The Ultimate Guide to Adventure in Oregon

"Named for its exceptional transparency, Oregon’s 148-acre Clear Lake was created about 3,000 years ago when molten lava flowed down from the neighboring Sand Mountain and cooled, damming up a riverbed located at what is now the lake’s southern end. At an altitude of over 3,000 feet, Clear Lake’s temperature hovers just above freezing year-round. Relatively free of contaminants, Clear Lake’s waters are crystalline enough to see into its depths and its most enchanting feature: an underwater forest. Ancient trees that were drowned in the flood are effectively petrified by the waters’ cold temperature, and they’re open for exploration. Kayakers and canoeists can paddle across the lake for a close view of the tree tops, and trained divers can even swim through the submerged tree trunks.  The lake’s water is incredibly pure, comprised primarily of active underground springs that facilitate an extraordinary ecological environment. Melted snow from the looming Mount Washington also makes its way into the lake, the runoff filtered through the mountain’s system of caves and caverns by the time it reaches the base. Clear Lake notably feeds into the McKenzie River, which is the source of all drinking water for the city of Eugene, Oregon. The five-mile Clear Lake and McKenzie River trails meet and loop around Clear Lake for a picturesque walk. The trail is relatively flat for walking and mountain biking, though amateur mountain bikers should be aware that the McKenzie River Trail will lead them through a lava field forest, where dismounting is recommended. The trail is pet-friendly and takes between one and three hours to complete depending upon pace." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Had a fantastic time here and it was very quiet for two nights here. You can bring your own paddle board or-kayak , or you can rent a kayak , but it should be noted that the water here is very cold and there is no cell phone signal, but you can use the camp's phone to contact the outside world!

This place is a must see. The water is gorgeous and resort is rustic but nice. Employees are great and have a small restaurant at the boat dock and includes a small store that has everything including fishing supplies and souvenirs. Some cabins have plumbing and some don't. Suite 21 is the handicap cabin that has a indoor shower and bathroom. Suite 21 is also hooked up to community bathroom/showers which are really clean. Pack your mosquito spray because you do see some from time to time. Boat rentals are not very expensive. We rented 2 small boats for the day for $80. Definitely check this place out. Bring all your pots and pans plus linens if staying in a cabin

So beautiful! Nice quiet lake that is so clear- you can see all the way to the bottom even at the deepest parts. You can rent rowboats or kayaks or bring your own (launch fee is $5 but worth it)

We rented a small row boat and had a great time on the lake! It was a Sunday morning and there weren't a lot of people on the Lake. Staff were very friendly. They supply life jackets with boat rentals, so don't worry if you don't own a life jacket. They accept both cards and cash.

It's one of my favorite walks in the pnw. There aren't typically many people doing the full loop (5 miles), so it's not crowded on the trail. There are tons of places to stop and check out the stellar water and so many photo opportunities. The trail is well maintained for the most part. The only tricky parts are in the lava flow portions. The trail is very dog friendly. Plus: the leaves are starting to change for fall!

Clear lake is a very beautiful, easy 5 mile hike through lava fields and woods. There's a beautiful blue pool you can hike down to or just admire from the trail. While it is a popular hiking destination, it is not over crowded. You can rent canoes and paddle around the pristine waters or just hike the perimeter and enjoy the easy ups and downs and mostly flat and well maintained trail. Be prepared and don't forget to pack bug spray and sunblock, though we didn't have any issues with mosquitos when we were hiking around 11AM last week.

Stopped just to see the lake. Sun was at the wrong angle though to get the full experience. Campgrounds look nice and large and looked like a nice place to paddle board.

Excellent location to rent your boats at the Lodge! You could spend the entire day at the day at the lake if you like. The take out food out was not expensive. You can buy a large Root Beer Float for $4.00! Chili Dogs and Fries for only $8.00! What a treat to bring your family. Only a little hour drive from Springfield, Oregon.
