Rooms were small, which is not unusual for Europe. Ours had an upstairs, and the A/C and fan didn't really work; but it wasn't too hot that week, so the open window was fine. Hotel breakfast buffet was ok. Front desk people were nice. Big TV at the bar with the Olympics on, when we were there.
The hotel bar, though, had pretty terrible service, and no food. You need reservations for the few restaurants around there, or you're doing take-away. (They didn't understand the concept of delivering a pizza there; the app/site we were pointed to didn't work, and neither did calling them.) There's no Systembolaget (to buy alcohol outside of hotels and restaurants) inside of Visby's city walls; so B.Y.O.B. before you arrive.
There's an Avis car rental (not well run) right across the street, but if you want a car, you need to reserve one early. The next closest one is about a mile walk toward the water. It's a nice drive around the island, but looking for the Viking's 8th century picture stones can be a fool's errand; some on the brochure no longer existed, and the one we found was tiny. We didn't get the sense that *anyone* ever goes looking for these Viking sites, even though it seems to be the main attraction of the island, according to brochures. The Visby tourist center said there was no organized tour or bus to take you to those places -- they were puzzled why we even asked -- which is why we had to rent a car.
Medieval Festival was that week, and it was ok -- no beer, no alcohol, and only some food. A lot of vendors selling axes, sword, animal pelts, and the same kinds of stuff. But there was a blacksmith stall that was banging out stuff old-school style. A ton of people walking around in costume, incl. a group of chanting monks. Basically, this was a Renaissance Fair, but since Vikings and other medieval things actually did happen here, that makes it ok.
Be prepared to do a lot of walking. It's hard to drive inside the city walls, because of super-narrow streets and little parking. The hotel spa/pool has very limited hours for kids.
