The Dominican Republic's Samaná Peninsula Offers a Quieter Alternative to Punta Cana

"Set in the hills of La Barbacoa, I stayed at the solar-powered Clave Verde Ecolodge founded by Noemi Araujo and her husband Jonathan after they moved from Santo Domingo; surrounded by forest trails and groves of almond, cherry, and acacia trees and just a 15-minute drive from Las Terrenas, the campesino-chic property felt like a nature-first retreat with a pool overlooking the Sierra de Samaná, permaculture gardens, and a suite whose balcony opened onto the forest canopy. Araujo guided us on a two-hour hike down the uneven road toward Playa Morón, and the lodge’s remote location—cicadas in the trees, cows mooing at dawn—made its emphasis on solar power and connection to the land tangible; breakfast of fried eggs and mashed green bananas fueled our excursions." - Lebawit Lily Girma Lebawit Lily Girma Lebawit Lily Girma is an award-winning Ethiopian-American travel journalist and the editor-at-large at Skift. We had an amazing stay at Clave Verde Ecolodge with our two little kids. The staff were so welcoming and attentive. The lodge's commitment to being eco-friendly is also inspiring and felt good to be in a place that values the local community and sustainability while offering comfort. The setting is beautiful, lush greenery and peaceful surroundings. Everything was spotless, rooms, pool and garden. The food and breakfast were delicious, and the kids loved the space to explore safely. A perfect family-friendly escape, we’d highly recommend it!

For many years, we've been coming to the Dominican Republic for vacation. When we discovered Clave Verde, we knew it was the place we'd return to as many times as possible – and we've been doing just that. Clave Verde is the perfect spot to escape the world's noise while still enjoying prize winner food, great cocktails, and extraordinary conversations. Our first visit was absolutely breathtaking. The second one felt like coming back home. Since then, it's been the highlight of our family vacations– a chance to allow ourselves and our kids to be in contact with a better world, one that's definitely greener, peaceful, and beautiful.

We stayed at Clave Verde Ecologe in Las Terrenas for 3 nights and absolutely loved our time here. The place has a warm, welcoming atmosphere and is surrounded by beautiful nature, making it the perfect spot to relax and unwind. We also ate at the on-site restaurant, and Chef Sandra is truly talented — every dish was fresh, full of flavor, and beautifully prepared. The owners are incredibly friendly and made us feel right at home. We highly recommend Clave Verde Ecologe to anyone visiting Las Terrenas. It’s a charming place with great food, wonderful people, and an unforgettable setting.

Clave verde Eco Lodge es sinónimo de Paz. Such a peaceful ecolodge! Es un lugar hermoso con unos dueños y un staff lleno de amor por lo Que hacen. The green, the trees, the flowers, the breeze, the food! Omg everything is pure excellence! Bear in mind that is an ecolodge, if you want an all inclusive cookie cutter hotel this may not be the right fit for you! As a nature lover, I can’t wait to be back to this place.

Supportive, Caring and Loving. Noemi received our request with openness and trust. We were able to organize our groups healing experience through text and calls. Never having met in person yet feeling a sense of reassurance that the connection would work. Highly recommend booking wellness and returning to your essence, oneness and wholeness as a place of restoration at Clave Verde. Every guest had good reviews and enjoyed the food amongst our dietary requests. We are grateful for this relationship of humans who care for the earth and serve each person. It’s as though the land speaks through them — a gift to feel.
