Stepping Beyond Cartagena: Exploring Colombia's Northern Reaches

"Ciudad Perdida, or Lost City, is an ancient sacred temple site of the Tayrona civilization. It was discovered by tomb robbers in 1975 and is now open to the public. The site is a significant draw for adventurous travelers willing to undertake a challenging five-day hike through the forest."

Visited in 2016: It‘s a great hike through the jungle - sweaty but very rewarding. During the hike we enjoyed Mother Earth, sleeping in hammocks and swimming in rivers. Mosquito repellent is always recommended. It‘s mostly uphill towards Ciuadad Perdida. The way back is much easier. We came in a small group of three with a guide who explained us a bit about the history of the lost City. It reminded me a bit of Machu Picchu (different culture, history, etc though), except that it‘s less crowded since you cannot get there by train and bus. Very recommended.

A wonderful highlight from a long trek into the wilderness of Teyrona. The main site of the lost city is beautiful and it was great to relax there and enjoy the tremendous views. We were treated to meeting the local Shaman at the nearby settlement.

Wonderful trip. The city itself is an interesting and beautiful place but what makes in amazing is the whole treck. It's a bit demanding (it's hot and humid and you go uphill most of the time) but you see indigenous people, beautiful nature, you swim in the river, you hear frogs. The trip is great, one of the cooles things I did while travelling. I chose Expotour. And I highly recommend them. Groups are not too big and people are wisely divided into those groups. Our guide Cesar gave us a lot if information about the lost city and it's history and indigenous people. We also had perfect and always positive translator Isidoro and very good cook Camila (we were fed really well). I highly recommend going on that trip!

An amazing journey. A few tips. This is a very difficult hike. I do believe that most people in good physical condition could do it, but they may not have fun. We had a woman in our group who had very little hiking experience, she did it, but you could tell it wasn't all that fun for her. But I will say it was one of the most amazing journeys i've ever been on. Walking through indigenous villages, roughing it in a proper jungle. Once in a lifetime experience.

An absolute must for every hiker visiting Colombia. We went with Magic Tours and had a blast. Our guides 'Mono', Bryan and Giovanni were fun, experienced and thoughtful people. The hike itself I would rate moderate level difficulty for experienced hikers. Tough, but definitely doable. The nature and surroundings are breathtaking, the city ruins itself exceeded my expectations. My advice: pack light, bring walking sticks and mosquito repellent (they are vicious).

This is definitely THE hike to do when in Colombia! It is a 4 day hike through the jungles of Santa Marta. The views vary quite often and the mountains are quite steep (Colombian flat)😆. Along the way you’ll meet many indigenous people, very friendly. You can buy water at all the stops and there’s even a WiFi point at one of the stops. Enjoy the hike!!

Great tour and fun place to go visit. Lots of steps from the river to get up to the city. There are hundreds of leveled stone platforms that used to have houses which are all gone now, lost to the ages. Definitely threat experience. Waterfalls to explore, cliff jumping into river ponds on the trek in. I would highly recommend going.

A place that will leave you breathless; the hike was tough when uphill but definitely worth the effort. Campsites are basic but service is very good.
