The traditional craftsmen of George Town in Penang - SilverKris

"A quieter, more authentic waterfront community where daily life remains visible: residents chat, scold children and mend crayfish traps, while the air carries incense from ornate gold-and-red altars hidden in doorways. It still functions as a living neighborhood rather than a tourist showcase, with locals continuing traditional routines instead of selling souvenirs." - Nicholas Walton

Walked over from our hotel around the Armenian Street area and it's a place that dad wanted to come by for a long time since we never got around doing it during our last trip here by car. On foot, there's that liberating sense of abandon that you can walk anywhere around this historical enclave for fishing activities in the past. The huge difference now is with the current Pulau Pinang State government's effort into the preservation of these area, but also to the surrounding environment, the sea breeze now carries the scent of forgotten tales of ocean vessels and cargo ships that ply the spice routes from Southeast Asia to the west. The surrounding sea is now clean and you can see huge schools of anchovies swarming the bow of the little boats docked along the various clan jetties here. Do come on a weekday if you want a relaxed time browsing through the little wooden homes perched over the sea. Highly recommended.

Nice shrines and interesting building methods. Consider seeing the place at night when they turn on the decorative lights. A guide to tell you about the history and point out the good food stalls makes it more meaningful. Make sure to visit all the jetties and not just the Chew jetty that Google maps brings you to.

I visited the place at around 5pm. Weather more pleasant, less hot. Can watch sunset from the jetties. Perfect for photos. Can have a glimpse of the way of living of original Chinese migrant in Penang.

Chew Jetty in Penang is one of the island’s most fascinating and culturally rich destinations. Located along the waterfront of George Town, this historic settlement is home to a community of Chinese families, many of whom have lived here for generations. The residents are traditionally associated with fishing and other maritime livelihoods, and their wooden houses, built on stilts above the sea, offer a rare glimpse into Penang’s living heritage. Inside the jetty area, visitors will find a small local market selling everyday goods, snacks, and souvenirs at very affordable prices. It’s a wonderful place to pick up unique handmade items while supporting the local community. At the entrance of the jetty stands a beautiful Buddhist temple, adding a touch of spiritual serenity to the lively surroundings. As you walk along the wooden walkway towards the main jetty, the stunning sea views and refreshing breeze create an unforgettable experience. The calm waters, colorful homes, and friendly atmosphere make it a perfect spot for photography and quiet reflection. With its rich history, authentic charm, and breathtaking scenery, Chew Jetty offers a truly unique insight into Penang’s cultural roots and coastal life — a must-visit place for every traveler exploring the island.

Interesting place to visit that can be done in 30-45 minutes, unless you spend times taking photos. Don’t forget to check the ice cream parlour, Kim the owner is very talented in designing and decorating her shop.

Quite a few shops along the way some bargains we ended up buying some magnets and strangely enough a packet of UNO. Plenty of places to have ice cream many souvenir shops and the jetty was interesting. Enough. Worth a visit. If you in the area it’s kind of a must do thing for the normal tourist like you like us and a few pictures. Nice place should come and visit at least once.

Interesting experience to see what life on a jetty is like. Recommend turning off the main path to see a behind the scenes look at domestic life here… but at same time being sensitive to not being too intrusive.

A really cool place to visit. It has an old world feel about it with great photo opportunities.
