I made a reservation on Expedia to stay here for my second visit to Oslo. It had just opened late summer 2019, and based on the reviews on Trip Advisor, I thought I'd give it a try. It was a terrible disappointment!
There were tons of problems from the minute you walked into the place. You enter from a side street and you are encouraged to check in at a self-serve kiosk, rather than a front desk customer service professional. I had a hard time retrieving my reservation because they really didn't link up with Expedia. Finally, I got some help from a generally friendly Oslo native that could speak good English, but wasn't that savvy with the computer. After a phone call and checking several websites, they finally found my reservation. Being a new hotel, or one that doesn't get many reservations from Expedia, I wondered if I had been double crossed and they were going to say I didn't have a reservation.
After I was checked in, finally, I was given some nice instructions on the hotel. They touted the restaurant as it was the eighth wonder of the world, and being traveling for about a day, with a night flight from DFW to LHR, and a four hour lay over, I got to Oslo in the dark around 7 pm. I was expecting it to be close to the Central Train Station, which is a big shopping and restaurant facility along with a transportation hub and transfer station, but the hotel was not as close as they touted on their website.
They said the restaurant was having a private party and not available for guests, which struck me as very odd. Normally, hotel restaurants are for the guests and private parties have a special banquet room. When I wondered down the hall, I could see that they were closing early, ahead of their posted hours, which was in contrary to the private party I was told occupied the premises.
I was also told by the front desk clerk there was a work-out facility that had signs on the second floor, but when walking down the hall three or four times, I couldn't find it. I tried to open several doors, but they were all locked. I finally gave up because it was either closed or didn't exist and was way to difficult to find, so I wondered if it was another tall tale. There are no phones in the hotel even though they say there is room service, that you are supposed text your order to, but that sounded as iffy as the work-out room. I have never been in a hotel as highly touted as this one that didn't even have a phone in the room. So no wake up calls, no inquiries, no communications to other areas.
The room seemed a little bigger than a normal European hotel room, but maybe it was the layout. The bathroom had no amenities, and soap in canisters only, that had advertisements it was for sale in the lobby. Did they think it was so special people were supposed to be impressed? I was not. There was no luggage racks so my suitcase sat on the floor. The refrigerator they mentioned being in the room, was filled with beverages for sale and no room for anything else. The mattress on the bed was a pad on top of a platform and very uncomfortable and the sheets kept hanging out. I didn't sleep well at all. There was lattice on a tiny desk was covered with dust.
The breakfast buffet was a farce. They had one chef on duty that had an omelette station, but the choices for Ingredients to add to your omelette were atypical. There was no cheese, no ham, no mushrooms; there were items I didn't recognize, perhaps to save on what more and more looked to be a struggling hotel. But they wanted top rate for and billed it way beyond its true measures.
About the fourth morning of a seven night stay, I was awakened with janitors in the room. I have never in my life had hotel employees break into a room where I had the DO NOT DISTURB sign on it. They were mopping up water and accused me of causing it. They made some other wild accusations and I demanded to speak to the manager on duty, that they said was not on the property. When they called, she didn't answer. I wanted to get out of the place and I did, but they would not even give me a receipt so U could request a refund and complain about this quack hotel.
I made a reservation for the Thon Hotel which was really right next to the train station, and not just the train track platforms, that had no entrance.
GO TO THE THON HOTEL AND STAY AWAY FROM THE QUACK CHOICE HOTEL OSLO, THAT FALLS SHORT OF THEIR INFLATED EGO AND MISLEADING MARKETING LITERATURE AND FAKE REVIEWS ON TRIP ADVISOR! YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DIDN'T MAKE THE COLOSSAL MISTAKE I DID.
