City Point BKLYN is a fun destination for doing a little bit of shopping and a lot of eating. It's not a mall in the usual sense, it's more of an eclectic collection of shops and stalls that include a Target, a Trader Joe's and an Alamo Drafthouse cinema. My favorite store has to be McNally Jackson Books; a multi-level old-school book seller that'll make you want to abandon your Kindle and will remind you why hardbound books are cool. If you're looking for the latest Jack Reacher novel, they probably have it, but that's not why you come here. A visit to McNally Jackson Books is an adventure in discovery. They offer an incredible variety of subjects and authors, including genres like Sub-Saharan Poetry that can easily keep you browsing for hours. Downstairs is a warren of more than 30 food stalls offering an incredible variety of international foods that will make deciding what to eat a happy challenge. There are just enough tables scattered about that with a little patience, you should be able to find a spot without too much trouble. On this visit we tried the Truffle Fries from the Moritz Pommes Frites Bar, which were crispy, wonderfully seasoned and great for sharing. We also got a Döner Kebab Slider from Kotti Berliner Döner Kebab, which wasn't really a slider, but a mini Döner Kebab wrap. It was tasty and the perfect size if you're getting multiple items. Also on the table were Al Pastor tacos from Jefe Tacos. They were freshly cut while still sizzling from a traditional rotating vertical spit and tasted just like the al pastor tacos I used to get in L.A. (that's a good thing). The only slight disappointment was the oyster po-boy sandwich we ordered. The oysters were fine, but the bread and the remoulade were a miss. Maybe it's just as well that I can't recall where we got that one from. I was also a bit disappointed by the branch of Katz's Deli here, which is called A Taste of Katz's. It's located right across from the Pommes Frites stand, so as I waited for my fries, I couldn't help but be tempted to get one of Katz's famous, orgasm inducing pastrami sandwiches. Unfortunately, the single pastrami sandwich I saw being prepared looked rather unimpressive, especially considering the $30 price tag. A few of the stalls that looked good and are on our list for next time are the Daigo Hand Roll Bar, Arepa Lady and The Pierogi Boys, but those are only the ones I can remember. There's so much that looks good here. The only part of City Point BKLYN that's not so great is the parking situation. Unless you're willing to pay a king's ransom for garage parking, be prepared to park five or six blocks away. Better yet, stick to mass transit. Other than that City Point BKLYN is a great place to spend an afternoon, especially if you come with a group.
