6 Best Day Trips from Paris

"Through a courtyard and into an 18th-century former hôtel particulier, or private mansion, there's a stately feel to an arrival at Clarance. It's one of the only five-star boutique hotels in town and is affordable for the quality of the services and dining options available. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, and all decorated differently. La Table, the on-site restaurant, has a Michelin star, its chef Thibaut Gamba having worked with the likes of Pierre Gagnaire and Thomas Keller. The garden terrace is a wonderful spot for a drink when weather allows." - Lindsey Tramuta, Mary Winston Nicklin

Clarance Hotel Lille

"How did it strike you on arrival?Through a courtyard and into an 18th-century former hôtel particulier, or private mansion, there's a stately feel to an arrival at Clarance. Once inside, it's a harmonious mix of old bones and new style: contemporary works (paintings, decor, statues) by French and foreign artists grace the common areas; an intimate and surprising library room can act as a private dining area inside the restaurant; and the property also benefits from its own spacious garden. I loved the high ceilings and modern touches but private residence vibe. What’s the crowd like?Lille has yet to become the international destination it deserves to be, but it does attract French travelers and those nearby in Belgium. During my stay, I mostly saw fellow French travelers and well-heeled Lille locals who flock to the hotel for dinner. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.A poem by Baudelaire serves as a welcome message on each door to the 19 rooms and suites, and each of the rooms are decorated differently. I stayed in the Prestige room, the category above the smallest room, which overlooked St. Catherine's Church. The design was contemporary but cozy, decorated with jeweled light fixtures, Art Deco wall hangings, a reading banquette beneath large windows, and a soft color palette of creams and grays. It was spacious and comfortable. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?Very comfortable bed, elevated higher than normal, with soft linens. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase?Nothing in the room was exceptional or out of the ordinary, but I did enjoy the complimentary bikes reserved for guests. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. The bathroom was an add-on to the original building and as such, the design was far more modern. My bathroom had a pedestal sink with a pullout drawer for storage, a bluetooth-connected mirror via which I could play my own music (it's worth noting that this was strangely the only mirror in the room). Bath products were by Clarins (ginseng) that I was happy to use. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Free Wi-Fi, strong throughout the stay. Room service: Worth it?I ordered the continental breakfast to my room, which had generous portions and was delivered promptly. The rest of the room service menu is adapted from the full restaurant offering. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.La Table, the on-site restaurant, has a Michelin star, its chef Thibaut Gamba having worked with the likes of Pierre Gagnaire and Thomas Keller. The garden terrace is a wonderful spot for a drink when weather allows. What was most memorable about your stay? It's a short walk from the old town's major sights and landmarks, yet set back in a calm private property that could just as easily be in the French countryside. Bottom line: worth it, and why? It's one of the only five-star boutique properties in town, and affordable for the quality of the services and dining options available." - Lindsey Tramuta

We had a short two-day trip to Lille. A nice stroll to the main city square from this hotel is only about 10 mins. You are surrounded by eateries and shops. Check in was smooth with excellent service. However, I would ask for a room that does not face rue de la Barre because it was too noisy at night. Someone had a party that went on till 230 am with people sitting on the street right under our room and loud music. We called reception and explained and she was nice enough to give us access to another room that was away from the noise (a much smaller room) as a temporary solution. And by the way we were told the hotel can't complain even if it is noisy at 2 am. But know that giving us a spare room to sleep will not be possible if the hotel is full. Finally, not all rooms have air conditioning and we had a heat wave and the room was unbearably hot, even at night. And this was part of the reason why it was so noisy because the room was so hot you had to leave the windows open. This obviously will not be a problem in the winter or cooler months but the noise issue still needs to be addressed. We didn't not eat at the hotel because we were so tired from the night before.

Great hotel and very good service. Well situated for walking to the opera house and centre of Lille. Situated on a quiet street with its own courtyard entrance.

Stunningly beautiful hotel. Like going to a country B&B but right near the centre of town. Staff were welcoming and booked a dinner for us at a restaurant in town at short notice.

Marvellous hotel with friendly staff and a delicious breakfast nestled near the heart of old Lille. Room was a little bit tight. Lots of natural light and a comfy bed made for an enjoyable stay.

Nothing spectacular. Disappointing. Price quality not worth it at all. No taste in the food. On the 9 course menu there where 3 additional kosts. The wine menu was 55 euros and we got 4 glasses of wine, none of them were wines that you would say “great wine”. Disappointing for such a restaurant (and price). Service was good. Nice waitresses.

This hotel is in a great location in Lille. They upgraded us to a double privilege room which was a contemporary design in another building facing a very loud street- was not impressed for a "boutique" hotel. No turn down service, and at check in no one told us about anything inside or around the hotel besides where breakfast was. We were on our honeymoon. I booked a non refundable rate for two nights but because of the storm last week (Nov 2) we got an email from Eurostar saying they would likely be cancelling all trains that day(which they did in northern France, Belgium and the Netherlands). We had to pack up and leave as to not miss our flight back to Canada. In turn having to stay in London for the same night we had already paid for at hotel clarance. They would not refund me for the night I couldn't stay, even though there was nothing I could do about it. It was a midweek stay and the hotel was not full. I understand policy and procedure but also a little compassion goes a long way. It absolutely cast a dark light on our trip. I've never had such terrible service.
