliage in this store and I'd definitely recommend popping in here if you get a chance . This place is a succulent lovers wet dream. It has tons of really cheap cacti, air plants, and other succulent species. It also has those super ~aesthetic~ geometric hanging plants for cheap! I got an air plant and cute gold painted hanger for $15. I also picked up two cacti for $6 each in some cute planters. I highly recommend this place for getting some cute presents if you have a plant (or instagram) lover in your life.
google avatar

Yelp
This was a great plant shopping experience from start to finish. They gave me advice and helped me pick out plants for my succulent garden while taking into account my lighting conditions. The arranged them and re-potted them for free, making it beautiful by covering the soil with a layer of curated rocks and stones. All free of charge. In addition to that I picked out two plants that they re-potted and brought back out in under a minute. Impressively efficient, and the staff were all really friendly and knowledgeable. The store itself is beautifully designed with a very natural feel and tons of light. In addition to plants, they also have some smaller trinket and pottery which I really liked. Great experience all around.

Yelp
I've been eyeing City Planter from afar for the longest time soooo today was the day I finally decided to stop in. All I gotta say is... nature lovers and trendsetters rejoice! This place gets two (green) thumbs up! It's the epitome of the type of store I'd expect in Fishtown. Super earthy, practical, and trendy all at the same time. The store itself is a decent size. It's sectioned off into three different rooms. There is also an outdoor area that is open in warmer months. They offer all sorts of greenery including succulents, cacti, bonsais, air plants, and terrariums. You name it, they have it. From what I've heard, they have a lot more inventory in the spring/summer. But there was still a lot to look at when I went. I was definitely a little overstimulated by all of the cute decor and pretty plants around! I'd have to agree with other Yelpers... the employee working was not too friendly BUT she was helpful when I asked a question. Overall, I'd highly recommend City Planter. Even if you don't buy anything, it's still worth going just to look around! PRO TIP: check in for a 20% off of your purchase!
google avatar

Courtney D.

Yelp
So awesome that you can order plants online ahead of time for pick up!!! Loved this and was super easy and quick once I went to go pick up my plant. My plant is so healthy and was packed very carefully. I would 100% recommend this place and I can't even imagine how awesome they are not during covid as well!
google avatar

Sara P.

Yelp
Slightly obsessed with this place. I think one of the biggest barriers to entry for people who don't have plants but want them is 1) price and 2) intimidation, and this plant shop is so well-priced, and the staff is super knowledgeable and willing to explain how to take care of any of the plants, eliminating both of those barriers to entry in one fell swoop. It's so calming in there and they have a really good selection. The only thing I'll say is that I wish they had more of a pot selection, but I'm nit-picking because I really love it and can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Itusia J.

Yelp
Not a wide selection of plants. Service? Went there many times, never heard a "hello". When I tried asking questions to get educated the ppl behind the desk are either not educated on plants or are simply not trained to assist customers well. And then came that one time when I ordered a plant and when it arrived it wasn't what I asked for. The lady was so rude that I barely held my cool. But I managed not to respond to her behavior and just decided to never go there again nor to spent another penny. It is a shame. In stead of helping me as a customer, answering questions or educating me, the lady chose to be rude. For that reason I'm out and will be looking for another place.
google avatar

Josh R.

Yelp
Shopping locally can sometimes be tricky because local shops don't have as much room for inventory like major corporations. City Planter does an amazing job keeping their inventory as full and diverse as possible, and if they do not have something you are looking for, then they are happy to work with you to get it. The staff is well-informed on their products, professional, and very friendly. I ordered something online, but when I arrived they didn't have it due to an innocent inventory error. They helped me select a similar plant and even gave me a credit! City Planter is the only shop I buy plants from for a reason.
google avatar

Jenny K.

Yelp
This place is so cute! I love the variety of plants; wish they had more though. I feel like there's a lot of empty space here that could be filled with more plants and more succulents. The YELP check in discount is great and customer service is wonderful as well.
google avatar

Eric F.

Yelp
Plants. And more plants. Most of them green. Except for the ones that are not supposed to be green. They're not green. Or they are green but just where they are supposed to be -- those usually have flowers too, which have many colors. The colors you want. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Most of their pots are terracotta (sp?) and I wish they had a more colorful selection of the pots that I just mentioned in the sentence before this one. But it's okay because they have a lovely array of succulents, terrariums, and air plants. Did I need an Oxford comma there? Oh well, what's done is done. Support your local blah blah blah.
google avatar

Leslie P.

Yelp
I love this little shop! It has great supplies for terrariums and the larger plants are just gorgeous!
google avatar

J. Rudy F.

Yelp
Outstanding store. The staff is kind and knowledgeable. The selection is great. They accept a PHS (Pennsylvania Horticultural Society) card for discounts. Can't recommend them enough!
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
Love this little dream plant world! The sell air plants as well, which are difficult to find. This place is a little gem :).
google avatar

Melanie S.

Yelp
Nice product generally speaking but people working behind the desk are not very knowledgeable and actually sent me to a competitor. Would not recommend for serious enthusiasts.

Cindy B.

Yelp
Such a great family nursery with awesome plants and super friendly and knowledgeable workers. Can't recommend this place enough. If you read some recent negative reports they are coming from one person, Tory Rand, who has created several fake accounts. He owns his own nursery in CA and is trying to destroy a few nurseries who he feels threatened by. Competition can spur you on to be better and make your business great but instead of doing that he has chosen to spew terrible untruths about these other businesses...one who is a small mom and pop business. Please don't listen to a word of those fake reviews. Thank you and buy with complete confidence from City Planter.
google avatar

Su W.

Yelp
I keep coming back to this place! I love how they have a wide variety of plants. What impresses me the most is that the staff here is knowledgeable about the plants. This place is a hit or a miss on the friendliness of the staff. Most of the time they are nice and willing to help you with your plant questions however I have experience where the staff was standoffish. The place also seems to restock pretty fast, each time I visit there are new plants. Overall I give this place a 3.5
google avatar

N L.

Yelp
I've been here before and there were very few plants in stock other than terrariums. Maybe I just got lucky today or maybe this is the new norm but they had so many plants there today! So many! And all ideal for city conditions, houseplants not outdoor plants. There are a few different planters, small and huge, but I'm partial to terra-cotta and they have those too. I scored a string of pearls and a pothos. If you don't know anything about plants, the friendly staff can tell you how to care for them and what would be best for your home. Great store.

Duy N.

Yelp
Bought some terrarium plants and moss here about a year ago. Still alive and doing well. This is also one of the few places I've seen that sell marimo moss balls outside of the aquarium hobby. They had a tank full of decently sized balls; not sure if they still do.
google avatar

Cristie K.

Yelp
Sure, it's a cute place, but I'm really not impressed with their selection. I wasn't really looking for anything in particular, but I was hoping for a bit more variety, let alone product, which they don't seem to have a lot of. I was very disappointed. If you actually want a real selection of plants, don't waste your time and just go to Urban Jungle!! Or Greensgrow. Also the service is unfortunately mediocre.
google avatar

Beth S.

Yelp
I'm not much of a gardener, so for my purposes (snagging a few cute plants to have around the house) this place was great! Adorable shop, decent variety of plants, and friendly workers.
google avatar

Matthew R.

Yelp
The service here is less than sub par. I have visited this store on three separate at various times in the day. It was finally the third visit that I was acknowledge with any sort of "hello", only after about five minutes passing. I was eventually asked if I was looking for something. After briefly explaining, they said "okay" with no offer of assistance. They eventually asked more probing questions and brought me to the area that I needed to be in. I was reluctant to spend any money there. If you don't know exactly what you need, don't expect to get much help here. There are much better places elsewhere in the city.
google avatar

Bill B.

Yelp
Beautiful store, bright airy, yet earthy...really this is a whimsical place. There is solid selection of plants considering the size of the store. The staff is friendly, too. It's worth stopping in, even if you're not into plants as this place is a unique gem in cookie-cutter world.

Yelp
I stopped into City Planter this morning, hoping to find something unique to plant my herbs in. When I walked in the door, the woman working was helping a customer. She didn't even glance up, let alone say hello. I walked around the small store, alone, perused the paltry selection of large and small pottery. I found a piece I liked toward the back of the shop, near the desk. I turned around to ask the woman working about it, but barely got an "Excuse me?" out of my mouth before she rushed out from behind the desk to help the other customer. I stood there for a few minutes (I really liked the pot) and when she came back to grab something off of the desk I tried to get her attention again, but she ignored me for the third time. At this point, I had been in the store for fifteen minutes and she hadn't bothered to make eye contact. I walked out of the store with nothing, and reminded myself that someone always says hello at Ikea.

Yelp
I went to city planter when they first opened i think last year? i absolutely love plants and have over 50 potted plants in my home. I know much more than the average joe about plantlife so I was excited, but I digress.... They had some things on sale - they were moderately priced but not so bad for a little specialty store. I purchased a couple ferns that I had been searching out for awhile (yeah seriously i'm that lame) and a cute yellow pot that was pretty and on sale. I don't remember the service being bad, but I don't remember it being good either. This was my first experience. A couple weeks ago I went to Honey's which is next door to city planter and on my way out I decided that I'd stop in to see if they had any items on sale. Also it had looked like they did some remodeling and I wanted to check it out. I wasn't treated warmly when I entered the store at all. I'm not sure if this is because they didn't take me seriously as a customer because I looked young and kind of scrubby or what. I walked around past the owner (I guess?) and she didn't even acknowledge my presence. After about ten minutes of getting the cold shoulder i tried to strike up a conversation with her about how her store looked really nice and different since the last time I had been in. She gave me a one word response and then just walked away. Hmm. So ok, I understand some people aren't that great at being warm and friendly but this woman was just cold and rude. I totally understand the awkward in social situations type of person because I'm one myself, but this woman is just plane lame. I'm not sure if she treats more 'mature' looking people friendlier or what but I doubt that I'll be returning here to buy anything.

Yelp
Such an adorable shop that will surely meet your gardening and planting needs. The people working there have great knowledge of planting and gardening to help you decide exactly what you want and need. They always have a wonderful selection of seasonal plants and always have a great selection of succulents specifically available. I've taken a friend and my mom to their terrarium workshops before and they are fantastic! I highly recommend going to one. There's a wonderful selection of rocks, moss and plants for your terrarium, they explain the steps so well AND they serve some wine cheese on the side. Doesn't get better than that. If only I had more space in my place for more terrariums but for now, two is probably enough. Yes the prices are a bit high, but I think that's to be expected in the city and I still love this place!

Lyn L.

Yelp
Great place to buy larger indoor ceramic pots! I purchased a fig tree from here last year and it's in great shape. I had good service and felt that they answered my questions and provided me with appropriate care tips for my plant

Bernadette G.

Yelp
Really cute place! I have the worst green thumb ever but loved their terrarium workshop. They were so helpful! And so far all of my plants are still alive!

Yelp
Long story short- I tried to grow lavender from 3 different batches of seedlings and failed miserably each time. I really wanted lavender in my garden, and after searching ALL OVER the city for lavender plants, City Planter mentioned they had small herb sized plants in stock for $4. None of the big box stores had lavender plants in stock, and I was not going to try to grow a 4th batch from seed. With reasonable pricing, I visited the store and picked up two plants. I loved the layout of the store and the selection of planters as well. Will be back for sure.
