Location is excellent as it's a short walk to the fish market, the shopping across the water, restaurants, and the funicular station. Hotel was still not yet renovated when we visited in 2010. And we had read mixed reviews about the room assignments before we arrived. Hoping for the best, especially since we needed a triple room, we were surprised to find that they allocated us a very nice room on the top floor of the main building. Looking at their updated website since the recent renovations, apparently we were booked into what they term the 'dobbel suite' good for 4 people maximum. The windows sloped and opened outward as we were like in an attic room of sorts. But there was good space for the three of us. The bathroom made good use of the space by being an all in one type with shower, sink, and toilet together. Just needed to make sure to position the huge door properly to segregate the shower from the rest of the room or the entire room may end up getting soaked.
They offer a nice buffet breakfast that's a combination of English type and Scandic type of fare. So one could get eggs and bacon along with herring, sardines, etc. as well as the normal stuff like cereals, yogurt, and breads. Sometimes the food was low due to the crowds, but the staff tried to keep replenishing it as well as they could.
We didn't find the service to be extraordinary-far from it. The front desk were all indifferent types. As typical for being in Norway it's not likely to find staff who are talkative nor smiley yet these were a bit too serious. But the main thing is our room reservation was honored properly.
