This Culinary Cruise Through the Pacific Northwest Follows Lewis and Clark's Path

"On a shipbound tasting, Coco Umiker — owner and head winemaker — had us laughing with her line, “Your one job while I’m talking? Drink!” and then proved the point: her Carmenère is rich and slick, “like a ride in an old plush car,” while the wines that stole my heart were a bone-dry Albariño and a Syrah grown in the wind-blown loess of north-central Idaho that is so redolent of sage it’s almost savory. Umiker started Clearwater Canyon Cellars in 2004 when it was only the 15th winery in Idaho; she noted that there are now 65 wineries and that “we’re riding the coattails of Oregon and Washington.”" - Becky Cooper

11 Most Charming Wine Towns in the U.S. - AFAR

"A producer in the Lewis–Clark Valley where the winemaker applies a nerdy, scientific approach—delving into microbiology and soil science—to craft its wines." - Ashlea Halpern, Nicholas DeRenzo

I don't know what I was thinking when I initially tried to just order one glass. Why have one glass for $7-10 when I can try 8+ different wines for $10? The pours were on the small side, but there was plenty of wine served and we did get an offer to revisit favorites. I'm pretty sure the tasting fee would have been waived if we bought a bottle, but we have a few too many bottles at home so I decided to just stick with the tasting fee. The employee was very nice and chatted with us more and more as the tasting progressed. The front area tables were all occupied when we arrived so they set up additional tables in the barrel room and opened up the wall/door so we could sit in there. The cool room felt wonderful on a hot day. They had outdoor seating set up but it was too hot out there. At least some of the other visitors appeared to be regulars. One couple apparently likes bringing in treats (like a chocolate bar) to share with everyone each time they visit so we enjoyed a surprise piece of dark chocolate. Overall it was a lovely visit. I just wish they had snacks. I would have loved something like fruit and cheese with the wine.

Visiting from the Tri-Cities last weekend and enjoyed the wine 🍷 and the people so much that we were compelled to join the wine club! Came back this weekend for their Enthusiast Club Barrel Tasting and we were not disappointed.

Wines are comparable with good Napa, Sonoma wines. We did a tasting and bout three bottles. The tasting room is small, but the staff are welcoming and have great stories about the winemakers to share.

All the wines were delicious. Our server was very knowledgeable and friendly. Loved the history that it’s a century farm and still family owned. The locals gave it a thumbs up. We totally agree.

I finally met a Chardonnay I love while on a lark. We went to Lewiston for the weekend. I had met these good folks at the Savor Idaho event in Boise and vowed to visit. So here we are! Their Chardonnay is buttery with a lovely mouth feel. Not acidic at all. The reds are full bodied and full of flavor. For a view of the vineyards sit at the end of the porch. It was a lovely spring day with a sky of blue. Can not be beat! We did join the wine club-check it out as well!

Yelp
I was happily done with work early in the Lewiston area this past week and made my way for some late afternoon wine tasting. I have been supporting my customer in Lewsiton for years, but it never occurred to me there would be wineries in the area, until fellow Yelper, Inna, visited and posted some photos and a review. Major shout out to Inna!!! So Apple maps takes you to a house on the property, but if you keep driving in, you'll see a sign for the Tasting Room in a larger building. They have seating inside and outside, but as it was a triple digit day, I opted to sit inside. Sarah was the individual assisting me and was fantastic! She knew her wine and is a local Lewiston resident! The tastings were a bargin at $10 for 8 tastings, and the tasting fee gets waived if you purchase a bottle, which are all super affordable! My favorite wine that day was the Ralph E Nichols, he was the owner's grandfather, and it's a wonderful red blend with Malbec, Cab Franc, Merlot, and Cab Sauv. I didn't purchase any bottles, as I had a carry-on, but I may need to plan my visits to accomodate a few bottles! Next time I'm in the area and I'm done early, I'm heading this way!

Yelp
Tried this place since we were visiting relatives. Locally owned and most wines are from locally grown vines. Enjoyed the personal feel ans being greeted by the wine maker herself. Enjoyed tasting all the wines but my favorites were the Albariño, especially on the hot Idaho summer day, and the Selway which is a red blend mainly made of their merlot and a cab sauv. All of their wines are very and dangerously drinkable. Would become club members here if we lived closer. Cheers! The wines were very reasonably priced for the

Yelp
Interesting and tasty wine. Nice mix of reds and whites. Cozy little tasting room. Outdoor space is dog friendly. Hearty and light food options. Knowledgeable staff is engaging but not overbearing.

Yelp
We've been members of Clearwater Canyon Cellars for I believe just over two years. To begin with Coco and Karl are awesome. They really get to know their customers and members. Second, their wine is fabulous. Our favorites is the Lochsa, especially this time of year, but you really can't go wrong with any of their bottles. Here's where I really need to give them praises and cudos. We signed up for their annual dinner in the vineyard and planned on going with another couple. Keep in mind this a multi course wine pairing event where they elaborately decorate the vineyard and the cost is nothing to sneeze at, but well worth it. Unfortunately we had a family emergency the Tuesday before the dinner. The other couple still went and told Coco of our circumstance. My wife told me today Clearwater was in the process of refunding our cost. Like I said we are already members, but they just got lifetime members.
