12 of the Best Hikes in South America

"An ancient Tayrona ruin reached after a challenging multi-day jungle trek that begins near Santa Marta; visitors climb roughly 1,200 steps to access the site and explore ruins of which only about 10% are estimated to be unearthed, lending the destination a palpable sense of mystery. Highlights of the seven-day route include swimming in the Buritaca River, guided exploration of the terraces and structures, hummingbirds in the canopy, and sustained daily hikes of four to six hours with a highest elevation just under 4,000 feet; trekkers must carry their own gear or hire pack animals for an additional fee." - Michaela Trimble Michaela Trimble Michaela Trimble is a journalist and photographer based in Mexico City. Together with my girlfriend I went on the four days hike with Teyuna. The experience was incredible, we have been able to enjoy the nature of the jungle, indigenous culture and amazing food. Usually there is only a guide but now we also had a translator. Thank you Pipe and Sebastian. The hiking is tough but the guides let you do it at your own pace. The views were amazing.

An unforgettable adventure with Teyuna Tours! Pipe and Oscar are truly passionate about what they do, and it shows in every step of the journey. Their storytelling and enthusiasm completely immerse you in the experience, making you eager to take on each new day. Their positive energy is contagious, turning even the toughest moments into an absolute joy. It was a pleasure to push our limits with them by our side. If you're lucky, Pipe and Oscar will be your tour guide and translator! A special thanks to Devis, whose delicious meals gave us the energy we needed to take on each day's hike. His cooking made sure we were always ready for the next challenge. Highly recommended!

The Lost City trek with Teyuna was amazing. Our trusty guides David and Jose made sure that we were very well looked after from pick up to drop off. David in particular was amazing in sharing his knowledge about the Lost City and Indigenous tribes during the 4 day hike. A huge shout out goes out to Sandra our cook who made all of the delicious meals along the trek. Overall, the organisation from Teyuna was excellent. The hike itself is demanding due to heat and humidity but the experience of hiking in the jungle and cultural learning is incredible. Highly recommended!

We really enjoyed the tour with our tourgide Pipe and translater Oscar. They were very helpful and were happy to explain literally everything and to answer all of our questions. From history of Colombia to indigenous tribes to nature to... whatever you asked them. The tour was very well organized with a pick up service, nice places to sleep, good snacks... also a 5 star review for chef Devis who prepared the best meals to make sure we had enough power to face the journey. I would highly recommend this company for your journey to the Lost City.

The four day Ciudad Perdida trek with Teyuna ranks among my best travel experiences ever. The trek is at times difficult, but doable for any reasonable fit person. You sleep in basic but very comfortable camps, all set in stunning scenery and within walking distance of a river or natural pool to get rid of the day's sweat & mud. Most of all a big shout-out to to the very attentive Teyuna Team: guide Beto, whose knowledge of the local culture and customs really made all the difference, the translator Sara and the cook Sandra who kept us very well fed throughout the trek. In short: highly recommended!

Before we get in touch with Teyuna we did little bit of research about Lost City and companies which provide service to this place. The most important for us was to have a tour-guide who is friendly and passionate. After couple minutes of our hike we found out that our guides Nico and Yon are really well knowledgeable not just about topics of history Lost City but also about other parts of Colombia and Colombian history. Because of them this hike was absolutely fantastic, cannot imagine someone could provide more knowledge. Organization of Teyuna company is also really good. They provide you with all necessary information from beginning and we can say they thought of every single detail of each day. You really don’t need much for those days apart from strong repellent, clothes to wear, water bottle, bit of money and good mood. ☺️

The 4-day trek to the Lost City is epic! Teyuna Tours delivered an unforgettable experience. Our translator and guide Oscar is a master of his craft. He can offer medical assistance, make walking sticks and water bottle straps from the surrounding forest materials, and most importantly, encourage every hiker to complete the trek. Fellow Spanish-speaking guides Beto and Lady were also incredible! Every detail from the food, accommodation and river-swimming on route is impressive and makes the whole tour rewarding after putting in the effort of trekking all day. The last steps up to the Lost City itself are tough but so worth it! It’s an awesome site and it reveals itself in many different levels as you walk through the archeological remains, ending with meeting a Kogi mamo (spiritual leader). I can’t recommend Teyuna Tours highly enough as they provided a truly memorable experience. 🙏 James and Eva.
