Retracing the History of Freetown Through the Life and Legacy of Edna Lewis

"Simply seasoned with a shatteringly crisp exterior, the meat was succulent and unmistakably chickeny in that hand-raised way. A thigh, breast, and drumstick later, you might not think I had room for Apple Brown Betty, prepared to Lewis’s exacting specs by Lenny Schafer, owner of ClearWater Fire-Grill & Catering in Locust Grove—but I did. The oven-browned assemblage of tart green apples and buttered, sugared bread cubes scented with nutmeg and lemon zest oozed pure, autumnal decadence."

I really wanted to like Clearwater Fire-Grill, but unfortunately, the takeout experience left a lot to be desired. We placed a pickup order that totaled just over $85, and what we received was nowhere near worth that price. I ordered the steak medium rare, but it came out completely well done—dry, overcooked, and lacking flavor. The mashed potatoes were bland and tasted like they came from a box. The sausage in the shrimp and grits was extremely overcooked—rubbery, dry, and almost burnt. One of the most disappointing parts was the crab dip. At pickup, it was completely cold, and the cheese on top hadn’t even melted. It felt like it had been prepped and forgotten, then thrown into the bag last minute. To make matters worse, two of our sides were missing entirely. When we called, they apologized and asked us to come back to get them. I did, and while they did comp us $20 off our next meal, it really didn’t make up for how lackluster the entire meal was. Maybe their dine-in experience is better, but based on this visit, I wouldn’t recommend their takeout. Everything about it felt rushed and underwhelming. They get 2 stars for the simple fact of trying to comp the missing sides. Barring that, it would be a 1 star for this experience.

My husband and I have been coming on Wednesdays for dinner because we love the chicken wing special and also the server Michelle. Clearwater will not give me all flats, but Michelle request and they give me as many as they can. I am pleased with that. Clearwater has some of the best ranch dressing around. My husband usually get something different each time and he is Mostly happy with what he orders. I do not feel that the bathroom is clean enough I usually avoid using it.

Hands down one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had — all thanks to our exceptional waitress Ali! From the moment we were seated, she was on top of everything: drinks never ran low, she was quick, attentive, and genuinely friendly. What really set her apart though, was her spot-on food recommendation. The chopped brisket sandwich she suggested was nothing short of amazing. You could tell she knew the menu inside and out and actually cared that we had a great meal. If you’re headed to Clearwater, I hope you’re lucky enough to get her as your server. Highly recommend this place — and especially her!

We have eaten at this restaurant numerous times in the past. Our son lives nearby and this has always been our favorite place to eat when we visit. Last week, we were so disappointed that I doubt we’ll return. Our server made an audible noise when told by the host that he’d been given a party of six. This was at 6:30 pm on a Saturday night and the place was practically empty. Usually we would have to wait for a table during previous visits. That should have been the first clue… Our server was surly and argumentative at best. When my husband ordered the Cobb salad with the flank steak (clearly described on the menu) the waiter stated that they don’t serve flank steak. When we pointed to it on the menu, he argues about it with my husband. My daughter in law’s Mac and Cheese was cold an unseasoned. Another person at our table was served Mac and Cheese that was piping hot and well seasoned. My broccoli was served without butter and I never received the butter I requested. My steamed shrimp were over cooked and absolutely swimming in what can only be described as Old Bay soup. When my daughter in law’s went to the bar to request more ice water, a manager just stood in the corner playing on his phone and totally ignored the request. She also ordered cheesecake to go. The server brought it on a plate and handed her a box. The acoustics and ambiance are now that of a sports bar, not a restaurant. The only reason I opted to give any stars at all is because the cocktails were on point.

I always optimistic of a restaurant barbecue when I could smell the barbecue when I entered the restaurant. This restaurant is not exclusively a barbecue restaurant so maybe I should’ve had that optimism. The brisket was so overcooked so tasteless. It made me sad we were there with a large group, so maybe that affected our service, but it was kind of confusing, I do appreciate the waitress did make individual bills for each group, so that was really nice. The salad didn’t come out at the same time. I never got my soup so I asked for a different side and they did accommodate me. The crab dip was pretty tasty and the couple that had the nachos really enjoyed them. The people who ordered the pretzels were very very confused because it said of a very pretzel and they were pretzel sticks, and they said they were kinda doughy. I think the winner for appetizers was the queso. It looks really good very cheesy and they really really enjoyed it. My friend enjoyed his beef tips a lot, and the Ruben as well. My ribs on the barbecue was good but like I said the brisket was not when I have to ask for barbecue sauce to cover a brisket you know we’re in trouble. They are able to accommodate large groups, but have a very small parking lot.

It was our first time here and it was also karaoke night!!! We ate our fabulous dinner while watching the locals sing! Everyone was friendly and the food was EXCELLENT! We ordered sweet tea, crispy brussels sprouts (with bacon and nuts), firecracker shrimp (similar to bang bang) and ribs with tater tots and green beans. Every single thing we ate was AMAZING!!!! I highly recommend this place!

We always see lots of cars in the parking lot at ClearWater Fire-Grill & Catering and let me tell you the food here was awesome. The service was fantastic. We had dinner, drinks, an appetizer and dessert and it all was fantastic!! I love banana pudding and the banana pudding here is to die for. I got a piece of banana and cookie in every bite. The automosphere is very nice. Even though there were lots of cars outside you were not cramped inside. You had room to sit and eat. The folks at the front door greet you with a smile and are so polite. Our waitress Natalie was awesome and she laughed with us when we made jokes. She was super attentive and remembered everything we had asked for and kept coming to make sure everything was okay. We will most definitely be making a trip back here because there are so many things to try on the menu.
