Civic Guest House Backpackers Hostel

I stayed at Civic Guest House for 5 nights with my son when we travelled in Townsville. I would highly recommend it for a budget traveller. Rooms were clean when we arrived and shared shower and toilet were kept clean. The kitchen was clean and well presented. The staff did a great job in keeping on top of cleanliness in the kitchen. As a backpackers the majority of other guests are polite and considerate. It is not a party destination backpackers. We were both happy and comfortable with the accommodation. The only thing be aware of is that the building is old and there is no insulation so noise travels. You can hear people if they are a bit noisy. Most of the time this was not an issue as I found most guests considerate. I would stay again if in Townsville.

I was seriously surprised by how great this hostel was, especially considering the price. I stayed in a seven bed dorm for two nights and very much enjoyed my stay. The dorm itself featured and own bathroom (toilet and showers which was very handy) as well as two fridges to store food. It was all quite clean and comfortable. You can tell someone actually puts some thought into designing and equipping the place, as it has a water fountain to fill up you bottle, a separate fridge if you check out late and want to store food, and an efficient stove which warms up quickly. I very much enjoyed my stay here and can definitely recommend it, especially considering the price one pays. Location wise it is also well located only a short walk to the CBD and on the foot of Castle Hill.

Amazing hostel! Can’t fault it. Beds are so comfortable and room is clean and freshly decorated. Toilets and showers were clean and plenty of them. Staff were helpful. Free tea coffee and water station. Kitchen was very clean and had everything you could need. Even an air fryer. Lots of outdoor social space. Pool was big and clean. Showers were hot and powerful. Really have no complaint.

We stayed at this place for one night only. The room was clean. It’s full of backpackers but the place’s maintained clean. The staff was friendly. There were plenty of parkings that are available outside the guesthouse. It’s a nice stay.

Ideal! Next to a woolworths, good location for buses, a lovely pool and great rooms. Kitchen is nice and theres lots of spaces to chill. Would recommend.

They'll take advantage of the online bookings. They use it to scam. If you don't pay in time, they'll still take your money, then say, unfortunately, you're too late. NO REFUNDS. These guys are opportunists, if not crooks. Avoid this place, it's not great, and it not that clean. Service is very limited. Lack of understanding what professional behaviour in hospitality is. Absolut disaster!

Good hostel, very clean. I stayed in a single room with shared bathroom. Bedroom had a fridge which was good, aircon, fan, clothing rack and a small sink. Bed was very comfortable. Shared bathroom was very clean, never had to wait in line. Shared Kitchen was well equipped and clean. Tv/games area comfortable. Plenty of shared outdoor seating. Had free coffee/tea in internet lounge area. Free wifi also. Staff went above and beyond to make my stay welcome. Other guests were friendly. I felt very safe staying here and was surprised it was quiet at night, so got a great sleep . Would stay here again in the future. Walking distance to town and beach.

Clean, comfy single/double rooms with fridge and aircon. Super friendly helpful staff. Large outdoor swimming pool, resort style. Everything included, kitchen, TV room, outdoor space, luggage storage. Cheap and highly recommended. Thanks for a great stay in Townsville.

1 Star -- Civic Guest House: A Sleep-Deprived Nightmare With Walls Staying at Civic Guest House felt like checking into a group assignment where everyone gave up halfway. The place has the charm of a hospital waiting room, minus the optimism. The moment I walked in, I realized the photos online must have been taken in an alternate universe where the building wasn't falling apart. My room looked like it had witnessed several emotional breakdowns and maybe a minor crime. The mattress had the structural integrity of wet cardboard. Every time I shifted, it squeaked like it was calling for help. The walls were so thin I could hear every conversation, every sneeze, and every questionable life decision happening in the rooms around me. Cleanliness was... creative. Dust in places dust shouldn't be able to reach. A mysterious stain on the curtains that I chose not to investigate for the sake of my sanity. The bathroom looked like it had retired years ago but was forced back into service. Staff interactions were an adventure. Half the time no one was at the desk, and when they were, they looked shocked that someone actually checked in. If you're searching for a relaxing stay, keep searching. If you want an experience that will make your own bed at home feel like a luxury resort, congratulations--you've found the place. Avoid unless you enjoy suffering.

My partner and I had such a positive experience at the Civic Guest House. Incredibly friendly staff, who baked us cookies and let us use their facilities many hours after we were required to check out. A+ customer service! Love j
