I fell in love with clay at a "try it night" pottery class in NJ with a friend, and wanted to find classes closer to home in Brooklyn. I have taken 2 classes at Clay Space, and absolutely love it. The physical space is spacious and well organized with a lot of windows and natural light. The owner and instructors foster a welcoming, nurturing environment for folks of all ages and experience levels to find their creative voice. The instructors are incredible artists who break down concepts and techniques for the whole class, and provide individual attention and guidance to help students meet their personal goals. Clay isn't an inexpensive medium, but costs are definitely comparable to other studios, and include 3 hours of bench time, clay, large equipment (wheels, slab roller, extruder, formers, etc) and access to a good array of glazes, slips and some oxides. There is a firing fee per piece, and you do need to purchase your own tools for semester long classes - basic tools are provided for on Try It nights which are super fun and supportive. There can sometimes be a 1-2+ week wait for pieces to be fired during busy times in the semester, but class schedules are organized so that everyone can have at least a couple of completed pieces by the end (I purchased unlimited bench time and completed over 15 pieces in 12 weeks). They also have membership with dedicated space for more seasoned ceramists. The students and members alike are helpful and kind. I have found a warm community feel that fosters inclusion, celebrates diversity, allows for artistic risk taking and a variety of styles. I have learned so much, and the playful freedom I have found there has enhanced every aspect of my life. If you are new to clay, I highly recommend a try it night or intro class which covers wheel and hand building techniques - you'll get a fantastic foundation to discover what methods of making work best for you.
